Lou Reed wrote this when he was only 22, still just a kid. This is music's about life, dark fucked up parts of life but life it has no age. But I agree still ahead of its time.

"Not easy to listen too." That is the point, everything is so we'll thought out, the ringing on the ears are a part of if. This is not a song about a happy ending, this is a song about a horrible part of our world. It should not be easy, it should make one feel. And by god they nailed it.

IMO that mad Welshman's finest moment. John Cale, of course. His utterly discordant contribution was almost up there in perfection with Paul McCartney's idea of how the classically trained/at that point bemused orchestra should play in the utterly magnificent A Day in the Life.

My favourite has always been "Venus in Furs", but maybe that says more about me - strange, "The Bewlay Brothers" jumped into my head while listening to this.

So the Voice Lou Reed which you probably knew….His great album Transformer was w Produced by David Bowie..have a listen to Satellite of Love, less arty and more easy listening. Please search out David Bowies cover of Lou’s Waiting for the (my) Man…sublime and oh so listenable..Love that you two are listening to the early underground stuff but hope you do not get too led to art for art sake…a lot of it was not successful, critically or commercially.

The squealing and screeching represents the acceleration of thought and emotional chaos from the first crank until until, "...the heroin in my blood leads to a center in my head, then I'm better off than dead... thank your god that I'm not aware and thank your god that I just don't care...", how intense is that? In 1967 when "Heroin" was released people where just figuring out that they were lied to about the goings on in Vietnam, "...all the politicians making dizzy sounds." "...bodies piled up in mounds...", reference to all the body bags coming home from Vietnam. This song is so much more, no matter how hard you try, you will never be able to fully understand and get it.

I notice you have done videos of the 2 best Velvet Underground songs, this one and Venus In Furs. It's stuff like this that influenced a hell of a lot of Art Rock bands and earned them a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Punk and everything that came after owe them a lot. They proved that you don't have to be a highly trained "musician" to create groundbreaking art. There was nothing this minimal being put out before this.

Great story telling through music and Lou Reed was certainly different so get where you're coming from. So glad to find a reaction channel that plays a variety of music and where there are honest reactions. If you're still looking for suggestions, how about reacting to another band who does great story telling through their lyrics and music. The band are called Pulp and a track from the 90s called Common People; but be sure to play the album version.

I've read that heroin completely numbs you so that you don't feel anything. I can see Lou desiring that, getting fed up with all noises of the big city, the lies, the violence of daily life. His parents put him through shock therapy because they thought he might be gay. It does things to the brain.

It starts out with slow, quiet and obviously it gets more dissonant with the heroine, but by the end of the song, the noise fills in between as well. Another one on this theme is "Waiting for the Man" - maybe more listenable, but just as hard. Taking the album as a whole, there are many different moods, and this is at the extreme.

I think you over-estimate the number of people who have never heard this song. They are rare. So I am fascinated to see their reaction. It's great to see that John Cale and his viola can still un-nerve people, even here in the year 2022. And who are they ? THEY are from the future . They are who the Velvets were aiming at.
