The velvet effect in epoxy resin. Tutorial

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is how I create the velvet effect in resin. Here I'm using an oval tray mold but it can be done in so many mold shapes so have a play around.

Do you wait until the resin starts to harden before you put the plastic over so it doesn't stick as much maybe?

  • @shelley-withinresinaustralia

No, no need to wait at all. If the plastic is smooth and clean it won’t stick.

Hi can we follow the same procedure on mdf board

  • @shelley-withinresinaustralia

Only if the MDF board has a lip of some sort because you need the depth in the resin to create the effect.

i love this effect, i did have a quick question, do you wait for the resin to cure before adding the plastic or coat the plastic in something before you put it in?

Thanks. No i don't wait, laying the plastic in the uncured resin makes the effect so the resin can't be cured

My plastic just lays flat on it no matter how much I try to scrunch it up

This is sooo lovely but I have two questions. Question 1 - do you coat underneath and then do second coating then put the plastic or do you just put the plastic with the first pour of resin? Also second question what type of plastic do you use?

All steps are explained and shown in the video. The plastic I used was just some off cuts of a thin sheet of plastic I got in some packing material, nothing special.

Partly fill your mold with casting resin, then place a thin plastic film over it. When it cures, pull it off, add pigment to make it shiney (chameleon or mica), then top with another layer of black tinted resin. It's all in the video.

It was just some random thin plastic I kept from some packaging from memory.

Do you mean what plastic sheet did I use? It was just some clean, smooth packing plastic I’d kept. Nothing special, just a random piece I’d kept.

Question: I did this and the plastic got terribly stuck. I used plastic like yours (that came as packaging around one of the molds I ordered). What did I do wrong? Thanks!

Oh no sorry to hear that. It may have gotten stuck for a few reasons, did it get imbedded under the resin? Did it get exposed to too much heat, eg was your resin too hot or did it come in contact with any external heat like from a heat gun? Was the plastic clean and completely free from any kind of scratches? Without seeing it in person it’s really difficult for me to tell what went wrong exactly but I hope those questions help you troubleshoot.

How do you avoid air bubbles? I’ve been having that issue.

  • @shelley-withinresinaustralia

It can be tricky. If you begin to lay down your plastic slowly from one end and work your way to the other, gently placing it down gradually it will eliminate trapped air.
