On snowy days when my daughter Brodie was little I used to make potato soup and cinnamon rolls from scratch. Brodie and her Daddy would be outside shoveling the walks and clearing off the cars while I was busy in the kitchen. Nice memories.

I live in a 120 yr old cottage here in New Zealand, and while I have a modern stove - I use the original wood stove all winter. There's always a pot of soup bubbling, plus it heats the hot water and saves on the power bill. The old wood stoves are much sought after here.

Rustic vegetable soup. Yes, on a really cold day, the soup tastes especially good. Now I make it for my mother who is 101yrs old. A family favorite for generations.
My grandmother used to make something similar, but she kept the diced veg chunky and added pearl barley to thicken it. I make it myself nowadays; it keeps a few days in the pan on the stove, and actually gets better during that time; just keep ladling out a bowlful and reheat it in the microwave. My dog also loved the dregs from the pot poured over his kibbles.
I’d just leave it chunky. Reminds me of my Grampa’s veggie soup. Delish!
I was thrilled to see the addition of the frozen peas at the end. Although the aromatic veggies are cooked, to well done, enhancing the flavor, fresh texture is so pleasing.

My dear great-aunt, Eleanor Fannie Conroy, lived with 7 lively nieces and nephews whom she loved as much as the children she was destined never to have. I am an old woman now and when I was a child she often made soup; my favorite was pea with ham. She told stories about her life as a young woman that intrigue me to this day-
Perfect for my lunch today. And some for the freezer.
I really like the contrast of blitzed vegetables and non-blitzed, looks truly delicious.

Ah Donal, man after me own heart! Been looking for a recipe for farmhouse veggie soup since I left home 28yrs ago. Couldn't buy knorr or Erin soup mix since I left. Now I can replicate it and not feel half as homesick when it gets cold to freezing! Nollaig Shona Duit!
Been holding onto this recipe for 3 years, then FINALLY made it for the family a month ago...and I have been making this weekly since!! While I had to make a few adjustments((non-dairy, so just added more plant butter, no parsnips at local stores, so replaced with Korean turnip)) and it is just sooo soooo good!! I need to make your bread recipe, but I have paired the soup with a no knead, artisan bread, and roasted chicken ...and 💋👌 Just...thank you ❤. This soup is literally the embodiment of a warm hug!!

For any of my vegan cooking I just use coconut oil for the saute, plus a bit of extra virgin olive oil or avocado oil at the end for a "buttery" flavor. And coconut milk or a few tablespoons of cashew butter as milk/cream substitutions. I'm with you on the texture. A few solid pieces are a nice contrast.

I am not Irish, but I have been making this soup all my life. I do not like to blend it, what I do is cook a couple of potatoes just cut in half and a piece of butternut squash, at the end of the cooking I blend those with some stock and add it to the soup. Then add cream, I love it with chopped cilantro on top. Looove soup, I have it winter and summer.

I'm astonished by how rapidly the frozen pea ball-bearings softened and cooked through in that non-simmering soup. I don't feel confident about replicating that part of the recipe myself because every time I cook with peas they take just that little bit longer than I imagined they would. So I think I'd add peas that had been pre-boiled for a little bit. If that sounds like it would work out, then this dish looks so delicious that I could see myself having two bowls over the course of a winter afternoon-- yum!
