Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav II Adolf in Swedish) may be remembered today as "The father of Modern Warfare", but he was no shipbuilder - that is for sure.

Hi Vicolin, you are absolutely correct haha. I don't know how much he influenced the design of these warships, but it sounds like he was for sure putting pressure on the ship designers and making some unreasonable (or at least untested) demands. I know there were at least 2 major designers on the Vasa warship, and they were attempting to make a bigger ship than they had successfully been able to build and maneuver before to impress the king. I enjoyed learning so much about the Swedish history while in Stockholm. What an incredible city! Thank you so much for your comments, I've enjoyed reading them very much :)

Marine Archeologists recently found one of the Vasa's sister ships - "Äpplet" (The Apple). This ship had improved construction and was actually sea-worthy, but apparently was not that great of a ship, and the design was quickly abandoned in favor of better ships. "Äpplet" ended its days by getting deliberately sunk in one of the waterways leading up to Stockholm, to be used as a barrier ship underwater. She continues to sit at the bottom of this river to this day, but is in quite poor condition and partially collapsed. Apparently, the records say that "Äpplet" was quite neglected before she was sunk.

Hi there, good morning Vicolin! This is a really interesting story, thank you so much for sharing with me about the ship, the Äpplet! I hadn't heard anything about Applet before, so I am looking it up online right now. She's a fairly recent discovery, right? Is there any talk about attempting to raise her to the surface also like they did with Vasa? Äpplet was sunk to protect one of the main inlets to Stockholm, correct? Did that prevent other ships from being able to enter and leave the harbor? How cool, I appreciate you sharing this with me. Like the saying goes, you learn something new everyday! :)

@@michaelandjulie It would seem KZread deleted my comment before it was posted....oh well. Äpplet was found 2022 outside of the port city of Vaxholm. This city was once a very important marine port, with a fortress built on an island just off the shore. The ship is too badly damaged to be worth salvaging, so I don't think there are any plans to do so. Some artifact may be recovered, but as she was sunk deliberately there is likely less items of interest on board. Likely she was sunk to deny access to certain water passages for potential enemies. "We know where there is a barrier, the enemy does not". You can read more about Äpplet (and other wrecks) at the site "vrak"."se" (remove the "" to get the actual adress - youtube does not like links). The site can be read in English, just choose it at the top.

Hi Vicolin! I'm so sorry about the comment disappearing on you. Unfortunately that has been happening to a couple of other people who have posted here, and even happened to me twice now. I'm sure it's a glitch with KZread, because I don't have any filters or restrictions set on the comments section, so nothing should be flagging the comments for deletion. It's very annoying, and I sure hope YT gets it sorted soon. In the meantime, I'm copying all my comments before I submit just in case they disappear, so I don't have to type them all over again. Hope this helps you! Thank you for the link! I will certainly check it out. I did read the wiki page. How interesting that they sunk the ship just to block their enemies from being able to enter the harbor. I wouldn't have known about the Äpplet if you hadn't told me, so thank you! I really like learning new neat random facts from around the world! :). Hope you have a fantastic weekend! :)

Hi there, GMM! I didn't notice a particular smell inside the museum, it seemed to be pretty well ventilated when we visited. But I'm sure it definitely did have a smell over the course of all the years they were constantly painting it with chemicals to help preserve it. That's a pretty amazing undertaking, to paint the entire ship so often. I think maybe now the smell is better, or else I didn't notice it. We had a fantastic trip there, what an incredible museum! The best part was the 20 minute video introduction, where they recreated 17th century Swedish life and told the entire story.
