The Vaporwave Subgenres Video

Long video talking about most of the Vaporwave Subgenres. In it I'm going trough everything from Future Funk, Utopian Virtual and Faux-utopian to VHS POP and Late night lofi. Mainly focusing on the aesthetics of the genres but also taking some deep looks into what seperates the music of the genres.

PINKAS does a great job of explaining the feelings of the listener and the intention of the artist, as far as I'm aware.

Guys music theory isn’t the study of music genres, it’s how music is made and composed. Although you could talk about the Music Theory of vapor wave, what that means is basically you’re talking about the chord progression or what key a song could be in, Music Theory has nothing to do with Music History. Two separate things.

I call the main, parent, genre "retrowave" because sythwave kinda has its own sound like darksynth. And while you may be right about the scale compared to each other, vaporwave does have a bunch of weird stuff like pretty much slamming a keyboard and calling it done. (which is as vaporwave as it gets, but that just means its a joke in the literal sense. It's beginnings were rebellious in the form of abstract, which doesn't really say much. But it did gain more, stable and enjoyable genres like future funk or whatever sonyboogie belongs too. I guess Lo-Fi too, but I don't care for that one, the other 2 mentioned are the only ones I respect but that's just me)

Personally, I don't consider lofi hip hop as a subgenre of vaporwave. Although it takes a lot of its aesthetics from vaporwave, it's more heavily based on jazz and hip hop, as heard by the acoustic instruments, hip-hop samples, and jazz-like chords they're composed of. The ideology of lofi hip hop also fits better with the chill, existential, and nihilistic thought processes of other city/alt lofi movements. I find it really interesting how people have classified each of these subgenres.

It seems like lately there's been a few more subgenres, like Barber Beats. Apparently, they're a distilled form of Vaporwave that takes a "less is more" approach. Some gatekeeping folks say it's not "real Vaporwave" because it takes samples of other Vaporwave songs and remixes them... even tho that's what Vaporwave does with other songs and audio sources. In a way, Barber Beats are some sort of "meta vaporwave" which is honestly pretty brilliant, more self-contained in the whole genre itself, more self-sustained, and it shows that Vaporwave itself is nostalgic enough to be used as source for more Vaporwave. It's beautiful, in a way!

Breaking down the genres like this (on the infographic) really shows Vektroid's range as a music producer when they have a release (under pseudonyms) in most of the genre listings. I counted 6 / 8 featured albums on the parts of the infographic appearing in the vid. New Dreams Ltd., Prismcorp, Macintosh Plus, Laserdisc Visions, Fuji Grid TV, Sacred Tapestry--all released by one remarkably creative and musically exploratory individual.

One thing that I find so outa this world involving Vaporwave is the use of psychedelic mushrooms. My friend introduced me to both just this last year in 2022. I have been going thru depression and experienced great loss from 2021 and 2022 so my first time going on a trip he introduced Vaporwave to me. I just cant get enough of OPN and Blank Banshee and everything else. I also get sucked into the comments reading continuously into the historical comments made many years ago lol

Even besides the music, to me vaporwave is a certain vibe... it's like those moments from my childhood, like we were on a trip to my grandparents, driving late at night with the radio on, some 80s music quiet on the background as my parents are talking, me on the backseat half asleep, staring at the passing streetlights through the window after having ate a bag of candy.

Interesting take on the faux-utopian subgenre. Blade Runner 2049's soundtrack is definitely a good contender for it to be labeled as such. The track "Joi" first evokes these feelings of perceived elation before the dark bassline kicks in to transport you into a woeful melancholy. Great video!

Cool video good enough for people not too involved into the scene, my only complaint is that you sometimes reference genres you haven't really mentioned yet as comparison for stuff you're explaining glad you mentioned hypnogogic pop as almost practically an aspect of vaporwave because its included in so many releases and it's not classic vapor you know that kind of deal I think you should've mentioned a bit more artists per genre since for some you don't really mention any, just if you really wanted to guide someone that wants to dive into the vaporwave scene, guuysss it's not all about the aesthetics the music is cool too!!! Aaa
