We stopped at Ramstein for a couple days on our way back from Afghanistan. It’s the most beautiful base I’ve ever been to, a massive bx that’s pretty much a shopping mall with stores and food places everywhere and we could go off base and explore Germany. Compared to where we just came from, it was like heaven. I also did wonder why we had such a large base there still, since Europe is normalized since ww2, thanks for answering that.

Hey!! I was in Djibouti on that base. It's not super-secret what we're doing. Probably people will think I'm lying but the whole 15 months I was there I was force protection for civil affairs teams that were digging wells, building schools, hospitals, and other infrastructure projects. The Saudis and Chinese are running around there too. The big difference is: they are handing out short term fixes that the people want. Food and money. That's just not sustainable. The USA is doing it different. Sure we handed out some food and cash, but the majority focus was on self sufficiency. For example: we would install solar panels to pump water from the well. We would then TRAIN locals how to maintain them and doing other project maintenance. I hope it works out in the end. I am proud of what we did. My profile picture is also from Djibouti in a small town called Tadjoura. Thanks for reading. God bless the world.

Shahnid Ismail It’s slightly more complicated. The quoted Ramstein Air Base is installed on German territory owned by Germany. However, this “landlord” does not collect any rent from the USAF, pays for any environmental damages due to military activities, provides some extra upkeep and pays part of new or upgraded buildings. For example, the entire planning (about 15% of the total budget) of the new army hospital (replacing an older one) right across Ramstein Air Base has been paid by Germany.

Good video but it missed a couple of points: first, a major purpose of military bases in certain countries (namely Germany and South Korea) are as "tripwires" that would automatically pull the US into a war should that ally be invaded. It's a way of reassuring the ally that the US leadership won't get cold feet should the worst happen. Second, a major factor in why overseas bases are so unpopular in some contries (namely Japan and SK) is that the US personnel based there are not subject to local law enforcement, which stokes local anger when those servicemen sometimes commit serious crimes and are effectively above the law.

Jurisdiction is worked out through a Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the local host nation and the US Department of Defense. Courses of action in the event of an accusation of a midemeanor or felony committed by a member of the US military are guided by the relevant SOFA. For example, my understanding was that a military member detained by the German polizei for Driving Under the Influence was entirely subject to German law enforcement and penalties. Members of the US military do not enjoy "diplomatic immunity."

One thing you omit is that US military bases are a large part of income for the locals... American military personnel get a regular paycheck every two weeks, and a lot of that money is spent on the local economy. When I was stationed in La Maddalena Italy, most of my friends and I spent a big bulk of our paychecks in the local restaurants and stores there, not to mentioned that I rented an Italian small house for the two years I was there. So bases have a positive impact economically on the local locations they are placed in...

As a non-native living in Okinawa, I've been able to experience firsthand the effects of the U.S. bases' presence on the people living here. I live in a city where a marine base sits right smack in the middle of it. Looking at an aerial photograph of the city hung inside the town hall and seeing this one ostensible piece of foreign-designated land in the middle of it is somewhat unnatural, to say the least. I'm friends with native Okinawans and Americans from both inside and outside these bases, and the situation truly is a complicated one with no real solution. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa - Originallt built in rural farmland. Locals set up bars and small-tent restaurants outside the gates, then other small business catering to the servicemen, and then small homes for the local workers so they could live near their businesses and keep their families.... And that outside community grew and grew until the Air Base became surrounded by a city. And somehow the Marines are at FAULT? Also, the locals complained of the noise (well, they DID decide to live next to an active airfield) and locals complained of drunken/misbehaving Marines (well, they DID open all those bars and girly-joints) and then locals complained that the base occupied valuable farmland (translate: valuable real estate for building construction) so the Marines and US Gov. offered to build an artificial land base along the coast and relocate there - but , no, that wasn't good enough. F*** em. Those locals will be glad enough the Marines are there on-island should the SHTF with China or N.Korea. Semper Fi, my brothers.

This situation is hardly an exception to the rule, just a little light reading will reveal that it's a fairly common occurrence across the board. Whether or not people benefit in an abstract or indirect manner is irrelevant to the point I'm making. My point was and is that the locals, the people who actually have to live in the area of a foreign base aren't always happy to and for a number of reasons. Regardless of whether you're in support of or opposed to these bases it's a reality that should be kept in mind.

you are correct about many other hidden bases. In fact I used to work for google a few years ago. One day an engineer came by to inspect the new server building that they had built on the site that I was at. I got a chance to talk to him about how each facility is customized to its environment. Each one is environmentally friendly as possible and they try to use the area to help cool the systems. Case in point, the facilities that are located along the ocean usually use ocean water to help cool the servers while the facility I worked at processed sewage waste and used that to help cool the servers then cleaned the water and put it back in the local river, which was cleaner than the actual river water lol. So this engineer and I got to talking about all the unique bases and he said the coolest one by far is a joint military/NSA google facility in the middle of that african desert. He said it was 3000 miles away from anything and all supplies had to be helicoptered in. Highly trained staff work there in case of problems because no one is going to be able to come and help you if there is one. Remember it's a google facility so its a internet hub as well. In the middle of that freaking desert. Insane.
