The US Forestry Service Drained This 85-Year-Old Lake
Ойын-сауық
Hey you guys, Chet the Dream Poet here. Come anchor down for another vlog today as we explore Lake McKamey, a man-made lake that was created between the late 1930s and early 1940s by the Conservation Corps of America as a recreational lake. It's time to see what secrets the lake holds! Remember, make sure to Like, Subscribe & Share!
(WIND ADVISORY: Throughout this video you will hear a lot of wind. The lake sits on top of a mountain and the weather can sometimes be unpredictable.)

Dad and I participated in a fish count for a Detroit area lake that was drained years back for repairs being done to the dam. The variety and size of the fish amazed most of the volunteers. Master Angler bass, carp, crappie, bluegill, and even rainbow and brown trout. We suspect the trout were from years of a kids day stocking program miles upstream.

Man if they lived in there longer than a year they should’ve looked into doing it more often could’ve released some wild trout in there and years down the road have a natural trout population they don’t live in many areas longer then a season or 2 the heat kills them off by mid summer most of the time

@@andrediaz6205 It was a polluted warm lake that wasn’t more than 15’ deep, that’s why finding the trout was so surprising.

The metal cylinder thing you found looks like the remains of a spent military-grade parachute flare. The fins in the back pop out once it is shot out of the tube, to allow it to fly upward better.

That makes sense because it had burn marks on it too.
If you’re curious to how big that drain is!! That’s how big it is !! 😂😂😂 oooook!! Lovely form of measurement
Can’t beat exploring places that don’t come available very often. Cool video and cooler newt 😎
You did a damn good job making this video.
I live in Cleveland about 30 mins away. I’ve hiked past there to Benton Falls. Creepy lake but pretty terrain.
That was fun... thanks 😎👍

No problem Kathy! Glad you enjoyed it!
Can you please do history on the lake. Why it was built and founded or if was already there? Let us know
That was so cool!! Glad you went so we could see it

Thanks Patrick! Thank you for telling me about it.
Nice! My wife and I rode our bikes in February from hwy30 to the campground and stumbled upon McKamey drained. Looks like the last time this was done was 1993. It was completely fogged in at the top that day and it gave us some serious Silent Hill vibes 😂 thanks for the summary!
lol My kids and I put some of that "treasure" in that pile.

Awesome lol.
The round metal thing you found with holes in it and a solid bottom you found was for a sump pump(water pump)It Sat on the bottom and a hose hooked up going to the pump where it is clogged with mud

Definitely on the bottom for aeration and/or sump!
That was great, young sir
That aluminum thing you found is a military hand launched rocket flare.
"It goes all the way to the top." LOL! Every thing goes all the way to " "Its" top...
Cool video! Sorry your shoes got messed up. Seems like stepping back in time. Treasures everywhere.
It would be awesome to take a metal detector down there. Aquachigger would love this area.
I'm from the Mcminn County side, not far from the Polk co line......I can say this for certain, We do live in one of the most beautiful and interesting areas in the US. , Been to Chilhowee Campground/Lake McKamy many times....recently they ( National Forest Service) drained Indian Boundary up near Tellico, and there were some interesting fish traps and stuff in the lake bed... well done explorer! now go home and shower and get the mud off, lol
The round thing is a screed for stopping to brief from going into a hose for a pump.
Awwww, we went there a lot when I was very young.
With a little foresite you could have carried a few trashbags with you. Simply place the cans, etc.. into the bag and if nothing else leave it near the shoreline to make the clean up easier.
Good job
Great! your near all of these counties and other places. What the heck state or even country is it? I guess we are just supposed to know this stuff because you do.
the grate joke was great got yourself a new sub cause of that one
Interesting to see. If you go back or any friends do, bring a trash bag to remove all that trash so it won’t remain once lake refilled. 😉

great video
Orange rocks and mud meand it a sulfur creek coming from an a coal mine.
I wonder what goodies a person could have found around that beach with a metal detector😊
Wow what a shallow lake.
Why arent they pulling the silt out. That would make same farmers very happy.
The water drains down the mountain to the parksville lake
Walk in a drained lake . Wow mudd 😊!
Your footsteps will be in that mud petrified for many years untill that lake drys up once again and future people will look at those footprints thinking you were probably hunting some prey or something lol
The sediment is nuts. They should try to get rid of some of it.
Cheddar biscuit you did it

It was fun as hell man! I trudged waist deep through mud though.
cool
They need to dig it out. It's a fresh water bank. We need more fresh water
Do snow shoes work for mud?
Did you see any dead fish or did they take em out? I'm in Cleveland TN too btw.

Not many lol. I guess they went into the nearby stream. A lot of the salamanders are hiding in the mud though.
“various nick-nacks”… 😄😁😆😂🤣
Why is the creek polluted with iron ?? How does and fish live in that water.
Looks like a bull skull at the mouth of the drain. Interesting lol
That's a newt not a salamander😂😂😂
I still wonder what happened to the fish
Now would be the time to do some hunting for gold.
Does anyone know what state this is in
Needs someone brave to metal detect it. I reckon its full of coins and interesting trinkets
That is a water pump screen.

When you started walking on in that lake bed, I worried you might be in danger due to finding some quick sand. Kind Of silly considering you obviously got home and uploaded the video, eh?
🤫maybe for like 5min of this video
Thats not a lake thats a pond
That was an axle

USFS is not know for good decisions and this is a perfect example. Some clown in an office in SF or DC told about this great idea by some other office slug and they proceed without any local input or research.
You don't like the mud you're at the bottom of the lake duh it's muddy if you don't like you didn't have to go down there
Drain the lake hes lost his shoe
look like quidk sand to me
