This opens up opportunities for an individual to move anywhere in the country or work for any company and not be restricted, held back or hindered because of language. The US has a common language (English) that is used by all citizens in the country. People are often derided for not speaking English. So why make it look like it’s a bad thing for another country to have a common language. It’s like looking for any excuse to criticize. I think it’s time to stop looking at everything others do in non western countries in a negative slant. Let others organize and run their countries as they see fit.

I've been trying to argue this exact point in Western Leftists spaces and they just refuse to listen. It's infuriating. All they wanna do is criticize China and blame China for US deterioration and criticize their governmental. Such a waste of time to demonize other nations when we could be co-operating.

It's funny there's a saying in China quote "first class foreigner second officer, third class minority people forth Han" (Han people is the major people of China).

I have been teaching in greater China (Taiwan, HK and Mainland) for the past 25 years after 3 nightmare years of teaching in USA. To say the American educational system is mediocre is way too generous - public education in the States is broken. China however is an amazing country to teach in. Teaching in USA and in China is like night and day.

@@athenakoios In China - absolutely yes and if at the end of 9th grade she did well on her zhongkao, she would get to go to high school. If after high school she did well on her gaokao, she would get to go to university. My point though is that during elementary and middle school, if she was bouncing off the walls the way some students in the States like to bounce off the walls, she would be shown the door. The Chinese take education VERY seriously.

In nowadays China “Autocracy” means all our freedoms can not be above our social responsibilities, except following the rule of law. Especially capital should be “locked in the cage” because its greediness, selfishness and brutality are very harmful to the majority’s interests and government decision making. And democracy has been effectively conducted only between those outstanding leaders, instead of those votes of ordinary citizens. Same time the ordinary citizen’s concerns have truly been reaching to the top. In contrast, “democratic” America has been manipulated by capital, it can recklessly declare frequent war and over one million innocent Americans dead in the pandemic. In front of these criminals and genocides under the “beacon of the hill” the whole American society has been always keeping silence.

I am a firm believer the more US and China know and understand each other, the better it is for the citizen of both countries and for the world. US, despite it is on its course to have a smaller footprint than before on world stage, is still the most powerful country. China on the other hand is still a lot smaller in total or per capital GDP measures, but rising so rapidly in the last 30 years and narrowing the gap with the US. This big picture is not going to change whether US likes it or not. So I think the world will be more peaceful if US and China get along. Btw, very, very impressed agreed with Mr Freeman’s analysis on China and US-China relationships.

When you meddle in another countries political system and culture as America does, it is inevitable they close down and become more authoritarian to resist it.

Feminocentrism in the US has glorified weakness laziness, indecisiveness and just escapism in the majority of American society. When your society allows feminism to dominate your society you lower standards to accommodate weak men and women(for fear of offending them). Look at America, women are everywhere, the men who are supposed to lead the country to posterity have been downtrodden and remain in the shadows. Women only thrive as long as you enjoy prosperity, when time come to really buckle up and build a nation the women will run away and leave men to fix the country them they will come back to demand equality. USA 31 trillion in debt is : 7.04 trillion to foreign governments and the rest to the USA (Medicare social security etc) Deficit has been cut by 350 billion and on the path to cut another 1.5 trillion by end of year. USA is fine. Check china again and do comparisons. China debt is now astronomical

My favorite country in the world really needs to get its act together. People always make the justification: we have the best universities. People from all over come here to study. I needed to hear Chas Freeman's sober diagnosis following a few Pollyannaish videos from Peter Zeihan.

Who is winning between China and US is an interesting topic for discussion and a lot for understand. However, it can also generate good and bas effects when competition becomes the main focus and made to out wit and destroy one country or the other. I believe what US or China should compete against oneself on how to make its citizens live more peacefully and joyfully.

Dr Steinfeld was right about the closure tendencies during covid19 part of Chinese policy. It is fortunate the tendency has been reversed as the cross border quarantine time is now down to 7+3.

I find it quite curious how characteristics or values that are described here as reactionary are seen as pathologies of the US. Speech like that gives one the impression that the ideology of the west calls for it to be even more communist or revolutionary than its communist adversaries. Xenophobia is presented as the great internal problem and co-operation with the PRC as a cure. This seems to me to be symptomatic of the west undervaluing itself in decline while getting lost in weird admiration of its ascending rival. The ideologically imposed lack of in-group preference of western nations is something their enemies can exploit. Progressive or revolutionary ideology is a strategic liability for ones own society first and foremost.

Because in China the competition to get into the top 265 odd universities is fierce and only about 3% make it while all you need to go to most universities overseas in $money and China has plenty of that!! And Chinese $money is always most welcome. Although Australia appears not to be as welcoming as previously and are probably wondering why the 100,000s of Chinese students are not banging on their doors to get back in - after over the last few years listening to the China bashing by Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton trying to gain political points smearing China - has this deterred many Chinese parents from sending their precious children to a country that may now be unsafe for them?

The term limits removal is actually not about the leader. China's State Council believes it is better this way overall. The Chinese State Council is the executive branch of the Chinese government. It does not legislate. The one actually legislate though, the National People's Congress, is usually considered a rubber stamp to legitimize the Party's will. Then there is the CCP, which operates outside of (mostly parallels, sometimes above) the government and hold the real power. I do agree Xi's 3rd term is made possible by the consensus of the party's elites, not just Xi's personal will, but the decision making process is highly opaque here. While I do believe it will serve China's interest in the short-to-middle term, there is no doubt it damages China's political ecology in the long run. One day Xi will be gone - he's human, after all - and it will be difficult for his successor to take a foothold among all the contenders. The ensuing tension may risk chaos and social upheaval, weakening the state. It's like Chinese dynastical politics all over again.

No term limits in a developing country actually makes a lot of sense, if you have the right leader. It allows for very broad and very long term planning, whereas the political wind may change every 4 to 5 years in other "more democratic" countries, thereby hindering or undermining long term important projects that have already cost a lot of time, effort and money. Do we consider it "democratic"? No, not by our definition. But who's to say that our type of democracy, or even democracy in general is the best way to govern for any given country in any particular stage of development? I even think there is a good case to be made that democracy is detrimental to the development of a surging nation state.

both speakers made some good points. both countries have a lot of problems, some of which quite serious. the extrem nationalism shown in both countries are alarming. it seems the confrontation has brought the ugly side of both sides to surface. i can feel the public discontent towards the backward steps taken in recent past, and we will see if that can be reversed down the road. on the other hand, the structural problems of usa appear to be even harder to overcome. americans are so divided that the left and right are so determined to fight the opposite that nobody is allowed to take the middle ground. it suffices to say the 21st century doesn't look very bright on either side the pacific. we are heading into a storm.

I think except for a couple of slips due to, I guess, lack of access to realities, the two speakers make largely fair points. I am from neither of the place you mention but I agree with you on the part that mainlanders were discriminated against. I witness this in the US. This was even depicted in a HK movie called Comrades: Almost a Love Story.

Great debate by westerners who have a pulse on China. I share some of the same concerns Edward has especially regarding open borders due to Covid-19, but am not conflating it with China’s desire for globalisation. I also understand agree with concerns about the ossification of systems under Xi’s continued reign, but can see why Xi has chosen to do so considering the Russian alliance (Xi - Putin friendship) and adversarial conflict instigated by the US. China made the grave mistake of offending the American business community with its overly-tight local markets in the early 2010s. They acknowledged their mistakes and sought to rectify it with Trump but it was too late. The American political class and state department now had the license to go all-out to be adversarial against a peer competitor. Growing up in the previous century, I recall western mainstream wisdom that Asians will never overtake the West because we are somehow incapable of being innovative. Reading through the comments, I guess that sentiment has manifested in different ways.

Still he's wise enough to recognize the contours of the macroeconomic situation even where they're generally dismissed by liberal hand-waiving. The US has major systemic issues, and as an American I'd be overjoyed to see a regime here face up to the issues and begin to solve them, even if it isn't from a revolutionary political perspective. We just need more of these geriatric politicians to pass away and the old malaise will no longer be sustainable.

I love comments like these, that ignore the continuity of history so that they can say "my number is bigger". The implication that the US just made up its own Western Culture entirely at birth is SO funny.
