On the very last day of the Trump presidency, the US State Department declared that the Chinese government is committing genocide against the Uyghurs, an ethnic minority native to the region of Xinjiang in northwestern China. President Biden isn’t known for agreeing with the policies of his predecessor, but on March 9th State Department spokesman Ned Price said that “We have seen nothing that would change our assessment.” While the US has claimed that the Chinese government is systematically destroying the Uyghur people using concentration camps, China says that the camps are simply vocational schools.
During his confirmation hearing, now Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that China was the number one threat to the United States among nation states. China, now second to only the United States in military spending and economic output, is seen as a rising power and potential challenger to American world hegemony. Concern over China is now being used as a driver for increased military spending, with officials from both the Democratic and Republican party calling for full-spectrum dominance over the Indo-Pacific.
Are US government accusations of genocide and crimes against humanity based on sincere concerns over the well being of the Uyghurs, or are they cynical charges based on a desire to ratchet up tensions between the US and China? We’ll be joined by Max Blumenthal and Zhun Xu.
Max Blumenthal, the editor-in-chief of The Grayzone, is an award-winning journalist and the author of several books, including best-selling Republican Gomorrah, Goliath, The Fifty One Day War, and The Management of Savagery. He has produced print articles for an array of publications, many video reports, and several documentaries, including Killing Gaza. Blumenthal founded The Grayzone in 2015 to shine a journalistic light on America’s state of perpetual war and its dangerous domestic repercussions.
Zhun Xu is Associate Professor of Economics at John Jay college, CUNY, on leave from Howard University. Previously he has taught at Renmin University in Beijing. Zhun Xu’s main research interests include Political Economy of Development, Chinese Economy, and Economic History. He is also on the editorial boards of Science and Society and the Journal of Labor and Society.

One thing should be clarified. The accusation of genocide is about CULTURAL GENOCIDE, not that China is exterminating the Uighur population. Since the Uighur population have doubled the last 40 years it is clearly not killing them of. One "proof" of cultural genocide is that children are "forced" to learn chinese in school. I live in Sweden, i was "forced" to learn English (and French/German). It is called having a school curriculum. Why have nobody sanctioned Sweden for violating my human rights and undermining my cultural identity by forcing me to learn english???

The most infamous episodes include the ousting of Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh in 1953 - whose government was replaced by an authoritarian monarchy favorable to Washington - the removal and assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba in 1961, and the violent toppling of socialist Chilean President Salvador Allende, whose government was swept aside in 1973 by a military coup led by the ruthless Gen. Augusto Pinochet. (American dad made a episode on this one with the dancing dictator?) For decades, these actions were considered imperatives of the Cold War, part of a global struggle against the Soviet Union and its supposed leftist proxies. Its key participants included scheming diplomats like John Foster Dulles and Henry Kissinger, who advocated aggressive, covert policies to stanch the supposedly expanding threat of communism. Sometimes that agenda also explicitly converged with the interests of U.S. business: In 1954, Washington unseated Guatemala's left-wing president, Jacobo Arbenz, who had had the temerity to challenge the vast control of the United Fruit Co., a U.S. corporation, with agrarian laws that would be fairer to Guatemalan farmers. The CIA went on to install and back a series of right-wing dictatorships that brutalized the impoverished nation for almost half a century. A young Che Guevara, who happened to be traveling through Guatemala in 1954, was deeply affected by Arbenz's overthrow. He later wrote to his mother that the events prompted him to leave “the path of reason” and would ground his conviction in the need for radical revolution over gradual political reform. Aside from its instigation of coups and alliances with right-wing juntas, Washington sought to more subtly influence elections in all corners of the world. And so did Moscow. Political scientist Dov Levin calculates that the “two powers intervened in 117 elections around the world from 1946 to 2000 - an average of once in every nine competitive elections.” In the late 1940s, the newly established CIA cut its teeth in Western Europe, pushing back against some of the continent's most influential leftist parties and labor unions. In 1948, the United States propped up Italy's centrist Christian Democrats and helped ensure their electoral victory against a leftist coalition, anchored by one of the most powerful communist parties in Europe. CIA operatives gave millions of dollars to their Italian allies and helped orchestrate what was then an unprecedented, clandestine propaganda campaign: This included forging documents to besmirch communist leaders via fabricated sex scandals, starting a mass letter-writing campaign from Italian Americans to their compatriots, and spreading hysteria about a Russian takeover and the undermining of the Catholic Church. “We had bags of money that we delivered to selected politicians, to defray their political expenses, their campaign expenses, for posters, for pamphlets,” recounted F. Mark Wyatt, the CIA officer who handled the mission and later participated in more than 2½ decades of direct support to the Christian Democrats. www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/10/13/the-long-history-of-the-u-s-interfering-with-elections-elsewhere/ While researching 100 years of US meddling. They always try to destabilize any country with different ideology. All started way back after the end of world war 2, the cold war started. US sees other ideology as dangerous and feel the need to bring democracy to all countries, so in other words, every US presidents starting from harry s truman are all involved. Believing democracy as a perfect system that all countries MUST adopt. This made US act aggressively and invade nations with different ideology, creating wars and chaos around the globe. CIA involvement in coup 1965 is one great example on how the west took sides by supplying weapons, made propaganda and indirectly killed more than 3 million innocent lives. Their strategy is based on "divide and conquer". This document was declassified by CIA because many activists around the globe condemn the war crimes of US and their allies. Not only that, CIA overthrew the legit president of indonesia and replaced it with a corrupt person who supported the US. Few foreigners know the democratic government system of China. There are 58 minority groups in China, each has its unique ethnicity, language and culture. During the national congress in Beijing their representatives would dress in traditional clothing for the meetings which look very colourful on TV. For decades China have set policies to add benefits to the minority groups to let them keep pace with the country’s development such as economic and education. A few minority groups with tiny populations are being protected and preserved. Pandas and tigers are precious and endangered but people are above animals. As far as Xinjiang is concerned, dozens of foreign companies have been competing to do business in Xinjiang for more than 20 years. There are American, European and Japanese machines for agriculture, mining, oil and gas, railways, subway, power generation, airports, and constructions. There are international 5 star hotels. 150 million tourists visited Xinjiang in 2020, predominantly Chinese but there are no less than one million foreigners residing in China, 70,000 Americans included, and China was pretty much Covid free from May 2020.

America's founding fathers had a vision of a great nation where the citizens could live without restrictions on their religious practices, culture, ancestral languages, race, etc. Certainly, without doubt, the founding would also envisioned the people entrusted to govern USA must be a responsible group of politicians. Unfortunately, the politicians of today's USA are treating politics like a quest for popularity of a game show. Yes, a larger pool of American politicians could care less about making improvement to citizens livelihood within USA compared to caring more about popularity gains in playing a game of minding other country's business. America's founding fathers must have wept often when watching from above to realize there are so many bigots and hypocrites exist among American politicians. What a shame!

Alexander Hamilton, coauthor of the US constitution, said that the main resposibility of government is to protect the minority opulent (super rich -1%) from the majority (non super rich +99%). Every US president to date has stepped up to the challenge of this mandate and never failed the "minority opulent". The founding fathers were slave owning masters who continued the policy of genocide of the indigenous American peoples by heroes like Buffalo Bill and general Custer. Early European 'settlers' were even paid by said governments for killing native Americans (Indians}. £50 for an adult male sculp, £25 for a woman's and 12 for a child under 12. Buffalo being the main staple diet of the Native American Indians were hunted to near extinction by the US army and the railroad companies. Source (one of many) Global Times 28/08/20. Sadly our idears about the wonderful founding farther is somewhat distorted. Conquerers write their history and US history repeats itself over and over. The country was created and built and sustained out of war mongering using the same template of all preceeding empire's going back 5000 (recorded). On a brighter note they all become hollowed out and unsustainable due to the unlimited avaricousness of the "opulent" and die out (bankrupted). Check out guys such as Michael Hudson books like "Killing the Host", Noam Chomsky books like "Hegemony or Survival" etc etc.

I would think one issue the Govt may be trying to tackle by exposing Uyghurs to wider industries is the fact that Uyghurs are : 1) poised for a great opportunity with the BRI and push westwards. 2) With Han populations plateauing, minorities have increased job opportunities in future. As such learning common language and enhancing new skills not only levels the Playing field for Uyghurs who would otherwise have been marginalised by Han migrants BUT in bigger picture may also allow them to climb up in the labour market and benefit from new silk road and focus east. This even more so with new economic deal with Iran and China's pivot toward the Middle East. I don't entirely agree with the Prof that local industry is the way to go. I think the industries from the East may shift towards the West in coming decade and many Uyghurs have reason to profit from these opportunities. I think the issue with China is often the methods are in good faith but heavy handed* But its not a perfect place. No place is. OTOH, overall the motives are not insidious. *(Heavy handed of course being very far from being forced labour or genocide narrative Western media and politicians prefer to spout).

It is a concentration camp because you forced to learn chinese language to millions who are over aged to study. At the same time there torture and rape taking place, thats why this nothing but GENOCIDE. This also taking place in Tibet and Southern Mongolia.

The lady asked what can we do. How about first identify your targets? 10,000 anti-war protesters in front of the war mongering tycoons’ big mansions could be more effective than half a million on the streets of DC. Keep at it till their wives complain. Have confidence in the power of women.

Strategically destabilizing Xinjiang is best way to halt the growth of China as the new superpower, it’s never about the wellbeing’s of Uighurs. Uighurs only suffer more when the West’s censorship on Xinjiang becomes effective. Likewise, Xinjiang is strategically so important to China that it will continue to deepen its cultural and economic ties with Xinjiang at all costs. The irony is that this will destabilize the world peace rather China, thus increasing the odds of kinetic wars, which might lead to nuclear annihilation of a huge swath of humanity. There is no winner in the worse scenario. Thank you MPA for bringing this importance peace awareness. However, no media will pay attention to you, your finding is only drown in the sea of political narratives. Truth don’t matter no more in the media age .
