    What a treat, to relive, vicariously, all the many roads I've travelled on on my R80G/S, R100G/S, RD350, R1150RS, and an assorted bunch of dirt bikes, including a couple 250 Honda's like you have.... Retired from LADWP 14 years ago, after working for 6 years in the Owens Valley, south of Bishop, 25+ in LA, and through the many years, I often went to work on a Friday all loaded up to go, and after a shower at the end of the day, would haul ass out of LA (then later the Owens Valley), and have been on every single road you travelled on, and could name those roads before you did (or didn't name it), because of so many occasions I'd been on those roads, in fact every road between the Mexican Border and the Oregon border, been on all of them. One of my favorites, (have A LOT of those) was down your way, going up to Mt. Palomar, and through Julian, to grab pastries and bread at the world famous bakery there...either on the way up the mountain, or on the way down. Any excuse to find a twistie, right? You bet I am! ; ) Live in the Bend, Oregon area, now, and still riding my 2004 R1150RS, even after a bad get off 2 years ago caused by an Oregon road crew where they caused my bike to flip, and thank God, it landed on me, otherwise it would be long gone now. It took me 9 months to source all the parts, from all over the world, literally, and last June I finally got it all back together, and had some awesome rides last summer, after an unbearable 9 months with it in pieces in my garage.... It's a fever, and once you get it (I got mine dirt riding at 8 years old....), there's no giving it up: it's not just love, it's a passion! My 25 year old daughter just bought a Yamaha, and we're planning some trips for this summer., once the snow melts here. Can't wait. Thank you, brother, for taking us all along, down memory lane. Many beautiful memories for me, for sure, so THANK YOU! Safe riding, bro: rubber side down, shiny side up! Btw: love your bike! Reminds me of my R80G/S! God bless you and your lovely Lady! Glad Dave was no worse for wear, too! Love his shop! Very cool!! And lastly: Man, your Lady is a trooper! Epic ride! Cool. : )

    Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it. Yep, Palomar Mtn. is a favorite weekend jaunt for my friends and I. I'm glad you're okay after your crash. I know how hard it can be sourcing parts for older BMWs. I just got my first airhead and I'm loving it. Not a GS like yours, a regular R100/7 but I am in the process of sourcing things to convert it to R100S spec and some bits are tricky to find

    @@FOURfabrication Oh darn, I forgot to mention this: if you don't have a single front disc, that's a great retrofit item, as the R100/7's that are drum brakes front and rear get very squirrely with emergency braking anything north of 55mph, as you've probably already noticed. The old R's (a pirates favorite letter, by the way) are great at putting around, but not the bikes you want for speed, which the R100RS is good at , (owned one), and the one I still have, my 2004 R1150RS, I've ridden across the USA at 135+ for 8-10 hours at a time, with no issues...and another great thing about them, Johnny Law loves them, too. Once heading back from upstate Michigan to Oregon, where I just zig-zagged for 8 days coming back, all over the "shop" to Oregon, and the cops would chase me, and when they caught up, ALL of them came up beside me, and gave me the "thumbs up", and continued on... That's been my experience on Beemer's for 35 years. Sometimes they'd stop me to just talk about bikes, and then tell me to be safe, and then head out, as my brother. Very cool. I love those old Beemer's! Enjoy, bro.

    Mine's got dual discs up front, actually. An upgrade the former owner did - He also converted to handlebar mounted master cylinder. I think I'm happy with the lower gearing and the 32mm Bings for now as the airhead will be mostly for putting around town and the R9T will be for longer trips@@j.b.8767

    If you bought your Beemer from a dealer, or get it serviced at one, ask for two or three of the straps that are used to tie down new bikes when they are delivered. They make GREAT straps for keeping your gear in place. Your buddy that has a bike shop should be using Rok-Straps, not bungees, they fail at the worst times. Nice video.

    If you wanted to know whether that is a real GS, you should have put on your latest Klim gear and drove it to Starbucks, where you would have waxed poetically about $20k of upgrades and acessories you made to your bike for about 45 minutes, and then back to the climate controlled garage. Once you amd your bike survive that great adventure, you have earned the right to the very prestigious "real GS owner" title. But seriously, that was a great video. About 20 years ago I had the same thing happen to me, where my bag got stuck in a wheel and I highsided going xxx mph on a TL1000S. 7 days in a hospital. Took me 7 years to get back on the bike again. Back to exploring those Cali roads. I will have to check out Dave's shop next time I am riding that way.

    me tell you that's all bullshit form the big GS gang. Before those there was the R80GS. I rode and owned them. Then the R100GS Paralever. Then the R1100 GS Telelever. I've had them all. My friend, Ed Culbertson was the first to cross the Darien Gap on an R80GS. Took two tries then rode on down to Ushuaia, ARG. To the bottom and back. 1985 or so. Passed of ALS. Good motorcycle. The new Urban GS is a better version of the original. Much of everything we desired and then some. Power, weight, charging capability, competent handling, suspension. I have 2023 and many more . I really, trully enjoyed this. Thanks for taking us on an awesome ride. I ride a 25 year old 1150gs with the Unit Garage kit, a stunner, makes for an endless conversation starter wherever I go. I'm on the fence about getting me an Urban GS, test road it a couple of weeks ago, almost fell in love with it. So much mora manageble than the big GS bikes and just fun for exploring. I totally see myself doing long days with it. The only reservation I have is potentially not being that comfy for the pilion? I guess you proved that works? Quick question, how is the Unit Garage fairing compared to stock? Love your edditing, loved the vibe. Keep on ridin'!

  • @FOURfabrication

    @FOURfabrication

    Thanks! I have the Unit Garage suspension raising kit, it’s got some more travel and it’s more comfy. I had it valved for the max wait so it’s ideal when riding two-up. I also have a seat from Rich Phillips Cycles. It’s the same thickness as stock but it’s got an inch or two of extra length. Neither the stock fairing or the Unit one are tall enough to push wind over my helmet, but the Unit one is a little better and I like that it looks like an R80GS

  • @gapexx

    @gapexx

    7 ай бұрын

    @@FOURfabrication Aah that explains it, the 40mm rise kit, gotcha. Thanks the tip about the seat, never considered a longer seat, since I was planning to use the Unit seat that comes with the tank upgrade, makes a lot of sense for the pilion what you did. Is the seat more comfortable than stock for you? I does look mean with the R80 fairing : ) I was actually expecting it to be making more dirty air being a bit bigger than the original. I never managed to get these "half" screens to work, too small to blow the wind over the helmet, but can create a lot of buffeting. Rode a rNinet Scrambler, it was actually the most comfortable out of all since all you have pushing against you is clear air. Really appreciate your answer, thank you.

I did 91,000 miles on an R1100GS in GB and Europe between 1996 and 2010. Gearbox bearings were the main issue. Have you had any trouble with the Urban G/S? Oil seal[s] leaking at the heads? I see you don't have the stock exhaust can but can you give a guess as to whether or not the left bag would clear a stock can adequately? Their website says it's compatible, but just wanted some more input before ordering. In case it matters, I don't have a suspension raising kit, but I do have a Nitron rear shock with hydraulic preload adjuster so I can crank that up when when fully loaded with pillion.
