The Upholland Pepper Pots, Upholland Lancashire

Mr H goes on a early morning bimble to take a look at three curious brick structures that rise out of the ground and tower above the farmers fields in the village of Upholland in Lancashire, that are known locally as the ' Upholland Pepper Pots' to find out what they are and why they was built. Includes drone footage.

Myself and my mates grew up in Orrell during the late 70's early 80's so we've almost obviously walked through that tunnel several times, with only 2 scheduled trains an hour it looked like no problem at all, but the occasional goods train had us hiding out of the way in the cut outs in the tunnel walls..

Visited the Pepper Pots today. After asking permission, we parked the car at Pimbo Garden Centre, the Pepper pots are a 10 mins walk from there. On our return to the garden centre (very well stocked with plants and can recommend a visit there, they also have an excellent cafe and toilets). From there its a short car journey to Ashurst Beacon country park - great place to take your dogs for a run about.

Liking the drone footage mr H for a first outing it went well with no crash, as often happens on drone photography. A definite step up from the early days of the camera on a brush handle.

Hi Duncan, and apologies for only just getting round to replying to you, Thankfully the drone has a 'Home' feature which will bring it back to and automatically land it at the same spot that it took off from which I used on this outing. As you say it's definately a step up from the 'Mr H Extendapole' as I used to call it and hopefully I'll get to use it more as the weather starts to improve. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video, thanks for commenting and all the best.

Just found you and subscribed. I have lived in the area since I was a boy in the early 70's. But surprisingly I have never seen half of these structures you have shown. I drone fly myself, and love capturing local landmarks and historic buildings aswell as new developments. But I will certainly be paying a visit to a few of these structures and doing a drone fly. Thanks very much, keep them coming. Del 👍

Those slits in the brickwork could be to allow bats to fly in and out after the tops were capped off. 🦇

Just watched this one as this is very close to where I now live near the Orrell end of the tunnel. I’ve enjoyed the videos I’ve seen today, namely this, Rainford Caves and Billinge Hill. I am also a keen drone enthusiast and would love to help with some footage for a future video or two. Just drop me a line. 👍🏼👍🏼

Hi Gwyn, and apologies for only just answering you. The pepper pots are located in the fields along the railway line between 'Pimbo Lane' in Upholland and 'Sandbrook Road' in Orrell. However if you want to walk to them then the best way to get to them is to park up outside of '1 Kilburn Road' (WN5 8UG) this will put you on the corner with 'Lawns Avenue'. Walk towards the cross road with Lawns Avenue and turn left heading up what looks like a dirt track towards a farm and you should pass a little playground on your right. Keep heading towards the farm which is 'Lawns Farm' and enter the farmyard, do not worry as you are on a public footpath and are not tresspassing. Once inside the farmyard you should pass a beautiful K6 telephone box on your left which is worth taking a look at as the farm owners have put a little bit of history and some old photographs of Lawns Farm inside the telephone box for walkers to look at. Once you've had a look at the telephone box, pass the farmhouse on your right and if the dogs are out don't worry they are friendly enough and follow the footpath towards the back of the farm. Then it's a bit of a climb up a small hill which once you reach the top will bring you out onto a footpath with fences either side of it. Just keep walking along this footpath until the pepper pot I filmed with the drone comes into view and once you get to that you will see the second pepper pot in the distance and the footpath leading to it. To get to the final pepper pot just make your way to the second one and again you'll see the last one in the distance and the footpath leading to it. Then simply retrace your steps to get back to Kilburn Road. Hope this helps and all the best. 👍

I agree that in years to come modern day eyesore could become beauties in the future just like I guess Victorian factories are today back in Victorian England I bet they was ugly to Victorians.
