Yes, clingers deal 100 damage so if you dont have any shields, you will instantly die, but if you have at least 1 shield you won't die. So because the clinger waits 1 or 2 seconds before exploding, and Slurp also takes 1 or 2 seconds to use and immideately gives you a little bit shield, that could probably save him.
