My grandmother never went to the movies as she got older. She kept promising she would take me to see Malcolm X because it was an important movie. She rushed her work (as a maid) that day so she could leave at a decent time. She got us there about 30 minutes before the intermission (I missed most of the first half). We watched the rest of the movie together. My grandmother was born in 1927 and I was 13 when this movie came out. We never went to the movies again. She died at the age of 83 in 2010. Thank you so much Granny. ❤

Of course Spike Lee was the right choice to direct the movie and he did a PHENOMENAL job!!! Only WE know how it feels to be us, so WE definitely need to tell OUR stories!!! I watch this movie annually, not only did Brother Shabazz (PBUH) save my life but this film was a fruitful experience that did such a wonderful job complimenting the book. Spike Lee said, "It has to be done, right" and he really overachieved with incredible collaborations with legendary music composer Terence Blanchard delivering a sensational score and then Denzel who turned into Brother Malcolm, spent time with his family, learned Arabic and went on a Muslim diet. The amount of dedication and effort put towards this film trumps every movie made that year!

Saddest irony about this project? I always made the argument that WB missed out on one particular aspect of this great film... Denzel and the DC world. What do I mean? Watch how convincingly Denzel played a 20-something Malcolm despite being in his mid-30's while filming. Notice how he depicts Boston Red... the sharp zoot suit, the whiplash reaction to that dude at the bar. And that laugh... tell me he couldn't have played The Joker! He even had a blonde girlfriend that looked like Harley Quinn! It didn't hurt that the time period depicted in those early scenes was the same era that Batman became popular. He definitely had that cool cat, villanous vibe while playing Boston Red. Shame they also didn't get to portray his early friendship with another Brother by the name of Detroit Red. Of course, we know him today as Redd Foxx...❤

Malcolm Jarvis the man who converted Malcolm to Islam and brought out the best in him is barely mentioned and not portrayed properly. Malcolm Jarvis was my next door neighbor all the years I grew up. He was close to six feet tall and very handsome. In the movie they should've switched the characters. Malcolm Jarvis the true hero and the person who turned Malcolm x into who he could be was not given his props. Sooo sad. Aside from being my teacher Malcolm X's teacher he played the trumpet so good it would make you cry. His trumpet sang it's own song in the hands of Malcolm Jarvis and he could blow . When he got to the high notes we could no longer hear those last few seconds every dog in the neighborhood howled for a while minute. WHY isn't there a movie about the man who made Malcolm X. Both his sons are gone now but he has a grandson in Atlanta Ga. Clifford Jarvis who is also a musician. If he take anything after his grandfather he should be another great black man. I listened to that trumpet every nite. The autobiography said he was a welder at EB and he was. The only welder who came home as clean as ge went to work. But all the years I grew up he played the same club in New London CT. On Bank St. From the 60 s till they shut the club down. They portray him as a welder. But he was a musician with a very nice house and car.

A capital Black. Not to be mistaken for either or. Black and never black when referring to culture primarily spearheaded by people who in (most) have been totally detached from their NATIVE TONGUES while everybody claiming professing and decrying to be other than; see more than their profits.

Indeed one of Denzel’s best performances, but after reading the actual book it’s a lot of stuff left out, and the film puts The Nation of Islam in a bad light and they had nothing to do with his assassination.

I felt that Laurence Fishburne would’ve played a better Malcolm X. Spike Lee did an injustice to Malcolm X.

It was ok the acting was good it wasn't factual to me plus it was done by a person who hated Elijah Muhammad.

They're playing to the FBA and ADOS cults that's popular on the internet. If people were to read through Malcolm's last speeches (there's a book available to read thru) they'd see that he often referred to Black people as Africans (regardless of where they were located). He also routinely used the term "Afro-American" to describe all Black/African descended people in the Western Hemisphere.
