The thing is, while Amico was floundering, the Evercade has proven the idea of a niche console with cartridge based games collections can work. The handheld has proven pretty popular with said niche, and the home version, the Evercade VS, is coming out on the 25th in the US. The difference is that they mostly sell actual retro games. While there are a few indie collections (mostly by companies that make new games for retro platforms, like Mega Cat or Piko), the majority of content is re-releases of retro titles in collections per cartridge. There's even an Intellivision collection, hey hey!

@@qurn Playmates Toys commissioned Shiny Entertainment to making an original character for a video game franchise and David Perry brought Doug into designing the game after he showed him the original sketch of the character. So I don't know what backwards logic you're ideating but the concrete reality is that Doug TenNapel CREATED Earthworm Jim. If you want to be really formal about it, then Doug TenNapel and David Perry created Earthworm Jim. If you wanna be even more anally retentive about it, then Playmates Toys, Doug TenNapel AND David Perry created Earthworm Jim. Just because he's a fucking lunatic doesn't mean you erase history like the SJWs on Twitter actively censoring and forcing altered reality on the entertainment industry. Bill Cosby CREATED The Cosby Show. John Kricfalusi CREATED The Ren & Stimpy Show. Michael Jackson CREATED the Thriller album. Adolf Hitler killed over 6 million Jews. Deal with the reality.

@@bombabombom3603 Yes, Hitler killed 6 million jews, I'm glad we at least agree on that. I'm not comfortable saying Doug created EWJ. It's a vague enough statement to have some truth, but could also be used to imply a bunch of stuff that isn't. What are we talking about? the game series? the first game? The IP? the character? And secondly, it erases David's involvement. If he had a major hand in creating EWJ, the character, then he is a Co-creator, but thats never made clear. I'd have to see something from David saying that Doug had major creative input into EWJ the character, before I'd be cool with that statement. Doug helped shape the IP, because he created Prof. monkey for a head and Evil the cat, I think? but saying Doug was one of the people who helped create EWJ is not the same as saying, Doug created EWJ. Saying that is erasing history.

Stop trying to make yourself look stupid by searching for a complicated alternative and just live by disassociating the screwball with the thing he or she made. I have a logistics problem with games only being E. There are gonna be a TON of publishers that will just not work with Amico because they don't want the artistic restriction. Trying to market a family friendly only console to the mainstream or retro market doesn't make the slightest sense business wise. The people behind Amico could have easily just use an existing or start their own online digital platform and entice developers from there instead. Developing and releasing your own console takes significant amount of time, resources and not to mention hiring the necessary talents like hardware and software engineers all of whom in no way going to be cheap.

It was glaringly apparent that Tommy had neither the money nor the skills to bring a console to market. Honestly no independent small team does anymore. The low end market is taken up by near perfect emulation on things like Raspberry Pi’s or smart phone boards. The bottom end market is already swamped by AT games. The upper end market needs billions to compete or even reach production. There is no niche for this thing. Everything about it radiates failure. Wacky proprietary controls. No 3rd party software developers, proprietary hardware in an overly expensive yet woefully underpowered main board.

It has the same problem that Butch Hartman’s Oaxis had. Neither has experience taking on a business with such a big ambition. Also it misses the mark on how family play became more uncommon: more video screens. You can’t undo that. Since the 80s, people put computers and laptops in their homes, and later smartphones and tablets. Might as well try to rewind the progress of technology that’s the only way you’ll get families to gather more again.

The Ouya, Atari VCS, The Playdate, Steam Deck, Analogue Pocket, EverCade, GPD Win 3, AYA Neo, AYN Odin, OneXPlayer, and Polymega all had succeed to exist. I guess the only Intellivision Amico that's working right now is the one Tommy had in his basement with his Spider-Man collection. So far the only Smach Z that still exist is the one the PHAWX had in his arsenal.

I think what helps Evercade is that they knew exactly what they wanted to make and had a realistic expectation of the size of their market. They knew they weren’t going to be running Sony out of business or revolutionizing handheld gaming as we know it. They spent just what they needed to spend to reach the people that welcomed the idea.

Even the freakin' Atari VCS 800 made it out and can be bought. That one seemed to have goals that were out of reach yet somehow, the people running it seemed out of touch, they succeeded. I own one and its a decent dual core PC if you want to boot windows and play emulators or low requirement games off steam, epic, gog.. etc.

You made a comment about an individual turning people away from a product. For some yes absolutely. That within itself would only affect sells of a product by a mere fraction. Price, quality of software, and advertising would be far more important to the consumer. If people based their buying decision more on individuals that work for a company, or leadership at said company, EA and Activision would have been out of business years ago. Everything else I agree 100%. Had a feeling you were going to cover this at some point lol.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way. It's really weird, too, because Kennedy and TenNapel have very little to do with this train wreck. The Evercade is a far more direct successor to the Retro VGS than Tallarico's footbath with free-to-play mobile games. TenNapel has almost no involvement with this mess. Tallarico said he would be an unpaid consultant on Earthworm Jim, a game that doesn't seem like it even exists. There's never been any indication he's otherwise part of the Amico team. An EWJ reunion photo from years ago doesn't change that. It's pretty transparent guilt by association and while Tommy has said some inexcusably dumb shit, that has nothing to do with Doug.
