I always interpreted Arnie’s death in Christine to have been an accident. Arnie was aiming for Lea, but she dodged the attempt and Christine crashed through the office launching Arnie through the windshield. (I don’t think that model of Fury had seatbelts). This is further evidenced by Christine mournfully playing “I’ll forever love you”. I chalk Arnie’s death up to his own mistake.

" -All I know is car goes _VROOM_ _VROOM_ and suddenly I'm selling my organs to cover the insurance". Absolutely hilarious and all too real. God I love this channel!

Christine is a genuinely awesome horror film. I avoided it for the longest time because it was about a sentient killer car, but finally watched it because it was freakin' John Carpenter doing Stephen King. No regrets.

This reminds me of a story my mom told me. When she was a teen, her and her friends when to see the movie Christine in theaters. Then on the way home, it was foggy on the roads and saw a car similar to Christine. they all started to freak out and almost got caught speeding home.

Yeah, Christine and Arnie make a mistake and he dies for it. She sits there, stops in the middle of her pursuit, and sing him a requiem. She actively mourns his death.I don't know how you see her actions and think she killed him at all intentionally.

@@26muca07 From what I've heard, there's a chance Christine didn't even have seatbelts, since they weren't very common in cars until the late 60s, and she's a model from '58.

There's a movie called The Wraith about a killer car where the car is the "good guy" Avenging the death of a murdered young man at the hand of local bullies.

The idea is ridiculous but you can make it work like Christine, the scene where she repairs herself should have won an Oscar. Its the best one but the most fun one is Maximum Overdrive, cocaine does wonders, come on King, admit, you had fun doing it plus the trailer gave us Halloween 3 score although you should have added ACDC music instead. And you get the dumb ones like "With Friends Like These"....well at least you get one funny scene where the driver gets possessed and says, "Noo!" in a laughable way.

Hows about the 70s cartoon Speed Buggy or the live action Saturday morning show Wonderbug?

It’s funny, my mom was just talking the other day about when she was little she had nightmares about a truck chasing her. We both live in Florida so the fear of getting hit by a car is pretty real. It’s pretty creepy how when you see a road of cars you cant really see the people inside them at all and that’s freaky to me. Although I’m surprised no one ever made a car horror movie about a mini van with automated doors that slice a kids hand off, have really tight seatbelts, and of course child safety locks. Just saying it’d be an interesting and relatable take that might stir some childhood memories.

It already has kind of. Hot Tub Time Machine 2 had a subplot about a self driving car trying to murder one of the characters, but nobody saw it because its shite. And I don't know how that movie ended sucking so much, the first was great and the self driving car with a lethal grudge idea could be comedy gold if done right.

I would love to hear your thoughts on The Hitcher (1986). I know it's considered a thriller and not a horror movie, and I guess it would fit in the "stranger danger" category, but in a way, it can be seen as a twist on the "killer car" movies. "Killer on the road, but even closer than you think : on the passenger seat".

I really enjoyed Death Proof. The final conflict being between the old guard of Hollywood stuntmen being brought to justice by the young female stunt drivers and car enthusiasts seems to me to act as a critique of gate keeping, especially in the typically male centric car world.

Jae Erwin I completely agree! That movie gets such a bad rep, but I thought it was a fairly fun and unique film of the time. Really enjoyed the ending! Lol!

Christine is a book and film I became attached to in High School, I never realized when I picked it up how many comparisons I would draw with my own situation of being bullied. For me it focuses on that heavily, showing how far a person will go if they get pushed too hard and belittled enough. Christine (and in the book the spirit of the owner) personify sheer rage, and as King put it Fury, Arnie becomes exposed to it and uses it like a drug, fueling him to kill everyone that has ever wronged him. For me Christine was a warning, in that as much pain as you feel from these people, it's entirely possible to walk over the edge of sanity and never come back.

"The Car" (1977) really spooked me as a kid , if that car isn't the 'vehiculomorphisation' of the Devil , then I'm Jesus. Some great characters in it as well - one old guy tells a horn playing hitch hiker that if he makes any more noise he will 'shove it so far up your ass you'll be fartin' to music for a year' - or something similar. James Brolin as well , always class.

Man, I'm just happy that Killdozer was shown. That's probably one of my favorite underrated killer vehicle movie.

Thank you for making this video! Christine is one of my favorite movies/books and you explained what I like about it better than I could. Duel is a movie I haven't thought about in a long time. I watched that one at a very young age, and it definitely stuck with me. I still get a little nervous sometimes when a big truck is behind me.

When I was very small, my family went on a trip. We stopped at a truckstop. We got out and were crossing on foot, when a truck pulled up really close and - I don't actually remember - he either gunned the engine at us, or laid on the air horn - I'm sure he thought it was hilarious but it scared the crap out of me.

8:29 I mean, I think the open road desert setting is prominant because 1. It's cheaper than trying to block off a street for filming in a city or town 2. It allows the cars to go as fast as they want without worrying about weaving around busy locations or the chase being halted very abruptly by heavy traffic.

Cars up until about the last decade have been symbols of freedom. The ability to go wherever you want whenever you want. And the killer car is some madman using that freedom to kill and maim.

Plus it's cheap to film, all you need a car with dark windows, some dummies, and a camera.

Duel and Christine always my favorite killer car flicks. each have nail-biting edit, poising synthesizer theme, also there's Spielberg and Carpenter.

I'm old enough that I remember when Duel and later Christine were in drive-ins... I was still pretty young and I can't tell you how terrifying they both were, especially Duel! I was traumatised! Though Mad Max later again traumatised me much much more!!!

Christine is one of those goofy movies I just stand by.

Man I haven't thought about Christine in years. That movie genuinely freaked me out when I was a kid. Especially that scene where the car forces itself through a gap to kill that guy.

I just love how Carpenter turned Christine into a cautionary tale against nostalgia by having a 1980s kid becoming a 1950s toxic jerk and now our nostalgia for the 1980s is responsible for all those Carpenter remakes and maybe even the election of Trump.

Maximum Overdrive, the first Stephen King movie I watched. Honestly, it was a fun watch. Also, I hope that Futurama's werecars get referenced.

Indirectly, yes. The original werecar is an homage to 'The Car' (1977) as seen at 26:06 in this video.

There are some creators who's content i hardly care about at all in terms of topic, but who i still love to watch because of the quality of their content and personality. This is one of those channels. I don't particularly like horror movies, nor do i watch many of them, but the way ryan makes his videos is so interesting and entertaining that i can somehow always enjoy watching film reviews of horror movies I've never seen, and don't particularly care to. Keep up the good work -a guy who doesn't like horror but likes you 👍

I would add the end of "Breakdown" (not the whole movie) where a semi truck and a pickup truck are on this nauseatingly high bridge and he's trying to force them off.

Duel is easily one of my top ten favourite films of all time.

How dare you! Christine doesn't "eject" Arnie, *he* was driving and didn't wear his seat belt! Christine didn't know that objects in motion tend to stay in motion... 😃

@@kaylemkerr6989 I have; they're about equal, a few changes but nothing that takes any enjoyment out: the removal of the mafia sub-plot from "Jaws" (the real reason the mayor didn't want the beaches closed, later resorting to killing the Sheriff Brody's cat), letting marine biologist Hooper live, removing the sub-plot where Ellen Brody has an affair with Hooper, having John Hammond not be villainous, demoting Ian Malcolm to a lesser character so as to focus more on Grant and Sattler, the dinosaurs travelling to Costa Rica, and Malcolm dying.

Yes, I just actually read a collection of Richard Matheson's short stories and I was disappointed that time hasn't been kind to a lot of them. In the story, the protagonist's last name is "Mann" (like, Everyman) and the name inscribed on the truck is "Keller" which he reads as "Killer" - it's just so corny. The movie has definitely held up better. I would've liked to see the truck auditions.

@@parisgreen4600 I don't know, I feel that, other than the aforementioned "Duel", a lot of his short stories and novels have held up pretty well, especially stuff like "Prey", "Mute", "Now You See Me", "Hell House", and many others. Still, there are those that don't seem quite as good anymore, like "Witch War" or "Madhouse".

I can tell you're not a car enthusiast, if you ever start building a car, bike, or truck and just enjoy a long scenic drive you'll understand why it's an escape for some of us

I've watched most of Ryan's videos twice or thrice now. Once as intended, the others to fall asleep to his soothing voice. I especially love these specials because they are so much longer than the regular videos. Great job as always Ryan, looking forward on putting this one on for the second time soon!

not only do i appreciate you taking a look at one of my favorite niche horror subgenres but now i have you to thank for another movie to add to my list when i subject my loved ones to killer car marathons. how have i not thought of counting rubber? thank you for giving me another excuse to show people that masterpiece as well as reminding me of a few classics. this is a great video and i always thought i was the only one who saw the deeper symbolism in the genre. like, the genre rarely gets talked about except for death proof, maximum overdrive, and christine. maybe jeepers creepers but no one mentions the truck and on rare occasions i've seen talk of duel and joyride. it's not really talked about enough and there's a surprisingly large number of movies that fall into the subgenre so, as with the giant spiders, it's really cool of you to talk about it like this. it's so weird and niche that i think it should be talked about more lol

Maximum Overdrive was a favorite of mine as a kid. It’s so loud and stupid that it’s more like a Saturday Morning Cartoon than a horror movie and I love it.

The only horror genre my dad likes. My grandma likes Jeepers Creepers. I love Rubber.

I get what Ryan is saying with he mistress/lover metaphor in Christine he did not realize that the relationship is actually a deal with the devil. Arnie desires to be tough and get the girl and Christine gives him what he wants but the price is his soul. Arnie becomes a murderer and loses his humanity.

Thank you Ryan! SO MUCH! Oh, and Happy Father’s Day! As a car fan myself, this was a topic I was eagerly awaiting to see you to cover. Christine is one of the most underrated films of all time IMO (especially coming from John Carpenter’s filmography), so I’m so elated to see you give it the spotlight it deserves. Honestly, the end feels more symbolic. Christine is so obsessed with killing Leigh, that she doesn’t consider Arnie’s safety, and Christine even briefly mourns for him when he dies. Arnie dies for letting his flaws and first urges take so much control that his common sense goes out the window. Christine not having seatbelts didn’t help, of course. Oh yeah, and Duel. That’s one of my late granddad’s favorite films, so it deserves some spotlight, too.

I was suffering from an extreme, dark depression. Then, this very day it was brought to my attention that there is a movie called "Killdozer" that does in fact exist. Now my depression is cured.

I'm very glad that all three of my favourite killer car movies was mentioned. Duel, Christine and The Cars that ate Paris.

This is going to my personal favorite playlist. I grew up with killer car movies and it's my favorite topic of all time. Plus you're doing an analysis on "The House That Jack Built" next? Oh boy I'm waiting for that.

I think an element of the horror in these films also comes from our sublimated fear of the car accidents one encounters as a driver; the same thing that makes us rubber-neck accidents while simultaneously trying NOT to think about the danger we're putting ourselves in whenever we merge onto the freeway. We live a mostly comfortable life into which car accidents are, for many, their only real life experience of violent death and gore. The only context in which decapitations and so forth are anything other than theoretical. I'm surprised you didn't mention at least as an aside films like "Hereditary" and "Final Destination 2" that aren't killer car flicks as such but definitely derive key moments of onscreen terror from the situation of horrific car accidents. No supernaturally animate cars are involved, but the accident itself is what STICKS with you from both films.

Hey Ryan, in the video I noticed you talked about questioning why Christine all of the sudden rejects Arnie, after wanting him all to herself. I'm pretty sure that Christine didn't mean to kill him. It was an accident after She missed, and slammed into office room. You can feel the sense of Christine losing her loved one, as Arnie Feels her with his blood covered fingers.

I believe the scene where Arnie gets ejected through the windshield of Christine was more his fault. Since he was driving instead of Christine trying to kill his girlfriend, and being a 1958 Plymouth made in a time when seat belts were an option/not being available at all. it was pretty dumb on his part.

It’s Father’s Day today and as me and my mom sat down to watch some tv there was a marathon on an old movie channel of father themed horror movies as a way to celebrate I guess? which made me think of the fathers role in horror movies. I’d love to see do a video on that someday! I always look forward to these video they’re sooo well done!

Jeepers Creepers and Rubber are honestly some of my favorite horrors. It'll be cool to see a full video dedicated to the meanings and symbolism behind Rubber 🙂.

Hey, thanks for this video! I've seen a couple of the big movies in this subgenre but never gave much thought to them. This was an entertaining look at the deeper ideas behind them. Also, that bit on Rubber was fantastically meta.

I know it's not in the same genre but The Hitcher was an amazing horror film for me. It kinda has the same atmosphere as these movies but it hits the spot.

I remember the first time i saw Christine, man i loved that movie, my brother likes cars and left it on the TV and was just as surprised as me when we actually agreed on liking the a thing.

I noticed your post on your twitter about the lack of interest from your audience and I gotta say, whoever is skipping over this is missing out on something fun! I personally skipped the spider video (I’m an extreme arachnophobe and a vid like that would put me in a high-strung anxiety state for a week) so seeing one of your vids that focuses on a genre instead of singular flick that I can watch is an exciting little shake up! This was awesome!

Hey, well, having a car means something when your country is so big that walking across it takes 6 months. A car is freedom, baby!

The reason Christine's film has such a bizarre ending is because it was changed by the movie. In the novel, Arnie actually does try to resist Christine's influence at the last moment, for which she kills him; this works really well with the established metaphor of Christine as a toxic relationship in mechanical form, because she immediately flips out and kills him for this one transgression. Although even there it comes out of nowhere after Arnie has been Christine's willing puppet for the whole story. In the movie, however, there's no real attempt to convey any sense of resistance, so it just comes out of nowhere, especially with the film-unique scene of Arnie stroking her bumper, making it clear that his love for her never wavered.

Wasn't even aware that there were so many killer car films! Great video as always!

Cool video! It’s fun to hear a non-car nut’s take on flicks like Duel and Christine. Most videos I’ve seen on them they just talk about how cool the cars are!
