The Unsolved Mystery of the WW2 Navy Airship That Returned Without Its Crew

On the morning of August 16th, 1942, the U.S. Navy airship L-8 departed Treasure Island to patrol the San Francisco coast for Japanese submarines. With two trained pilots aboard, it should have been a routine mission to fly 30-miles out into the Pacific to the Farallon Islands before completing a round trip around San Francisco Bay. After responding to a suspicious sighting, however, the airship returned to land. It crashed in the middle of an intersection, with the balloon falling on a car. In a mysterious twist, its two crew members were not onboard. They would never be found...

The XO at a Naval Air Station where I was stationed (back in the 1970's) got his wings in LTA - "lighter than air". They looked like regular Navy pilots wings except the wing was only on one side (he later qualified for multi engine aircraft). He told me a story that back in the day, each airship facility (there were several on each coast) had its own helium-manufacturing plant. (You can still see one at NAS Tillamook, OR). Helium was extremely expensive, and they were taught to NOT waste it. To launch, you had to let helium out of storage into the "bag", and the airship would rise. You couldn't put the helium back into compressed storage while aloft. When you're flying along at, say 1,000 feet, the airship is at "neutral buoyancy", it can neither climb nor descend. Now, how do you descend, and land ? It was frowned upon to vent the expensive helium into the surrounding air. Pilots were trained to "get 500 lbs heavy". The most common methods of doing this were: (1) Try to find a rain shower and fly under the rain cloud, letting a lot of water stick to the bag. Generally, this method would achieve the desired results, if there was a handy rain shower nearby. (2) The airship had a large bucket with a winch and cable system. The crew could lower the bucket, fill it up with water from the ocean, and gain weight that way (water is pretty heavy stuff, coming in at about 8.3 lbs/gallon as an estimate). Sometimes the crew would bring home dinner in the bucket as they winched it up. In this instance, it would appear the crew might have been engaged in filling their bucket, and weren't secured in the airship. They fell out.

@@noalear By maintaining forward airspeed and flying slightly nose up, the ship develops aerodynamic lift in same way ( albeit much less efficiently ) tat an aircraft wing does, which compensates for the extra weight. Of course, if the airship slows down or stops, the aero lift disappears and the airship will necessarily descend unless the water bucket or internal water ballast is dropped to lighten the ship and reestablish neutral or positive buoyancy.

@@meetoo594 You would think so, but no official search of the cliff was ever undertaken according to the Navy incident report. It was assumed that the contact with the cliff wasn't "signifigant enough for the men to have disembarked by their own volition", but that doesn't mean they didn't fall out. I personally imagine they opened the door to try to push back against the cliff, hoping to "bounce" the blimp away from its side (like kicking a boat off from the pier, that sort of move). The blimp wasn't particularly huge, and this kind of force could actually have had an impact... but if they screwed up somehow or a sudden gust of wind rammed them into the cliff hard enough with that door open, especially if one of the men was attached to the other to try to prevent exactly this from happening... well, gravity does the rest. Another thing to consider is the way the gondola attached at multiple points to the helium sac. If the the blimp was pressed into the side of a cliff with a little steady wind, the sac could catch and "roll" the gondola significantly, tipping the men out, especially if the door was open.

My theory is that they made a mistake and misjudged their altitude and got stuck on that cliff. At that point they either abandoned the ship thinking that the situation was hopeless or fell out in some kind of attempt to free it. The wind probably changed and freed it from the cliff without the crew onboard.

  • @nateweter4012

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I believe something happened on that cliff. They may have exited the gondola attempting to free it and perhaps fell to their death there, wildlife taking care of the remains. That or they fell into the sea somehow. The locking lever being removed confirms they left the gondola at some point. Over the sea in while in the fog, or on that cliff is where the incident took place, I believe.

This is most likely what happened. Mistake navigating the balloon, causing ti to get stuck on th cliff, exited the gondola in order to free the balloon, and either perished due to falling to their deaths, or the wind changed, the balloon freed itself and got away before the crew could climb back into the gondola, and they "disappeared" so as not to be reprimanded by their superiors. Even at idle, a lighter than air vessel would either head nose first at a slow pace, or drift with the prevailing wind. If the conditions were right, once freed it could have gained altitude rapidly, or gotten away at a decent pace, preventing the crew from re-boarding the vessel. The cliff is possibly where one of the gas cells in the envelope got punctured, resulting in the craft landing shaped like a pretzel.

@@berkeleygang1834 Simply being in the drink near the Farallons for more than a few hours will reduce you to shark food. There are so many sharks in this area it's as if it's just sharks eating sharks. My opinion is they ended up in the water for whatever reason, were dined on by sharks, then the remnants cycled out into the Pacific per the currents. What remains of them are probably lost in the mass of garbage out in the dead zone.

I've flown on Goodyear's airship American 3 times, The pilot either didn't know about the crash or was told not to mentioned it. I learned something new watching this video, thanks!. It flew out of the Long Beach area in Southern Calif., it was a lot of fun and really interesting to fly on the blimp. Here's a couple of tidbits about the airship.......when you take off it's practically vertical, same when you land, it feels like you're diving rather than landing. Cruising speed was around 35 miles an hour, you could stick your head out of the window and look around and directly below. The take off and landing was performed with a large wheel like on a sail boat that sat between the pilots legs and he'd turn the wheel which sent probably water forward or backwards to pitch the nose up or down.

Exhaust leak from one of the engines. The blimp controlled its altitude by forcing air from the engine into a large bladder inside the helium. The more air you forced into it the less lift you had. The engines had an exhaust leak and the bladder was full of air heavily contaminated with Carbon Monoxide. When they started bleeding that air out of the bladder to slow their descent the gondola was flooded with it and they were both knocked out by the fumes. Thats when the blimp began slowly descending while circling , both pilots were unconscious at the controls. At some point , one (or both) of the crew regained conscience and abandoned the aircraft. This could have happened at any time from when it was circling low over the water until it hit the cliff. In all likelyhood the impact with the cliff wasn't the only time it made contact with the ground and the crew probably got out at one of those times , but with blood saturated with Carbon Monoxide they wouldn't have been able to walk (or crawl) more than a few yards at a time before collapsing from exhaustion, and would be VERY susceptible to death by exposure. (Their thinking would also be heavily impaired) They probably crawled under some brush to rest and died of hypothermia that night because their oxygen deprived bodies couldn't generate enough heat to keep them alive when the temperature dropped.

He said the problem with the theory of the love triangle or whatever not being possible was because there were many witnesses immediately at the crash site. But the blimp didn’t land there first, as he said it landed briefly on a beach head. I’m not saying this is what happened because it’s very strange, but if there was a murder for whatever reason, the pilot could easily have gotten off on the beach, or even when it reportedly dove down to a very low level of 30 ft off the water and been picked up by one of the boats. The mechanic being ordered to stay also lends the case to a conspiracy.
