Right? I always used to get the feeling that I was a terrible "human" for the dog to have when he would engage in these problems. It's a huge relief to know that it's near universal if not completely.

In the same position, we are 5 days in and the only time he's not pushing boundaries is when he's sleeping

Really interesting. Our 4 month old retriever has started to push boundaries, with not always coming when called, jumping on furniture and stealing things from worktops

I have a Shepherd/Staffie mix, and he's 3 months old. He does great with his training. He sits, gives paw, lays down, but when he gets over excited, even with the line I seem to struggle cause he gets more aggressive. He bites harder, and growls and lunges at my legs. I've used the line tool, I've used the collar tool, I've used redirection and he still does it, so its definitely a challenge.

11 month old husky owner here - this is super useful info. My boy tests EVERY boundary at the moment. He's really going for it, but it's also great to see him working stuff out and making good choices again when dialling back reminds him what he should be doing. He's gonna be such a great boy when he's fully mature. I didn't have your channel to help with my previous huskies - this journey has been MUCH more productive. Thank you

My 3 month old Doberman climbed over the baby gate when we were gone for a few hours which blew our minds when we came home. So now it's definitely back to the crate

Somehow shots are always fired at a mischievous husky 😂. All dogs should be crated ...if gone for more than 2 hours in the first 3-5 years . Protects them from making a poor decision . You wouldn’t leave a young child home alone . My 2 year old husky is extremely obedient and has never chewed anything . However any dog can get the crazy zoomies,if boredom kicks in haha.

This is such a relief to know it's all natural and that its okay to go back a few steps. Our pup was foot perfect until she began ignoring us when off lead at 8 months.

I have raised four dogs and just got a new puppy. My experience is they all 'backslide' when they reach adolescence and we have to revisit the basics again. This is a little different for every dog, but I have yet to experience a dog that doesn't have some teenage difficulties. I have a couple of months with this pupper until I anticipate she will start challenging me. How did everything work out?

7 months is probably the most challenging stage of puppy training. It can get frustrating, but never give up. Keep it fun and make sessions short.

@@lidip8700 The puppy milk teeth incisors were not coming out, so he was frustrated with an erupting adult fangs coming on. I am going to have him neutered and teeth pulled next week.

I find for certain breeds in service dog teams, the teen phase hits about 12 to 24 months then stops. Its almost like an alarm. Just had to retrain and bring in different techniques.

Wow, it’s crazy when I watch these videos, I’m learning how much I DON’T know about dog behaviour. So informative, so insightful, so incredible helpful, and best of all these videos really inspire me to want to spend more time training my dogs.

Yeah, I am learning my poodle is smarter than me. And his big sister also a toy.

Had to put our 6 month old lab on longline in dog park…he jumped on a picnic table and was about to jump the fence!…AND we couldn’t believe how he was able to squirm under the gates!! So he gets his walk and then a wee more freedom in dog park…on longline…training on other matters in fenced yard…longline has been a game changer…

my new puppy is around 6 or 7 months. I've only had him since January 4th. He is pooping inside at times. He has unlimited energy, pulls on the leash with his mouth, and seems to be teething by using my hand to lightly bite me. There's quite a few training things I need to accomplish

Great video at a great time! Our puppy is almost 10 months now and he is definitely testing his limits. Certainly not as badly as I thought he would. I'm so proud of him! We do nosework and he can sit down when he finds the smell. We also started agility training a few weeks ago. He has brought such happiness to our lives.

Omg my 4 month old Aussie doodle is going through this phase right now. He’s has a new confidence and loves to not listen to us! Our whole day feels like “no no no!” Especially in our backyard, he loves to eat everything 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ beyond frustrating. We even hooked him up to a leash outside while we did yard work and he chewed himself free!!!!

Really want to hear more from Meg & Highlight. Sounds like we both have extremely socialable, friendly dogs. And I'm having a very similar teenage phase to what Meg described as well.

I like that you bring up the Teen phase & the bit of stubborn stage that may appear around 4 months as the world becomes more stimulating. Many dogs in shelters are in the Teen phase...where the owners couldn't handle behavior they weren't expecting. Regardless of breed, I don't expect any dog to act like an "adult" until 2 yrs of age......meaning I don't expect them to have completely mastered what I've taught them until then. It allows for much more patience with both the new dog & training. The Teen phase can be challenging at times, even with a dog you've spent a lot of time training. Consistency is key while keeping in mind there will be times when old lessons will need to be reinforced. Pretty much the same as you would children. My 3 1/2 mo old great pyrenees/lab mix has been showing some stubbornness of late. lol

I love your videos! I’d love to see a video done by Meg on how she trains her dog and encourages/discourages certain behaviors around her young child. I’m in this situation currently. We have a 10-month-old dog with a 2-year-old child and 6-year-old child. Luckily, the dog is doing overall very well, but I want to make sure I encourage a positive/healthy relationship amongst all of them.

You two are full of great information & examples, that's why I watched you again, I need all the I can get with my teenage, 11 month old Staffie!!!!

Right? I had seen it periodically in my feed and would watch a video without realizing it was the same channel. It's fantastic, isn't it? I'm thinking of maybe getting a course. This is a response to a one year old video, I know. But I agree and just found this video now.

This is me right now. I love my pup but it's been challenging. I got her when she was around 7 weeks from a refugee. I don't know what happened to the mom, but she was in for adoption. First months were great, but bam, she hit those 4.5 months and she is just a rebel at heart xD She is hyperactive and a bitter. I've been doing the tips from the past videos regrading this issue, but we still have some way to go. So this is very helpful, thanks.

I’ve got a 10 month pit mastiff mix and she’s always been the sweetest with people and she’s pretty good with other dogs she just loves to constantly test us now. I know she hears us when we call her and sometimes I gotta ask a few times for her to listen to a command. I’ve been researching ways to train her bc she knows a lot already she just doesn’t listen very well anymore.

My dog is four months old now and of all the tutorials and guides I watched, your videos have been by far the most helpful from day 1. Even though I don't crate train, I can apply a ton of your tips to my training and it's helped a LOT. Now that my pup is entering his first teenage phase, I'm genuinely grateful knowing I have more tricks up my sleeve that I know will actually make a difference.

Just a tip, no worries if you don't want to crate train, at four months I definitely did not. I very rarely close the door on Alfred's crate. He turned one around xmas, I very rarely close the door on his crate but he is fine with it when I do. To do that I just gave him the cage, put treats in through the top and lo and behold he loves it. Like, it gives him a spot. It's basically his "I don't wanna hang out with you, Dad! Why do you always hate my loud heavy metal music?! Leave me alone!" The heavy metal music bit is his chewing on stuff he knows he shouldn't be chewing on. But like I said, I rarely if ever close the cage and while he doesn't go in it all the time, he goes in there a bit every day just when he doesn't want to be bothered. Wishing you and your puppy the best. One of the best decisions I ever made was getting wee Alfie, what kind of dog is it, if you don't mind my asking? If you do, no worries.

I actually ended up getting my dog a little open cage / mini dog house that I hope he will start using as a cave of sorts to help calm himself down, like you said - a safe spot he can retreat to when he wants to be left alone. He's in his second puberty phase right now (hence why I came back to this video) and a real handful! But I can tell that at the end of the day, he's only adjusting to experiencing the world in a new way and I'm glad I can help him get through some of the stress. What kind of dog is Alfie? Mine's a Havanese.

I just got a 7 month old myself. If you mix up drill Sargeant with sweet they'll learn . Just be consistent. I got my puppy to start listening within 11 days. She's very stubborn and got aggressive with me twice. Was biting me. She tests me like the trainer in the video mentioned but I stay strong on her & scold her when she gets nasty. When I say "stop" & " no" I'm a firm louder voice She instantly corrects herself most of the time now. It's tough but remember it's worth it. Good luck!

@@jus.me.tanzks5834 it got sooo much better after we got a trainer to help us with training him. He immediately got over his separation anxiety phase after 2-3 sessions. He still does bark a lot to strangers but I think it's just his personality of schnauzer in general.

The training advice is so clear and so positive for both dog and human. I keep returning for suggestions and reassurance. The video editing is fabulous now, like the quick clip of a dog surfing a cheese sandwich. Sometimes a good laugh is what the harried pet lover needs most.

TONS of interesting and pertinent information in one single video‼️ 👍🏽‼️

Everybody with a young puppy needs to see this video. I have experienced this exact issue with several pups, and they can really try your patience for a while. You just have to keep in mind that it is a process of their brain growing up, and adjust training and try not to lose your temper (very often, anyway!). A lot of puppies get returned to shelters during those early 'teenage' months. But I've gotten 2 really good dogs by taking those nutty 4-8 month-old dogs that people did not how to handle.

My 9 month old GSD/ACD mix is starting to bark at dogs across the street now when before she would ignore or whine loudly. Thankfully though she has really good "look at me" drilled into since she was 10 weeks. So even if she starts barking I can usually reel her back in with a look at me, with or without treats. It's still gonna take work as she gets older and bolder(she was a very shy puppy around dogs).

Yes…my lab mix was afraid of everything…really shy and then just all of a sudden super confident and bratty

I'm training my SDIT. He's 10 months, almost 11. I was lucky because we started "Public access" training LONG before we knew he was even going to be a service dog. Ross, Petsmart, Dicks sporting, Home Depot, Hobby Lobby. We went to all of those places because he is half Aussie and I REALLY wanted him to be personable. His first outing was at like five or six weeks (Yea, I know. Breeder lied, got him at four weeks). Hell, when he was around five or six months he met his first baby. He was SO careful. Not even licking. Also taught him to walk close to strangers during that time. By the time I figured out that I actually qualified for disability, he was ready for longer and more complicated trips like a shopping trip to TJ max, who si also dog friendly. Now he easily goes into Aldi, Walmart, and has even dined outside with me twice, as well as a valentine trip to a dog friendly restaurant. He even went to the mall the other day for the first time. We are hittting that teen phase (Which is THANK GOODNESS not as bad as the 4/5 month stage where he was legit aggressive. Had to get him fixed at 5 months because he lifted his leg for the first time at three months and turned into a hormonal little monster about everything. He drew blood on both my parents and I multiple times. We worked hard and now he is much better. Still gets triggered when his "Treasures" are pulled from his mouth, but will drop it perfectly every time with no fight. He's just a bit slow at dropping it. Takes about 3 seconds for him to actually spit it out due to it usually being a paper towel and sticking to his tongue. Just don't pull it and he's fine. At least he doesn't bite now.) And he's getting a little more distractible. Because we train free range (Have five acres and pretty much no road) I've been thinking of getting a vibration collar for him. He has almost perfect recall, but I don't want him to learn about that "Almost" too much. Don't feel the need to get a shock collar, just something to redirect him. I am well trained in how to use pinch collars, regular collars, choke chains, and on horses bits and whips. I understand the corrections and have used those tools on myself many times. Especially the pinch collar. I must know the tool to use it. Off topic, but when I was choosing spurs for my horse when she was ready to start higher level work, I stabbed that spur into my ribs and stomach as hard as I physically could. All for naught though because she ended up having a back injury flair up and was out of work for like three months.

My puppys first owner gave up at 4 months. Teen phase now. This video helps.

I have a 4 month old Newfie and we are going to obedience classes but I am learning so much more by watching all of your videos. Because of you I feel so much more confident in my training, and less anxious about how I will get through the teenage years with a 100 lb bear. By working and training him with a lot of your advice, I already see such a difference in his behaviour and in making good choices on his own. I truly can't thank you enough.

My 21 month old boarder collie has started to bump people and dogs he doesn’t know ( he doesn’t do it with the dogs he already knows as friends). He has been really difficult to train outdoors because of the distractions ( food and toys have not worked regardless of how exciting i maid them). Inwent back to using a long line again recently so I dan tell him to lay down then make a huge game of he approaches a new dog and gets ready to bump. He has been attached a few times and I’m worried he will be again. He is not I. The least bit aggressive. Please help!

I have a 7 month old border collie. You can tell that she is so easily distracted when others are around. Treats and squeaky balls have been a blessing to get her to focus.

Love this video and really am taking on board the advice to dial back the freedom, my puppy is 7 months and where his recall was pretty good actually, now he's not all of the time, so I need to bring back the long leash and go back to using it on walks. Isn't as much fun but I need to set him up for success of course..

I am enjoying your videos and thankful for advice. I have a 6 mos old male toy poodle which I thought I was able to give more freedom as I thought he was potty trained-but your video caught me not being consistent...My fail. All of a sudden he is missing the pad, pooping where he wants and I started the start over technique. Its been 4 days of hooking him to the houseleash, standing over the tray, removing several potty spots to just one, and he can hold all day if he has to. The second I leave the room, he's pooping in the previous spots I took pads away from. I have condensed his potty spot to a two large pad situation, keep him on a house leash, praising him when he does (infrequent) potty 1 on the pads, but I he has completely reverted. I am beyond patient. This is my 6th poodle, and by far the hardest to train. He is quick with his heels, recalls, sits, and dances...so he's not stupid. Any video I might watch to help me with support and what I could be doing wrong....He is also sweetly a boss and takes all the toys from 3 yr old sister, kicks her out of the chair, takes her chew toys. I am constantly supervising 24/7. He's a gangster

Thank heaven, my pup suddenly seemed like she developed superhearing and is over stimulated by everything...barking at everything and demanding attention with mouthing and jumping. Glad its a stage I can trai through and not just a complete mental breakdown.

I have a Corso pitbull mix and she's incredible, thankfully I don't really struggle with her, she always looks at me for guidance, since she was a baby.

You guys are great!!! I wish you do training in US!! So clear n so much better than the class I pay to attend.

I am dealing with the 6-7 month teenage phase right now with my Silken Windhound, Theo. He was the perfect puppy at 13 to 15 weeks. He learned so fast and seemed to instinctively be leash trained, always walking by me and sitting when i stopped. He was SO FOCUSED ON ME. BUT, i realize now that what I thought was natural obedience was really him being a scardy puppy. Now I have new obstacles. I am working to limit what decisions he can make in a given space now and I am trying to reign in spoiling him so that I still have ways to motivate him... MY QUESTION IS - What do you do when you live with another person that allows their dog too many freedoms? They leave their dog's food and toys out and they let it on the furniture whenever it wants. It whines and is so huge that it takes over every situation where it shares space with my dog. I feel like the training I dId before I moved into this space is all being undone. Now my pup has stopped coming when called, and I don't know how to realistically keep him out of the other dog's food and toys, especially when these items are left in shared spaces like the kitchen or living room. The play between the pups drives me nuts, too, because the other dog always wants too play and whines horribly when separated from my dog. But it is huge. I can only allow my pup to play for about 15 minutes at a time before he gets too tired and then avoiding great dane feet is too much for him.. The big dog NEVER STOPS COMING, it does not understand its size, and it IS STRONG, so it notices nothing about slight physical cues either. Advice anyone??? ?

I have always let my dogs on all the furniture and sleep in my bed with me. My only rules are no chew, no potty in the house, come when called, leave it, and sit. I only have one dog at a time. Too many is too hard :) I have a dog door and that is a big help. I have always noticed stages where they seem to forget the training. I always wondered why. Never realized they were just a rebel teenager :)

I think in that case it’s also really important to know which breed you own. This trainer knew she owns a border so the biggest challenge would be to catch things for the pup. And that would also be the thing to teach the pup at first to get the pup successfully through puberty. Every owner should know which breed they own and that should have a more important place in training :)

HELP! Our 3-1/2 month Cavapoo is coming along in her training. EXCEPT for 3 SERIOUS ISSUES: sweeping up a rock, or walnut in her mouth as we're walking around the outside of the house (on leash). She's short & close to the ground. Second issue:grawling/snarling & lunging to bite when I'm getting those rocks, walnuts, or any other object out of her mouth that is off limits. Third, I train her (following your videos), I feed/train with her kibble & chicken, so her food comes from me, I care for her, bath her, & groom, which she hates water), I take her for walks, give her treats, play with her until she's tired. Yet I AM the only one she bites, drawing blood & band-aids are needed!! I believe I've watched every online about biting, at least once, most of them more then once!! What do you do when the puppy's mindset is stuck on biting over, and over, and over... like she's gets more attacking as I'm correcting. I know using the cage or crate (we have both) is wrong to use as a punishment but we had to tonight. Cage had no toys or treats. Biting = the fun has stopped. If I'm not to use the cage, then what do i do? I've tried distracting her, then she's turn & bites me as soon as I move.

Adopted a pit/lab mix and he's in that phase right now he loves my two other girls but other dogs no(He was a starving sick stray when they found him so that may be why he only wants them) but now he's a huge healthy boy with the brain of a 2 month old puppy. We have come to his teen yrs and holy cow! My dad thinks he's insane he barks at EVERYBODY he sees steals food, knocks over trash and is very obnoxious when he wants attention.

My dog is a 6 year old Siberian husky and we have her crate out and she loves to go in there and take naps throughout the day. I still put her in there for about 20 to 30 mins at night while I shower just because and she still gets treats when I put her in there as like she were a puppy. Also she is not allowed on the couches unless we invite her up. there is only one bed in the house that she regularly gets up on and half the time it’s not occupied, thats my brother’s bed, currently he is away at school and we have a big blanket on the bed that catches all of her hair. When my brother comes back home she knows not to go get on the bed and will be just as happy laying on the floor.

10:15 I mean wow.., what dog wouldn’t get so excited by something like that… My puppy has started trying to ignore me at around 4.5 months - I am dreading the 7/8 month phase 😮

I started doing a treat mix for outdoor training so each treat is a suprise. Our pup is 4 mo the old and he was getting boerd quickly having the same treat during a trying session.

Can I ask a question? Do you have any tips on getting a puppy and kittens at the same time? I plan on using your training methods exactly the same way with my puppy but I'm worried she won't cooperate as much if she sees the cats maybe be a bit more free to run around than she would be

We have a one year old (supposedly, she was a stray at the pound) dog we adopted 2 months ago that goes nuts sometimes. She pulls hard, is wild outside, is suddenly getting too interested in the cats, does flying jump bites in the yard, she was fine up until almost 2 weeks ago. I am so overwhelmed at all of the constant training I have to do.

Oh man my 11 month old frenchy is just too much now! Any person that comes by he has to jump on. Any person that comes in he goes crazy and sometimes women that come in he jumps at the top of the couch and bites their hair. He does not listen. He was listening before and now only maybe listens if I have treats and tests me!

I’m really enjoying you’re videos! I know it’s a long shot to get an answer, but we’re getting a puppy. We’re going to keep her in the house and train her, but the long term goal is to have her outside a lot on her own to help protect our livestock. How do we get to the point of being able to leave her alone outside on our property?

Do you have lessons for training an adopted dog around 15 months old and you don't know what the dogs experiences have been prior to adoption. Seems that a lot of development (good and bad) may have occurred and how is it best to deal with it?

My issue is giving a treat or you to reward good behaviour and choices is not easy when three other dogs LOVE treats and toys too! They push in. Help!

How is it going after 1 year? My 10months old Mini bull terrier started 2 months ago barking at everything, also people sometimes...just the ones she doesn't recognize or feels as threatening. We have a trainer and make exercise but I wonder from where comes all this fear, she is a dog who grew up till 7 months by the breeder, have no issues with dogs. She just get scared and then starts barking and growl. With training is getting better but it feels like a long way...

The first two dogs I raised..... I never had to watch a single video. And never really had to “train” them much. Except of course potty training.... but even that wasn’t too much trouble. I taught them what I called “tricks”..... like paw, and sit and lay down and roll over..... but all the rest was all kinda just natural. Both Keeshond. Sooooo.... I didn’t think much when my adult daughter brought two Keeshond puppies home. Well.... two pups at the same time.... it’s a whole new ball game....lol. I think one pup was the “alpha” and the other the “runt” of the litter. I was so upset at the thought of needing to crate a dog. Luckily for me... they seem to love their crates.... thank goodness. The alpha pup almost seems to beg to go in it because it’s the only way for him to settle himself.... lol. I have have watched countless videos on puppy training these past two months. Lol. All I gotta say is thank goodness for KZread. My daughter said she would do all the cleaning up and pay for everything and ALL I had to do was train them since I trained the first two so well. Hahahahaha. At least she’s seeing the struggle ..... hahahaha. The pups are 5 mos old. Wish me luck!! Hahahaha. Love them ❤️

Lol…not funny of course but I can see that if people don’t put in the work…it might be a reason so many are rehomed…this channel helps with so many issues and is particularly good for the really bad days 😊

I got a puppy at 9 weeks old she was a puppy mill rescue she is now 3 months old and a terror cause of trauma getting a trainer cause of behavior problems

unfortunately, where I live in France, there are no puppy socializing or training classes..I'm on my own with a 5-month-old Jack Russell puppy..He's great - but very demanding and stubborn.
