Space Engineers is a voxel-based sandbox game set in space and on planets, developed and published by Czech independent developer Keen Software House. In 2013, the initial developmental release of the game joined the Steam early access program. During the following years of active development, Space Engineers sold over one million units. In total as of 2019 the game has sold over 3.5 million copies In May 2015, for approximately a year and a half, the game's source code was officially available and maintained by KSH to assist the modding community. On December 15, 2016, the game entered Beta and was later officially released on February 28, 2019.
The game is a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets. Players build space ships, space stations, planetary outposts of various sizes and uses, pilot ships and travel through space to explore planets and gather resources to survive.

I mean the Clang Drive is just plain better, however i still prefere grav drives due to scalability. For a large grid to be redicoulusly powerfull, you'd need to spam maybe 20 to 50 door mechanisms, whereas you could build like a really large gravity drive unit. Idk its just cooler imo to have this big section occupied by artivicial mass& grav generators. Its always been about the coolness factor of my ships for me and not how meta or efficient they are... And in a pinch, a well build grav drive can double as a railgun :D

Do the Merge Block Pump Drive next? For those who don't know: The idea is to use rotor offsets to keep a set of merge blocks from being able to make contact while exploiting the force the exert to align with each other. This force scales with ship mass, so by having a large mass (your ship) pulling itself towards a small mass (the drive shaft), there's a massive disparity in force applied between the two grids. The result is an impressive phantom impulse applied to your ship.

Klang and Gravity drives are a real help for big ships, even if you just use them to slow them down. For the gravity drive there exists a script that makes it possible to even replace gyros in your builds, so you get a ship that runs purely on the gravity drive concept. Great video.

I accidentally created a Clang drive way back. I think it was back when they first added pistons to the game... was a long time ago. I tried to use pistons to make sliding doors on the side of a ship. When I closed the doors, the ship would start moving, although it rotated some. I guess I had it pretty close to balanced. I could move it around, but I was constantly fighting it with my controls to try to make it go somewhat straight. Just thought it was more trouble than it was worth, so I scrapped it.

The gravity drive has an extreme theoretical maximum acceleration and is relatively simple to make. My personal favorite use for a gravity drive is for propelling projectiles. If you have a mod that causes everything to be affected by the artificial gravity of other grids then you can create a slab of armor that is accelerated without need for any resources other than iron which makes it cheaper for projectiles than anything else. And if you have a mod that removes the speed limit you can make a cheap projectile that can punch clean through even heavily armored ships
@matteodelgallo1983

A while ago, I did toy with iron plate forcefields, where you use 2 nested grav gens to keep a bunch of iron plates floating around the boundary. It was super laggy tho, idk if recent optimization helped with lag due to floating items

I've seen someone do this, where he put the rotor version on an axis, which allowed him to brake or reverse with the clang drive, or change his launch vector. He did this on an official server, and the results were scary to witness, due to the lack of shared inertia. His ship also couldn't be left adrift, as it would constantly move, so he always had to lock it down.

Another thing that few people will not about the clang drive is it's durability in combat scenarios. Not only is it a hangar door, it's also not prioritized by turrets like cabins or thrusters, meaning that a clang drive craft will stay moblie longer.
I remember way back in the day when gravity drives allowed you to exceed the speed limit. That was fun.

This kinda thing is EXACTLY what humans would do.
The complexity and fragility of SE's physics never ceases to amaze me. These drives are a literal example of blowing your own sail 🤣So simple an idea and construction, but there's no way they would work without the full function of the game's physics engine. The Clang Drive is definitely the more effective drive, but the name just doesn't quite have the same ring as "Gravity Drive." Gravity drive sounds like some advanced, powerful form of propulsion, Clang drive is just something you banged together in your garage over the weekend.

In kerbal, we have similar kracken drive. I did a bit of work on ladder based ones back on the day
It looks like the piston door drive is more “agile” because it can be engaged quicker but seems slower, while the hangar drive takes longer to engage it accelerates faster to higher speeds once engaged So the piston drive would be better on smaller ships while the hangar drive would be better for larger naturally slow ships like freighters and such because it seems more like a “long haul” type of drive
Here's a more refined look at CDs. Hanger Door Drive(HDD): Used for planetary escapement. Why? Slow to respond to input but pulls more Gs at 5G per CD. As for shifting the rotor displacement this does nothing. Piston Door Drive(PDD): Use for combat . Why? Has rapid response time but is overall weaker. Pulls 4G per CD. As for adjusting max extension. You can get away with about 0.3m into the door. Personally I set my pistons to 0.25m max extension. My setup is also one block shorter than what you have shown here as well. The more extension have does not effect the amount of Gs it pulls, it's overall constant. Rotor Merge Pulse Drive(RMPD): Oldest of the CDs, as we had rotors before pistons. Does not require to be in line with COM. Not all that compacted like the others and has more eradicate motion. CDs in general don't harm servers, it's the scripts that go along side them that are the problem. Then we get into Mass Shifters(MSD). These require program blocks which is where I draw the line on it being a CD. These use a different principle to function, of shifting the cargo around from one sub-grid to another. Extremely compact but at the cost of server performance. Disclaimer CDs are considered exploits by most of the community, I don't. Keen has stated that they won't patch it out and that it'll remain in the game, I'm paraphrasing there. The other application is launchers termed JOLT Cannons.

In actuality, harnessing the power of an exploit and using it to propel a ship is the most engineer thing you could do as a space engineer player. Imagine how much of an asspull nuclear reactors sounded like when they were first pitched. “Uh, so we just take this stick that gets really hot, and put it in water, and turn it into a steam turbine!”
