On view at Norman Rockwell Museum through October 26, 2014

Many noted American modernists have successfully traversed the worlds of fine art and illustration, embracing innovation while satisfying in unique and personal ways the needs and wants of a broad popular audience. "The Unknown Hopper: Edward Hopper" as Illustrator presents a unique and comprehensive study of the little-known twenty year illustration career of the realist master. Attitudes toward art and the crosscurrents of contemporary commercial society during the early to mid-twentieth century will be explored in this exhibition, which seeks to provide an integrated understanding of Hopper’s published and personal art.
“The Unknown Hopper” will present a comprehensive study of Edward Hopper’s nearly 20- year illustration career, featuring more than 50 original drawings and paintings by Hopper. These include important works from the Whitney Museum of American Art, through a bequest from the artist’s wife, Josephine N. Hopper; New Britain Museum of American Art; Mead Art Museum; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and other collections.

Thank you, professor. It was fascinating to listen to the voice of your knowledge.
Hopper was a genius and what a draftsman!
Beautifully narrated ...
Great !! Thank you Gail Levin
I hope they publish a book of his illustrations
This is just what I needed. I am working in synthesising Hopper with some European painters . All seem to have had some times in graphic arts and I needed someone to confirm that .. Not from a historical sense but a developmental one.
If you don’t have a nice word for her,,!! KEEP your thoughts to your self. 😘
Now I want to see this Prof. Gail Levin as painted by John Singer Sargent.
I'd like a book on his illustrations. I'm an illustrator.
❤️❤️❤️
super 1
Ha. Same here
Michael keaton can play a young Hopper.
Really good talk and examples shown. Please someone get the speaker some water.
It appears to me that Hopper didn't have any particular musical interests. Otherwise I would expect to see a Jukebox in The Nighthawks as well as the old song selector boxes on the counter.
