The unknown benefits of 6-piece fly rods - Leif Stävmo´s theory

Спорт

Six-piece fly rods have been immensely popular the last years, and you may have noticed that we have a large selection of 6-piece double hand fly rods like the NT8, LPX Chrome and Elevation T-Pac.
Of course they are great for travel, but Guideline product manager Leif Stävmo also has a theory on the added action qualities of 6-piece fly rods that's been sticking with him for a long time. Leif take us back 20 years in time when the classic 3-piece LeCie double hand rods were designed and a unison group of dedicated salmon anglers took these rods to their hearts.
Below links to the different ranges of Guideline six-piece fly rods, both double hand hand switch rods.

    Leif though I don’t fish with the Guideline brand, the 6-piece rods are so good today. As you say, today’s technology make them so much better.

    You are absolutly right, Leif! We love them 6-pcs rods as well. So much more comfortable to travel with. No need to go for a 4-pcs anymore.

    Totally agree that most of the time 6 piece rods feel better these days. In my case I find the 6 piece rods are just a little stiffer than the 4 piece counterparts, and this is good for me and my style of casting. I felt this way since the LXi series. The differences in any case are very subtle so both 4 and 6 piece are great! I use a thin layer of paraffin in the ferrules, this prevents wear and stuck parts and also avoids the pieces from coming loose (important with double hand rods), this way I do not need to check them that frequently. Using tape is another solution, I don't feel the need to use it anymore.

    Graphite, is already Stiff enough, Why would you want them any stiffer?! Of course there's always a Broomstick, if you like!! I've been a Rod Crafter, Fly tier, fishing guide, since 1976, and live in the home of Lamiglas, Sage and G. Loomis, and have fished all those great rods. Moreover, I can and do Catch a lot of Chinook, Coho Salmon and Winter Steelhead 3 to 4 Meters in front of my living room Window, so I can Speak from experience and great success!!!

    @@snagrbuster7343 Graphite can be stiff or flexible, this will depend specifically on the design of every rod. On the other hand there are many different variants of graphite and resins, which also makes things much more variable. I also fished early Sage and G.Loomis rods and like them of course, but as in any sport materials and design are constantly evolving. For those who prefer long casts in harsh conditions throwing big flies, a high performance stiffer rod will certainly help to make things easier. Also, every angler tempo is different, so not everybody will like the same kind of rod action. It is a bout the same in other sports like golf: if you're a long hitter you'll prefer a stiffer and more stable shaft, and if your swing is slow then you'll want a much more flexible shaft. Just a matter of preferences, I enjoy stiffer fly rods and stiffer golf shafts! Cheers!

    Sehr statisch dieser Diskurs, und die schöne Riten liegen auf dem Tisch...Schade, es hätte mehr her geben können!!

    Hi Leif, I flyfish for some 35 years, being 58 years now. I started with 2 piece flyrods and today, I mostly use 5-piece or 6-piece rods when travelling by plane. I have not yet broken a multi-piece rod, but landed some really nice salmon on them without any problems. They fish and cast well. I am really curious to test the new Guideline 6-piece travel rods.

    @@scandiboy666ls You have put so much time, knowlegde and effort in designing Guideline rods. Not only for the casting, but also as very nice fishing tools. A ten feet single hander as a 6, 7 and 8 wt in a five or six piece travel configuration would be a nice addition for 2022/23, what do you think about it?

    @@techmick1399 Thanks for the kind words and for the good suggestion! We do offer 10’ #7 & 8wt rods in 5-piece in the NT8 range, but most anglers prefer the 4- piece, as they split evenly in the middle when you take them down in half and also they do fit in quite a few travel bags, including our GL roller bag :-) //Leif

    I just bought a 6pc Elevation 6/7wt switch as I travel using public transport and often have to walk quite a long way to where I want to fish. I'm hoping that the convenience of a smaller tube isn't outweighed by a poor casting performance. I have avoided travel rods until now because of thier inherent stiffness and lack of feedback, but I have taken a chance on this, so let's see how it goes.

    Also please kindly remember that the President and blank Engineer for G.Loomis,, Steve Rajeff, was a World Champion Distance-Fly Caster, and he didn't use 5 or 6 piece rods, however in real life, Fishing Situations, we don't need to be a Distance fly caster!! Most of the time, anglers cast, right Past the Fish in front of them, so in that sense, we don't Have to have 2 piece rods, and I would Agree with you😄 But I still wish that, One of the rod Makers, would make some 15 ft. 10 and 11 Weight Spey Rods 😉

    Hi Leif should 6pc rods be taper together when fishing?

  • @scandiboy666ls

    @scandiboy666ls

    Hello Mike. There are no different “rules” for taping between 4- and 6-piece. Ferrule fits and overlap lengths are the same, so in general that depends on your casting style and how firm you secure the ferrules when you assemble the rod. If you find you have general problems with the ferrules coming apart, I’d suggest you tape them, regardless if they are 4- or 6-piece ;-). Cheers, //Leif
