The Universal Value of Nature

Does nature have a universal value? Can we consider natural capital as equivalent to financial capital?
This lecture gives a brief history of value, exploring the similarities between historical arguments as to why the value of housework and nature are not reflected either in theory or in the system of national accounts and GDP. It will explore the difficulties with putting a value on nature, for example trying to make meaningful estimates of what contribution water makes to our lives.

Thank you, for presenting this important information. My life has been centered around creative ways of supporting and sharing love of the Universal Values of Nature. As a child I dedicated a portion of my allowance, time, and passion to nature and animals. I am 60, and am proud to say I am still driven to expand this beloved respectful way of life. Along with your well explained concerns; my additional concern for nature's delicate future is-- all of the LOUD and invasive outdoor professional (and nonprofessional) music across the country, and globe! During the Spring and Summer, the ecosystems and animals are renewing, breeding, moving across terrains and natue-babies are everywhere. Outdoor music is disturbing, traffic is overwhelming, tons of garbage, and out-house refuse is generated. These actions "do not appear to be considerate," nor are they on the first step nor value Universally minded nature. This INDUSTRY must be held accountable for nature's success, they seem to escape all regulation. It would be a respectful choice for the music industry to be mindful of their behavior. Your lecture is magnificent! I hope to read or listen more of you. Much success to you in 2022.

Woman of your age. Seen things "unreal" become more valuable in place of nature. Kids rather visit Disney than a "big hole" such as Grand Canyon. Even our friends are curated & fake on social media. Strongly believe more time should be spent in nature. You can see truth & beauty. FB doesnt give me joy. We raised & released almost 6000 monarchs in my neighborhood via education, support, sharing. Pure happiness.

I'd rather visit a "big forest", than "big hole", ngl. In thw future we might have a lot less of the former and a lot more of the latter.

Michael Sandel has been saying the same from Harvard for the last decade: _“We have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society.”_

Nature just IS and we are a dependent part of it. That's what we need to understand not some quasi-religious "value". In capitalism value is in conflict with species survival as its value system is all about profit. We can't resolve the present danger of species extinction without ending capitalism. This talk has got it arsewise and this kind of thinking is part of the problem.
