Warning: to rent an OV Fiets, you need a personalised OV Chipkaart. And you need a Dutch bank account for that.

    I was in Amsterdam for a weekend some years ago, while I was working in the UK. I was unaware of the bicycle paths, and stepped into a bicycle path. I almost collided with a bicycle, but he managed to stop just in time. It does take some getting used to.

    I have just cycled across the Netherlands from Drenthe to Hoek van Holland. You said anyone with a travel card ovchipkaart? Only Dutch citizens with a residence and Dutch bank account can get these. I parked my bike overnight in fietsenstalling in Apeldoorn and Haarlem. The first had an arrangement with my hotel and the Haarlem one charged me just €0.50 but I had to pay with my debit card. It is shocking how good the Dutch fietspadden are compared with any other country. Even minor country lanes have immaculately paved paths with white lines and lighting.

    5:12 quick English subtitle correction. "accepted" means allowed/approved. "Excepted" may not even be a word, I'm not sure, but it'd be exclusion: 'they work every day except Sunday'. Could say 'this is a one-way road for vehicles, but bicycles are the exception'.

  • @OntarioTrafficMan

    @OntarioTrafficMan

    Ah dat is wel een lastige vraag. Ik zou aanraden om bij de bar te zitten in een café of kroeg en jezelf voor te stellen aan de mensen die naast je zitten. Daar heb je de beste kans om andere mensen te vinden die ook graag met vreemden praten. Je kunt ook meedoen aan een evenement. In het algemeen spreken mensen graag met anderen als ze geen haast hebben. Ik zou bijvoorbeeld dus niet aanraden om tijdens de spits met anderen in de trein te praten, en nooit in de stiltecoupé.

    Misschien toch maar je verlegenheid aan de kant zetten en een praatje maken. Wat kan er gebeuren? Heel veel succes bij de volgende poging!

    You are correct, but in most fietsenstallingen, there is a check in-check out system with 2 barcodes: 1 BC is on your bike, the other is on a plastic card, which you take with you. Both barcodes are scanned when entry and exit, it they do not match. The cyclist is a thief.
