It's about life. Growing up. Growing out. Growing alone. Growing old.
One of Kirks best solos of his life. It compliments the song perfectly and isn’t just there as a “look at me, a solo!” type thing. I believe he’s said this is one of the solos he’s most proud of.

The irony, his original solo was horrible. They told him it was rubbish and then he cranks this beauty out.

@@TheSWCantina The original solo was one he tried spontaneously with no work put into it. I think that’s the one on “A year and a half in the life of Metallica” where everyone cringes at what he’s doing. There’s a couple of very small hints at what the solo would become, but mostly it was soooo bad. Lars cringing in the background was the funniest thing. I remember Bob Rock saying that’s what happens when a guitarist doesn’t do their homework. Once Kirk finally put the time into the solo that it needed, he cranked out this gem. It seems like Bob genuinely pushed him like no other producer had before, to be better. Also notice it’s one of his solos with very little to no wah pedal in it. That’s always my main criticism of Kirk, the running joke that he has Wah pedals strapped to the bottom of his sneakers.

Bob Rock is the guy that is responcible for this specific solo. He pushed Kirk over his limits in that studio that day. 🤘
The Unforgiven I, II, III is a beautifully written story that divulges into a timeline of events, talking about James Hetfield's struggle with alcohol addiction, his subsequent battle with alcohol addiction, not being able to forgive his mom and dad who left him at a young age.

What a noob! (lol I was 12 so was pretty close). I learned to play this (the easy parts anyways) from a tab book for beginner guitarists before I even heard it. When I finally did I was like whoa.

Boom she's back!
Hetfield is definitely one of the more interesting lyricists in metal. It helps to know his life story to connect the dots sometimes but other than that, the choice of his topics, his metaphors, phraseology and points of attack make his poetry very enjoyable and thought provoking

Welcome back! Just diving back in without missing a beat. Great reaction, spot on analysis. So many people live for the approval of others that they end up unfulfilled. As a side note, I once heard it said as we grow and mature, we trade possibility for experience. In pondering this, I've come to realize that, since we can't avoid the trade of possibility, we should make sure that the trade is worth it.
Hey, I've missed your face! I couldn't click fast enough when I saw this notification pop up 😆
Glad your back ! 🤘🔥🎸

Good see you back. Been a while
Welcome back, my dear! 🙏🏻❤ I think Metallica surprises people when they decide to open up to what they are, musical therapy. I'm in my 60s and just recently came to this awakening about the band. Very healing. Like a highly tuned machine, Metallica is like going for a long drive, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, curves and close calls. It's a lot like life and we do it without too much worry. When you listen to music, it's the same kind of meditative vibes. Keep reacting. : )
Great to see you again, love to see your reactions and analysis.
holy shit - we've been blessed with the return of some top shelf Slanzzy metal reactions! glad to see it!
finally slanzzy is back! a dream of a woman =)
The story behind 'The Unforgiven' traces back to James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) of Metallica, who wrote this about his parents... both he and Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) came from physically abusive & broken homes. A lot of parents don't comprehend the damage they inflict on their children while claiming to 'love' them. James had written a pretty harsh song called "Dyers' Eve" in 1988, where he ripped at his parents as an adult for what he went through as a child. James came from a conservative Christian family... they believed in Christian Science, where medicine and doctors were not necessary - only "God" would heal through belief and prayers. As a child James was not allowed to attend certain classes in school because of his parents' beliefs... and that made him an outcast. His home life was worse - abuse, punishments for misbehaving... he learned to stay quiet and take everything in silence, hoping that it would pass. His parents divorced, and his father disappeared... he was left at home w/ his sister, whom he would always get into fights with... His mom was unable to cope. She was soon diagnosed w/ cancer and refused treatment, clinging to her beliefs that "God" would heal her... She died when James was just a young teen. With both parents gone, James and his sister were handed over to an older brother, his sister was kicked out for acting up... James himself gladly left at 18 to become a musician... His experience w/ going out into the world was traumatic, and he fell into drinking at an early age. That was basically the story of his upbringing... it scarred him to this very day - he recently ended up in rehab again and filed for divorce from his wife. No money, fame, hobbies or distractions could heal what he had experienced. James finally met Lars Ulrich, an aspiring drummer in 1981... and Lars told him he could get a demo on a friend's indie record label released, and gave the band name 'Metallica' from a fanzine editor. Ron McGovney was Hetfield's roommate and he joined Metallica on bass... a local musician Dave Mustaine joined on guitar. That was the first Metallica, and they started playing gigs in L.A. in 1982. Hoping to improve the band, Metallica opted to relocate to San Francisco so that bassist Cliff Burton would join. Unfortunately, Dave Mustaine was becoming increasingly violent on drugs and alcohol, and he was fired just before they recorded their first album "Kill 'em all" in 1983 in New York... Kirk Hammett joined on lead guitar and played on that record. On tour, James was prone to drinking in excess and destroying hotel and dressing rooms. He had broken his arm skateboarding in 1986 and had to perform in a sling while a guitar tech played his parts. In 1986, Metallica were involved in a tour bus accident in Sweden and Cliff Burton was killed... James was re-traumatized by that loss, seeing a close friend die... and alcohol was the only way to cope. When he recorded Metallica's 4th album 'And justice for all" in 1988, James' lyrics were just frenzied and violent - every song was just angry and cynical... many Metallica fans felt the way he did. He admitted that he would resort to abusive behavior to either keep people at bay or demand that they not leave him. Over the years, James softened his outlook, especially for his late mom... he did write 'The God that failed' in 1991 about her beliefs that took her away from him... He wrote the song 'Until it sleeps' in 1996 about her battle w/ cancer... and the country song 'Mama said' in her memory. Dave Mustaine, who went on to form Megadeth after being fired from Metallica, had his own battles w/ drug and alcohol abuse... he also came from an abusive & broken home... his dad spent his time stalking his mom and sisters, and they would have to relocate because there was no "restraining order" to protect them, growing up. His dad eventually died of an aneurysm... his mom became a Jehovah's witness... Fed up, Dave left home at 15 and became a pot dealer in L.A. and got his guitar and record collection from the trade. After his mom died in the 90's, Dave wrote a powerful song - 'A tout le monde' about dying and leaving behind loved ones.

Welcome back! Glad you returned and also returned with some Metallica. Great song. All three Unforgiven songs are incredible. I would give the other 2 a listen as well.
Pleased to see you back. Hope you're well. One of my favorite tracks by them. Very open to interpretation to each listener. I've always distilled it to essentially "live and learn." Through the ups and downs of life you have to take what you can from each experience and then choose how to proceed. Ideally moving forward towards greater levels of wisdom.
I agree with your opinion of the title, its so easy to place blame upon others for the struggles of life but no one chose this anymore than you or I did. I enjoy hearing your perspective as it is often similar to my own whilst being different enough to provide further contextual insights or realizations I had missed. I hope you are well in your personal life and I look forward to your next video whenever it may come.
Great to see you back doing reactions. You have been missed.
So everyone is hitting you with the "welcome back"...I ask "where the hell you been?" 😆 I wasn't the biggest fan of this song when it came out, 30+ years ago, but it has definitely grown on me over the years. Your interpretation of it is as good as can be, it hits people differently to be sure. Thanks for posting this. Oh yeah...Welcome back.

Btw, if you're interested, I'd love to see you check out the hard rock band The Warning. Hey nice to see you come back, I was just checking yesterday if you made anything new. Hope you make more content cause honestly love your appreciation for music as well as your understanding too. But if I could suggest something that you may like, you should give "I'll Be There For You" by Bon Jovi a listen is a pretty sweet song! I got so many suggestions that I think you would enjoy. Anyways welcome back!
What I love about Mettalca is that they either melt your face off with the first note or come in with a beautiful soulful intro.
It's been a hot minute! Nice to see you back ❤️ I hope all has been well with you ❤️❤️
I was afraid you’d never be back…I love the way you just launch into the song…no interruptions…and the pictures of the band throughout is really cool..you have such a neat vibe…love it!
Love the not pausing during the song or talking over it much....appreciate you for that. Personal song for James about his childhood. I am not much of a fan of Metallica after Cliff passed, but to each their own. The first 3 albums were fantastic. Looking forward to more content. And also thanks for no fake eyelashes. Huge bonus points for that..😋
Hi, Slanzzy. I am so glad that you are back! I hope you are still writing original songs and creating original music. You are very talented, and I hope you share some new ones on your channel.
Welcome back! Metallica! Woo Hoo!
The producer of this album was able to convince the band to switch things up......make the verse go hard and then make the chorus quiet and subdued. Usually it's the other way around. This song means so much to so many people, including myself.
Glad you covered this. Been a while. But the underlying theme is child abuse, specifically emotional/psychological abuse, not just normal growing pains and teen angst, btw. For people like me, this is about literally not forgiving someone for the horrible abuse they put you through while you were growing up. Shit like telling you how worthless you are, and how all the dreams you have are pointless because you will never accomplish them, for example. That's why I relate to it. I suffered that to intense levels in my childhood (and not just emotional/psychological abuse). Don't get me wrong, on some level it's great if you can't actually relate to this song on the level presented, because that means you had a reasonably healthy upbringing. I envy that. James Hetfield, and myself, and many others did not though. It was baaad. That's why I cry whenever I hear this song. Even decades later.

I feel this song deeply. I've been through a little of what James wrote about. I don't know what to do. My parents will never understand what they did to me or my siblings. Incredibly set in their beliefs. I have a great relationship with them on the surface, there's just a lot that cannot be talked about, but it lurks under the surface. I'm 35 now, and I've hit a wall. I feel like I was doing well for a while, and now it's all coming undone, coming back to bite me because I tried to pretend to be fine. My parents are very alternative. I was homeschooled, and while my parents mostly meant well, they isolated us, they projected all of their issues onto us, and they were quite abusive. My father used to hold my face into my own piss until I thought I was going to die when I was a child when I accidentally wet the bed for example. I was exposed to a lot of strange people and drug use. My father is an extremely jealous man and treated me as if I was a rival male trying to get with my mother. By far the worst part was not learning social interaction and then suddenly being on my own at 16 or 17. I didn't have a chance against a bunch of streetwise people from the hood. Most people thought I was mentally handicapped, despite having an IQ way above average. I wound up making a ton of bad choices. It scares me when I see them same thing happen to James Hetfield. He's had every success he could have dreamed of, and his demons continue to haunt him to this day. There really is no magic pill that can undo childhood trauma. As adults we have are a little tougher and can take a bit of bad stuff and move on, but as a child you don't even understand it. You think it's normal. I always wondered why I was born on thos body as a child. I couldn't understand why I was me, and it was something I thought about every day. I still do.
"So I dub thee unforgiven" This is one of Metallica's swan songs.
Good to see you back! I’ve got the same takeaway from the song thematically. I think it would be cool to do Unforgiven II to see how their songwriting changes, along with James singing. This album is their turning point from thrash to more hard rock/heavy metal
Welcome back! Don’t have time to watch this yet, but saw you were back and had to say hello! Glad you’re back. 🙂

Glad that you are back! As a Metallica fan for 30 years, I found it very interesting to see others discovering Metallica song that I know for a long time. They make me rediscover songs I already know!
Nice to see you're back! Hopefully we can get song more of your original songs, I always liked those.
The intro lead to this song was the first riff I ever learned. To answer your question about the guitar Kirk is playing, I'm pretty sure it's the ESP KH-1 "Skully" on this album.
So great to see you back. It's been a while. This is a great song. One of the first ones I learned to play off the Black Album on my guitar and bass.
I really enjoy her videos. She seems always so immersed in the song. Sometimes it's just a short pause between two nods, or the blinking of the eyes that lasts half a second longer than usual, that tells you when something suddenly emerged in her consciousness. You know then and from her general demeanor that she's not faking a reaction. It's awesome to watch!
Brilliant interpretation; your reaction brought the biggest smile to my face. Can't wait to see what you do next; welcome back!
What a nice surprise! Welcome back! Always enjoy your deep perspective. May I suggest "Mama Said" from Metallica. It's a very personal song from James Hetfield. ❤🤘
While universal to so many lives and situations growing up, but specifically this was singer (James) lashing back at his parents who controlled his life forcing religion onto him, and stifling his sense of self identity and ability to think for himself - only to have his father leave unceremoniously from the family and his (now) single mother of 2 died a few years later when James was 16. While James likely doesn't have anything against God, he does loathe that it and conformity was forced on him indiscriminately. I had just started watching reaction videos 2 years ago (during the 2020 lockdowns with nothing better to do), and eventually grew to love so many of the channels. Yours was the 2nd channel I ever found; the first by accident "Rap fan listens to Metallica for first time". Then I did a query to see if any other reactors were listening to Metallica for first time - and that's how I stumbled on your channel and enjoyed your videos. Then you disappeared. Welcome back.
Glad to see you're back. Really missed your reactions. Looking forward to your new reactions 🙂
