He was the KING
Seeing Big Red, Superhorse, framed against the lights at the end as he led all by himself was so haunting and so beautiful. Thank you Secretariat for showing us a bit of Pegasus but earth-bound (barely). You will always be a legend.
He went out as he should have! I've never before seen this race and I'm sitting here 51 years after the fact and sobbing as I did watching him win the Triple Crown when I was 31.
He comes off that last turn blowing steam from his nose like an F22 making a perfect turn at full speed.
My mom surprised me by taking me to see Secretariat at Claiborne Farm, after he retired. The groom took him out so we could get close to him and take pictures. It was the best surprise I ever had!!

That big engine was on full display with the cold air making his breath visible. GOAT!
The GREATEST horse EVER! RIP big red!
One of my fondest memories. I was at that race. To be able to see that magnificent racehorse win it’s final race. After all these years, I still tear up watching Secretariat race.

I've never seen a horse race so close to the rail as Secretariat. It's like he knew that was the fastest line.
Wow! Never knew he ran on grass but my lord this horse is truly the GOAT!

He beat the top grass horse in North America, Tentam, in the Man O' War Stakes on the turf and I believe won in record time. Secretariat toyed with Tentam like a cat with a mouse. Ron Turcotte, who should know, said Secretariat was better on the grass than he was on the dirt.

Secretariat could and would run on anything, he was a once in a lifetime kind of Horse, and if I live for another 70 years, I still won't see another like Big Red. He was the best of all time, glad he came along during our lifetime, we were graced with the privilege of watching him run, remember it like it was yesterday, it will never be replicated.
When Secretariat settled in behind Kennedy Road, it reminded me of a cat playing with a mouse before deciding to end things. Just as in the Preakness once Secretariat decided to go, the race was quickly over. His top end speed was just so much faster than the rest of the field. The greatest racehorse of all time. STILL holds all three triple crown race records 51 years later. Incredible.

I don't know about that. The Great Sham was just as fast. He busted out his two front teeth coming out of the gate at the derby and ran the entire race with swollen nasal passages from the blow and Secretariat couldn't shake him. I believe The Great Sham would have beaten him. Unfortunately, we will never know how the Belmont would have turned out if Sham had not have been running with a hairline fracture in his left front lower leg. You can actually see his legs splay just a fraction of a second before Secretariat pulled away. He was every bit as good as Secretariat. Just bad luck.

@@JackelinHydewhat excuse do you have for Sham in the Preakness? Three races, three losses. Fractured a leg trying to push Secretariat at Belmont. I understand how good the stats are for Sham. I’ve always found it interesting that the two largest hearts ever measured in horses were Secretariat followed by Sham. Just the way they finished all three races against each other. By any measure, I just can’t see how Sham was every bit as good as Secretariat. Three races three loses doesn’t equate to “every bit as good”.

@JackelinHyde Sorry, I love Sham. He was a great horse, and a worthy opponent. But I have never bought the bit about the hairline fracture in the Belmont. Based on how those two were running, Sham would not have finished the race and in fact would probably have pulled a Barbaro (crosses self) if anything had cracked during that stretch run. Sham had great early speed, and he also surpassed Northern Dancer's 9-year record in the Derby. I think Team Sham formulated a strategy based on the horses' performance in the Preakness, figuring that the smaller the field, the more likely Secretariat was to go to the front immediately and burn himself out (cf Smarty Jones in the Belmont, where Jerry Bailey and Russell Baze sacrificed their own horses to deny Smarty the Triple Crown) (Yes. I'm still bitter. I lost 20 bucks!). Laffit Pincay is clearly holding Sham's head during the stretch duel, while Turcotte has been ordered to let his steed decide how he wants to run. When Secretariat simply left Sham instead of collapsing, Pincay implemented part B of the plan, feign injury and let Sham valiantly finish last. That preserved Sham's value as a stud. What they hadn't counted on was the massive, literal mutant engine pounding inside Big Red's oversized chest. Both Sham and Secretariat were maternal grandson of Princequillo, who brought the largest of the large X Factor hearts to America. That day at the Belmont, the two largest thoroughbred hearts on record went beat to beat, and the 22 pounder won over the 18 pounder.
Secretariat had the most beautiful stride I've ever seen.

At the beginning it was like he's thinking, "This is a track?! I should be eating this track!" Then as he went by the stands he seemed to get his footing and say, "Yeah, ok, I guess I can run on this!" The stride suddenly lengthened. He went from looking like a horse running to looking like one leaping again and again and again, Superman swooping low across the turf. "Well sorry... what did they say your name was...?! Oh right! Kennedy Road. Byeeeee!" *VOOM* Kudos for the music choice and editing. As if this race needed any more drama, with Ron projecting himself into Eddie Maple's saddle and Arcaro's expert, unabashed fandom of the big red locomotive barreling down the stretch, vanishing into silhouette against the lights, the ecstatic crowd, the epic race call... a fitting end to SecretariGOAT's career!

This race took place 50 years ago on October 28, 1973. I wasn't physically there - likely out with my own horse I had at the time. Even though I lived a couple of miles, if that, from the track, I remember the race. Here we are, 50 years later - half a century !!! Where did ALL the time go ?! Greatest Horse of All Time
That stride...it was like he was gliding over the track once the afterburners turned on......💖💖 My Spirit Horse. I have a rose from his grave that the guide gave to me and I have preserved under glass. I wept unabashedly at his grave. He came to me when my mother was in hospice and he's never left my heart...watching him always brings me to tears. He is transcendent...🌠
I remember watching Big Red winning this race…watched it on TV with my Dad…we were screaming and cheering him on….love Secretariat❤
Can’t beat that horse! Amazing!
He looks like a steam locomotive huffin and chuffin coming down the home stretch. Just smoked the rest of the field.
Can you imagine the oxygen and endorphin high Big Red must have gotten while running like that?! The big, fast, forceful exhalations you can see in this video as he barrels down the stretch like a locomotive... wondrous to behold!🎉❤
How Secretariat won this race is exactly how it should have been. Just running away from everyone and winning by a mile. Just incredible! The best and most exciting race horse that ever was, and probably ever will be.
Kicked it into another gear that only he had. ❤

Legend
This horse was literally a freak of nature. After he passed away in 1989 due to a hoof infection, they examined him and his heart was 21lbs. The average weight is 8 to 9lbs. Secretariats heart was more than twice the size of a comparable horse. That explains why he could run so fast for so long.

What a lovely post, and the memories you have of your own horse are obviously very warm. Nice to see. 💖
I love that they didn't play it safe and retire him after the Belmont to stud. They let him finish out his career. That horse had to run.
I urge fans of Big Red to read Andy Beyer’s 1975 “Picking Winners” to learn the fundamentals behind speed ratings & track variants. Later in the book Andy devotes a chapter to his work going back to ‘73 and constructing figs for Secretariat overall and the Belmont in particular. The grounding in the mathematical concepts helps you see as Andy did just how remarkable Big Red really was.
Dirt. Turf. Didnt matter
Folks, this was his first time racing on grass. And, he was doibg it under a skilled but unfamiliar jockey. Against older horses. Just incredible!

That was why I said he must have been thinking, "I should be eating this track!"😅
If memory serves, he ran this race at a record 2:24 flat also, just like in the Belmont. Another milestone record as yet unbroken.
My question is, how did he…DO that? How can a horse push another HARD for the entirety of a race and when the horse WHO HAS BEEN RUNNING JUST AS FAST AS HE DID fades, and he keeps going, like…how is that possible? I’ve never deigned to watch this race before, but now I know why people call him the GOAT…I surely will to, from now on.

Apparently Kennedy Road’s jockey and trainer didn’t get the memo after the Belmont. They tried to run Big Red into the ground and like Sham, they run over instead.
The best that ever was.
Sham should have been around in another era he deserved to be a great. But it is what it is and it WAS secretariat's era
Kennedy Road’s jockey: hey, we’re winning…. Eddy Maple: I think I’ll push the go button….. NOW.
When I see things like this I wonder how phar lap secretariat and sea biscuit would have gone against each other
You could go around again and his lead would be bigger. Without question the greatest to ever look through a bridal. 1:09 in the Belmont and was just getting warmed up.
I'll bet half way down the back straight , the jockey had a nice cup of Joe and a few puffs on his ceegar, such was the brilliance and greatness and ease of Secretariat? Maybe half a doughnut too...dunked in the coffee ? Unbelievable horse !
Hey, we're keeping pace with Secretariat......then the back stretch afterburners turn on.....uh oh.
ran Canadian champion Kennedy Road ragged, just total domination from the world's greatest racehorse

I don’t really think Kennedy Road stood a chance anyway, but that was a bad race strategy on his part, especially after watching what Secretariat did to Sham and the rest of the field in the Belmont, when Pincay took off with that crazy pace, trying to run him into the ground. Secretariat only ran a couple of races on turf but there was no reason to think he couldn’t handle the track.
How many lengths ahead?
Why add background music to this? It's a distraction.
Like a bunch of 6 cyl fords and Chevys racing against a Ferrari ....big red, the G.O.A.T.

NOT the greatest horse ever, even though he was magnificent, the greatest has to go to FRANKEL, the speed could never be matched in his 14 undefeated races, I will NEVER EVER forget what I would witness at Newmarket in the 2.000 Guineas, Frankel was 15 lengths clear of the field which was full of group 1 winners and ABSOLUTELY coasted home in a canter, then came the phenomenal Queen Anne at Royal Ascot, 11 lengths, and many more races, the Frankel Breedings have since been ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
