Another note on their name change: They were very transparent during that process, and did a great job engaging with their audience throughout. They even had some public discussions with experts on indigenous cultures. Then in the midst of all this news broke about the war in Ukraine, and the band decided to change their name and wrap up further discussion. Saying basically: as important as this is to us and our fans, the conflict puts their issue into perspective. So just change the name and move on. IIRC they donated proceeds from their rebranded merch to organizations trying to help people in Ukraine.

I think they didn't only choose Nico because of the audition. Nico was in a german band called "To the rats and wolves" which had a similar sound and splitted up just before Sushi left. Both bands even toured together, so they knew each other before.

The name change was done very well, most importantly because it was genuine and they were open about it. It helps that they'd made some vlogs so we were used to them being them, no fake image or overdone performance, updating us from "we got pointed out this is bad" through "we're investigating and making up our minds" to "this namechange is happening because...". I like all sorts of music and lots of different metal, but there is a big push against having fun like Electric Callboy in so much of the heavier or more hardcore music genres. That's the reason why I started listening to Babymetal when their songs became more and more fleshed out. They are really fun, yet the metal band backing them is just cracked. I was first introduced to Electric Callboy Aug 2020. A friend of mine wouldn't stop watching the Hypa Hypa video while on a group trip. The video was funny but I was still on the fence. That same friend then went on to show me some of their older videos for Crystals, McThunder and a few more. I was still on the fence until I watched Hate/Love and Nico's acoustic version of Prism. Those two songs sealed it for me. I love the new album, blogs and videos. I love that they have majority control of their music videos since Pascal and his brother are the directors and producers on most if not all their music videos. I wish Nico a full recovery and looking foward to them coming to the US for a tour.

Should note Sushi went on to do a band called Ghostkid including an album and it's freakin amazing. Saying that though you can definitely see why they departed because it's definitely a different direction from what Electric Callboy did. Like Ghostkid's Debut Album definitely tapped into the darker side of things we got a taste of on Crystals & The Scene where as Electric Callboy decided to go into the more Party/ Comedy side that was also seen on it. Both brilliant albums from both bands though.

I am austrian so I guess I have a bit of a different perspective towards the band. I remember when I started paying more attention to music and festivals they were always part of the line up of like Metal festivals in my area but I never really got into their music back then and honestly kinda forgot about them until hypa hypa came out. I think initially in the german speaking countries the song got a bit of a push because there is a pretty "famous" song called Hyper Hyper by German electronic musician scooter that is regarded as very cringe but also kind of a fun thing to listen to. Initially I thought it was a cover of that song and instantly clicked on the video. I never expected them to blow up this big. Actually it's not just the title 'Hypa Hypa'. The whole song is a reference to Scooter. The intro beat and the "döp döp döp" part are an obvious reference to Scooter's 'Maria'. I'm from germany and first time I saw them live was in 2016 on a free Open Air Festival. It was awesome to see them blowing up with their new singer and to see international reactions on hypa hypa etc. Germans just flooded those reaction channels :D

To me one of the craziest thing about them is that they played a massive (as in 200,000+ people) EDM festival in Germany this and the crowd went absolutely wild. I know there are still some people who would consider even a keyboard in metal borderline offensive in most cases, but I would have never expected that to work half as well as it did. 10:58 Funny you put it that way with the "boyband-kindof vocals", because that was exactly what I used to dislike about them when Sushi was doing vocals, the heavy bits were nice, the cleans sounded like they were aimed at 14-year-old girls 😅

I was introduced to the band by TanktheTech's reaction of Pump It. This was where I realized that rock and metal reaction/essay channels are absolutely a huge driving force for the popularity and spread of the genres. Electric Callboy is now one of my favorite modern bands of any genre. They are so wholly unique and refreshing, and I'm really happy they're finding mainstream success now, and it really is all thanks to the hype around Hypa Hypa, their consistency in quality of audio and video, and of course the amazing, amazing folks on KZread (channels and viewers).

Great video! was really impressed by the editing, more dynamic in a sense compared even to some more recent of your content. And your message at the end was important. I played in black and death metal bands for almost 20 years as vocalist. when my last band was a bunch of great moments to remember in 2019, in december i started to compose alone as a beatmaker. 3 years later, i composed about 500 tracks, and i was on soundcloud, a year ago i started using distrokid, to post more advenced stuff, at least better than my first material. and according to the spotifiy stats, my most listened songs, where miles away from beatmaking, i composed some tracks in a "space ambient" style, and i never thought i would have more success with 15 minutes soundsacpes completly in an , astronomy, mystical and philosophical trip, than my more punchy stuff. and that said your right Finn. It's never too late!

ELECTRIC CALLBOY from CASTROP-RAUXEL, Germany!! 😍 It's about 300 miles from my hometown, so excited to see them on your channel! 🤘🏼 I've listened to them since 2012ish and in my opinion, as much as I liked Sushi, the separation was the best decision ever, musically. And We got the moves is also my favourite song by them now!

I like their old music better. I´m happy for them that they blew up on the internet. I've listened to them for ~10 years now and saw them life multiple times. Sadly the new songs beside "HypaHypa" and "We got the moves" just didn´t catch me and especially after seeing them life 2 months ago I have to say that for me they changed in a bad direction. Well...whatever. Bands come and go and fans come and go. We all change. That´s life. I hope they keep beeing happy and do whatever they wanna do.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the "fun" thing. So much of metal has become "bearded dudes djenting in a colored room" as you put it, or djenting in a warehouse. It got boring, frankly. Electric Callboy also understands the power of music videos and puts a lot of effort into them. You can draw a lot of parallels between Electric Callboy and Blink-182 back in the late 90's.

Fun Fact: They can also work extremely well spontaneously without much effort at all - the song Castrop X Spandau (featuring Kalle Koschinski) was written in a single day and they made the music video for that song the very next day. All was done within 48 hours...and it is really good.

I know a lot of people here in Brazil that know EC since Bury me in Vegas, and that was really a surprise the first time that I played it with my band in an event around 2014, and a lot of people sang Muffin Purper-Gurk with me. Maybe now we can dream with a world tour where they come here to Brazil. 🤗

Small note on what Finn mentioned about "they become famous only after years of being a band", a similar story is with Infected Rain (nowdays they sign up with Napalm Records). But with Hypa, Hypa they put a song in my ear that stuck for a long time (German word for this: Ohrwurm - literal english translation: ear worm). Good to see that we can look past this desaster and notice that it actually didn't matter, neither for them nor the Metal Scene.
