The Understated Genius of Optimus Prime's Character (Transformers: Prime)

Ойын-сауық

Optimus in TF:P gets a bad rap. As a fan of this show and this iteration of the character (Though G1 Optimus Prime is still my #1), I thought I'd break down these arguments.
This one is a little late, sorry about that. I also genuinely don't know what's wrong with the gameplay footage, especially since I had little to no stuttering while I was actually playing. Nonetheless, with this one and the Batman video, I'm thinking of figuring out an alternate form of background footage going forward. I may still use gameplay in some videos (probably when I get a better rig and/or play lower-end games).

Hes given the full wisdom of the primes. He prolly realizes that this is the best way to go about war aswell honestly. We do the same here in earth in alot of ways. Its a similar concept in bhuddism where you gotta wish good fortune even upon your enemies. Optimus Prime is a cybertronian religous leader, and reminds me alot of the Buddha. Hes basically the cybertronian buddha. Everything from his cadence, demeneanor, and even his backstory, reminds me of those jakatha tales from sunday school.

We also do have to factor in that most of the atrocities committed by the Decepticons were ordered out by Megatron. Starscream isn't innocent, but he's far from the worst, and showed willingness to end the war (Albeit only if Optimus would bow to him)

This series does its characters justice. I think the reason that it’s called Transformers: Prime isn’t because Optimus is the main character, but because he’s at the core of its themes. He’s the one that each of the heroes strives to emulate. While it might have been nice to see this version of Optimus accept that he had to kill his foe for the greater good, it really warms my heart to see the ending of the series. Megatron, even after death, was finally able to change his mind. Not just because of Unicron’s torment, but because of Optimus’ centuries of mercy and belief in him. While Optimus did learn to put his feelings aside and withhold mercy when needed, I’m so glad that his long-suffering faith in his old friend was rewarded. Sometimes, every now and then, amazing things can happen when we give people more than they deserve.

I have my...opinions on the ending, but I definitely agree that this show is one of the best. It elevated the Transformers to actual characters, not just archetypes (though I do still love G1 despite its cheesy nature). Every character is incredibly three-dimensional, even the villains, which makes it easy to love the whole cast. Well, almost the whole cast.

I guess there's a BIG difference between a literal kid who only knows about computers than a comrade in arms who fights at your side. The autobots are soldiers who are prepared to give their lives in war, while Raf is a boy who got involved in a war that he is not a part of just to help them. Optimus must feel more guilt in involving an innocent child in his own war against Megatron and cannot forgive Megatron for crossing that line.

He's a sassy but down to earth, no-nonsense leader who constantly doubts his worthiness to be a prime. Sure he also broods and hides his fears from his comrades but he never lacks personality like wth? In Exiles when he arrives on Velocitron and attends the Speedia race, he gets his only ex-seeker autobot to fly over the finish line and upstage the winner of the race just to piss off one of Velocitron's leaders 😂 I wouldn't call that not having a personality.

People who say this Optimus is boring are out of their minds honestly. Even as a kid I found him super compelling, and liked how much more reserved he was compared to other incarnations. My first TF series were the Unicron trilogy where Prime’s a lot more outspoken and exaggerated, especially in Energon, which is fine but I don’t think that character would fit TFP. His stoic nature here also worked well as he was clearly the role model of the Autobots. He did have a lot of more humanizing touches to him to make him relatable too, such as how he’d often have more personal conversations away from the group like an actual leader, which I feel get very overlooked. TFP Optimus might not party, but that doesn’t mean he’s a completely antisocial shell of a leader, just an aged one who was more willing to let the younger members of the team do their thing without him needing to oversee their every action.

Bayverse is when a good person has had enough of your shit and failures to change every time he gave a chance for you to. He got to that point because his faith in his foes changing cost him Jazz, Ironhide, and Ratchet at the hands of humans. He is the definitive version of this character and lets be honest. No other prime in various of countinuities can compete to this prime. Well exept of course g1 prime. Over all great character. We really see he went through literal war. He is kind and good warior. Its the perfect balance between g1 father prime and more violante bayverse prime. He trully earned the title of prime and in the eyes of fans including me he won’t be forgotten.

I do myself feel that Season 3 had a lot more to offer and as someone who actually thinks season three is the second best season, I wouldve really have liked to have seen more of Wheeljack and Ulrtra Magnus' relationship get explored, plant even more seeds for Knockouts eventual face turn. Tho I will say Optimus being the one to kill Megatron is something that I thought years back when I first saw this show.

Moreso than that, it's about how far you're willing to hold on to your morals, despite what it costs you. Cuz to be frank, Optimus was right. By the end of Predacons Rising, Megatron FINALLY understood the true meaning of oppression and he was sickened by his own actions. It's why Optimus said, "As even Megatron has displayed today, every sentient being possesses the capacity for change." In life, you will go through ups and downs. Sometimes, you lose faith in your principles, and sometimes, you regain them. By Season 3, Optimus had grown weary of all of it, genuinely fed up of trying to change Megatron. And then Predacons Rising happened, where his old hope was reignited, especially since Cybertron would soon be rejuvenated, and Optimus starting looking at things more positively again. I'm gonna disagree and say that I loved what S3 did for Prime and how Predacons Rising ended it off for him.

Great analysis! I agree with a lot of your points though I do have to disagree what his character arc is: it's not doing what must be done, but that his beliefs were right: people can change and have the capacity for good. The show puts him in numerous dilemnas to test his core beliefs to see if they are truly correct, and at the end of Predacons Rising, he is rewarded for being steadfast: Megatron DID change; it's too bad RID2015 completely ignored that plot point. For an analogy, take Captain America: he believes in freedom above all else and despite its dangers and drawbacks, his core tenets remain the same. Optimus's arc has a similar trajectory: despite how much the story tells him to abandon his beliefs, they remain the same at the end of the day.

I personally dislike the ending of Preds Rising, mostly because last-minute, unforeshadowed heel-turns are a personal pet peeve trope for me. If Megs's heel-turn had been set up before the movie, then I might like it. For example, I love Armada Megatron's redemption (I choose to ignore that Energon happened) and the original plan for DotM because those turns were set up. But Prime Megs is over here doing awful stuff right up until the end and...all it took was a couple days being puppeteered by Unicron for him to go, "My bad." I mean, it was him being oppressed that led to the Decepticon uprising in the first place (because Sentinel Prime can get fragged), so that whole, "now I understand oppression" line just rings hollow for me. Is it bad in concept? No, but the execution (and the execution of most of Season 3, honestly) left much to be desired. Thanks for commenting, by the way. I do like seeing others' perspectives, even if I may disagree. Hardly consider myself the "be-all, end-all" of media critiques. And I'm glad you enjoyed the video

Something I remember people being upset about with the Bayverse's portrayal of Optimus was his willingness to kill Decepticons, and that never really made sense to me. (It's been years since I watched more than the first Bayverse movie, so I can't speak much on his portrayal after that point). These are two factions that have been fighting a long, costly, and bloody war for, in some iterations, _millions of years._ Optimus has been fighting on the front lines for so long that he's undoubtedly had to end countless Decepticon lives before they landed on Earth. Yes, he is a kind and compassionate person and leader who wants peace and desperately wants his friend back, but he's also a warrior. Those two characteristics can both be true without compromising his beliefs or the integrity of his character. He gives Megatron all these chances because a peaceful resolution with him alive is obviously better than killing him to end the war, but if the olive branch is continuously snapped, burned, and spat on, there's only so many times Optimus can offer it before it shrivels and dies... He's not infallible or naive to the idea that he can win a war without taking lives, but he'll give chances to those he thinks can be better. He's just doing the best he can.

  • @KnightsRealm98

    @KnightsRealm98

    13 күн бұрын

Cliff had a similar amount of screentime to Casey Becker from Scream. Much like Casey, Cliff was present in all the marketing leading up to the show's release, and was presented as a main character. Add on that he has a history in the franchise at large, and killing him was quite a hook. On top of that, stories kill off minor characters to establish stakes all the time. Gared/Wil and Waymar Royce from GoT/ASOIAF for example. We know next to nothing about those guys, yet their deaths establish the threat of the White Walkers (or the *stakes*) pretty early on. Horror movies always use the "first kill" to establish stakes, and we know nothing about that hapless victim. What about Harry Potter's parents? Captain Antilles in Star Wars? Prince Theodred in LotR? Batman's parents? Uncle Ben? The list goes on. Do we genuinely know much about these characters when they die? Nope. But they establish particular stakes early on. The Potters, the Waynes, and Uncle Ben establish why the hero is what he is now, on top of the Potters establishing that Voldemort is a murderous freak. Antilles establishes how strong Vader is and how ruthless he can be, thus setting stakes for Luke's later fights with him. Theodred's death is meant to build sympathy for the new faction of Rohan and to show how far Saruman has fallen. Cliffjumper's death establishes that this isn't G1 (pre-'86 movie, which I actually do think handles its stakes far better...mostly due to its larger cast). Characters can die, and brutally. Now, does Prime fall short of delivering on what Cliff's death promised? Unfortunately, yes, due both to the studio and the limited cast. One thing that people don't seem to understand about character death is that the main reason why most characters have plot armor is because once a character is dead, their story's done. Kaput. And if a writer isn't done with that character, death kinda cuts their plan short. Unless they get resurrected, which is a pain in the butt to do right. If TFP had a cast like G1, more character death would make sense. Look at all those guys. Half of them don't even have lines in every episode. But with a fluctuating cast of 5-8, it's a bit more difficult. Of course, if S3 had committed to Bulkhead's war wound and killing off Bumblebee, then I'd be happier. I did like what they did with Magnus, but it was a minor plot point at best. More lingering injuries would have been nice, essentially. But, again, studio and limited cast. In short, killing off a minor character to establish stakes is incredibly common in fiction, so saying that we only knew Cliff for a handful of minutes is irrelevant. Again, the show *does* fall short on delivering on the promise unfortunately, but that doesn't take away from the weight of Cliffjumper's demise. Especially in how it affects Arcee throughout the story. She might just have the best character arc in the show, aside from maybe Starscream, and that arc begins (for the audience) with Cliffjumper's death. Not to mention Tailgate, who we know even less about. Never even saw that guy's face before he got fileted by Airachnid. And yet, he hangs like a ghost over Arcee. We care because *she* cares. Anyway, long-winded reply done.
