The Underrated Umbrella: Studio Lighting Made SIMPLE

While an umbrella is likely one of the first lighting modifiers a portrait photographer owns, it is often the most underutilized item as you grow. In this video, we're going to show you the power of an easy one-light setup using a large flash and umbrella to go from boring to beautiful in just a few minutes.

This was a nice lighting tutorial. Also I like the way he paid attention to her hair, it can make or break a shot for your portrait client. We have our Canon synced to the Canon Camera Connect app on our Ipad. It helps so much too view the images larger than whats on the back of your camera and our client enjoys seeing the photos larger too. You might not catch something that doesn't look good with the hair or clothing if you are just viewing on your camera.

Thanks Pye, that was a really clear demonstration of how to control light and especially setting an appropriate exposure to exclude the ambient light you can't control. I see why you so often feature Chelsea. She looks lovely but most importantly, flows through poses and expressions so naturally. You need to stop abusing her.😂

One quick question - why not shoot at 100 or 200 ISO ? Must say V-Flats are so helpful.

Cause he probabaly didn’t want to, not like the camera can’t take a photo at 800 iso

  • @ggstylz

The shots would have been underexposed, which means he would have needed to use a shutter speed that was to slow to exposure properly. By increasing the iso you’re able to increase the shutter speed to freeze the subject. Flash can freeze movement but you still need an acceptance shutter speed.

@@ggstylz I didn't get it because for proper exposure he can compensate with more flash power which he has plenty of.

What did you call that, a V flat? Why do some of these umbrella lighting kits come with like two white umbrella lights and two black umbrellas? Does one of them work as V flat?

Very nice. I was wondering about your opinion on posing and crop. Ive seen other people in the past, post similar stuff and if one limb is out of the shot, they get blasted for cutting off a limb. Any thoughts or rules to this would be appreciated.

@4:20.....irony, or...."1-2 watt-seconds" being the lowest power output?; is that correct? I ask because a typical (Nikon) speedlight is 50w/s, and @1/128th, should be appx. 7 watts. Or a setting still so LOW as to be unusable for portraiture. In my own cases, shooting thru an umbrella, I'm basically at 1/2 power, shooting F/8, ISO 100. Or....25w/s.

WHY WHY WHY ? In these videos do you always use a light costing $1000 + ? We aren't all rich you know, how about making something similar with something affordable ?
