I disagree. My observation is that things are profoundly unchanged, and we haven’t learned ANYTHING…

Until someone grasps some shred of their own shortcomings, jealousy, selfishness, materialism, capacity for cruelty, and arrogant denial that they are anything but perfect, deserving of all great things, until the garish light of reality reveals to them that they are actually the literal embodiment of all those those things, and worse, existentially manifested before the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient, and most Holy Great ‘I AM’ , and in keeping with His Perfection and Holiness, is also so merciful that He created a means by which such a rebellious creature as this could be restored, if they would only believe, and reach out and take what was offered. It’s just that one can’t DO that without simultaneously acknowledging that they ever NEEDED it, along with everything that implies. This requires a degree of humility that many just can’t make themselves embrace. My point is, if you don’t feel that you were shown undeserved mercy, why should you feel any obligation to forgive or show mercy yourself? In the story, Annette seemed to live in a world where her work ethic, her proud French heritage, (which she had nothing to do with), and her apparently enlightened love for her boyfriend, ostensibly because of her more noble principles and priorities, and all of this should more than outweigh any shortcomings that might be exposed on the proposed Day of Reckoning. She was wrong.
