The Uncelebrated Bass Legend Who Ignited the Disco Inferno

There's a bassist who must receive more credit. The disco era would be nothing without this man!
I'm talking about none other than...Maurice Gibb of The Bee Gees.

My top 5 no particular order Jive Talking/Night Fever/Staying Alive/You shoulda be dancing(yeah!)/Grease.I remember we couldn't believe our ears back then.Such perfection. Such a lush Top notch production at the time!Another levelStill are Unbeatable! To me Bee Gees and Abba made the most well crafted stuff of the '70s in maistream music scene ..and also in production terms i would also add the likes of Giorgio Moroder and Frank Farian.

Maurice wasn’t a disco bassist. He was a musician who helped shape Disco. He was an inventor and a songwriter. Bee Gees weren’t a disco band either. They just made music during disco. They made music LONG before and LONG after.

You're right, but the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack made them just about the biggest band on the planet, which is why so many people see them as a disco band. First impressions stick.
I've said this before. People just don't know The Bee Gees as well as they think they do. They were so infinitely talented.
Nice to see some appreciation for Maurice.

Mo was a phenomenal artist. He was the glue that held the group together. By all means he was a really funny, loving guy. He had his vices, he overcame alcoholism to become a loving husband and Father. He was truly talented, and hasn't gotten the credit he deserves. I am so glad u did this video on him. Rest easy Mo, you are truly missed. 💓
Very talented lad. If you're under the age of 50, it's hard to imagine the backlash this band got from the rock crowd of the late 70s/early 80s. They probably had more album burnings than The Beatles. Got to the point they couldn't even record anymore, instead relegated to songwriters on others' hits. Time smooths the hard edges, and hopefully people appreciate how talented this band really was.

He was just as important as the other two. When he died, the Bee Gees died. He was irreplaceable.
I listen to the BeeGees and check out the writing credits. Maurice was responsible for a ton of their biggest hits. Every one of the BeeGees is phenomenal.
I’m always in awe of artists who play complicated patterns while singing and Maurice Gibb does it with panache!
Maurice always seemed like the coolest guy in the group.
People always spoke of the harmonies and the high notes, which are great, but what I noticed as the difference maker in the most popular songs was the bass.
Some of the greatest performers of the past 50 years all in one family.
The Bee Gees were naturally talented. No editing needed. Listen to them sing accapella.
Totally agree that the discipline to not play too many notes makes Maurice shine

The jive talking bass line is epic.
The way his bass lines melded with the guitar creating sort if a two-person ten-string groove machine was some magic stuff. Stayin’ Alive is a great example of that.
Already love the Bee Gees, but thanks for high lighting Maurice in this video!
It’s terrible how overlooked they are. They have a huge versatile catalog and most people judge them based on 5 years of their career. Whatever disco was isn’t important to me, good music is important to me and their music was out of this world! Just when I think I’ve heard everything they’ve ever done, I manage to stumble upon something else
I wish he got this attention while he was still with us.
I grew up with Bee Gees music from their days emerging in the 60's as an incredible 3 piece harmony to their stellar work after the breakup of the band, and albums like Main Course and Children of the World and then of course, Saturday Night Fever. Subsequently, we had Spirits Having Flown, but a p-ssed off DJ in Chicago led a US wide ban on everything disco and everyone forgot about anything the Bee Gees did outside of Saturday Night Fever. Though they had continued to write hits for Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers (Islands in the Stream) and Celine Dione (Immortality), their own reputation as a group took over a decade to come back. Watching Barry Gibb taught me how to use open tuning and Maurice taught me that a grooving bass line was more important than learning Roundabout note-for-note. An incredible band, and so sad the only one left is Barry after losing Andy, Maurice, and Robbin (in that order). Count me as having always been an unapologetic fan of the The Bee Gees.
And NONE of the brothers could read music....THATS CRAZY
I've been telling people for a few years that Maurice Gibb was an underrated bass player even though he's known more as a singer. Maurice lays down some serious funk on those Bee Gees Disco hits.
Maurice was one excellent musician and composer!! His bass playing was almost like McCartney but groovier 🥳🥳
I’m glad that Maurice is getting the recognition he so deserved when he was alive. Sadly missed, never forgotten 🌹
I’ve always thought the bass line to Stayin Alive was really killer and drives the song.
I like his song man in the middle he was definitely the glue to the band

Hearing and watching them perform live was eye opening, and I gained a whole new appreciation for their entire catalog, even the songs that they wrote for other artists. Maurice seemed like the one who was responsible for the arrangements and musicality, what an awesome musician!

That was a great demonstration of how Maurice's bass playing excelled in ways you wouldn't expect, like spacing out the notes so they had more force when they landed, and shaping the song around a complex but not busy groove.

He is just awesome. I always thought that. For one stage of their career, he was their band! Plus he was a funny guy. He didn't seem to ever take himself seriously. He seemed very genuine. And he was a killer bassist. And that discipline you speak of. To completely NOT play anything. That is genius. It adds a whole other swing to the rhythm. This stop / start tug that makes everything ebb and flow that's constant. Genius. If you were dancing The Bump with someone, he is hitting it on every bump. Which truly, when dancing, is when you're using your hips to their max. Accenting that one beat, in a 4 beat pattern. It's just a smart move.
