My whole life I was raised in a Christian household. I always struggled however with certain concepts of Christianity. I passed by The Unbelievers documentary on Netflix many times refusing to watch it, because as a Christian you are taught to avoid atheism like the plague. One day I decided to watch it, and it changed my life forever. I didn't feel the need to believe in something I didn't anymore. I didn't feel alone. I didn't feel confused. Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss are to me what "God" is to Christians- they saved me from a life of unhappiness, hate, and fear. They are absolutely right when they say science is poetic. I am SO THANKFUL I watched that documentary.

Carolyn, be careful about who you follow, or what paths you take. With Richard Dawkins and Laurence Krauss, although they are elite scientists in their field, they are practically illiterate in the field of theology and philosophy. I am glad to hear your views have altered and changed. You look like a beautiful, smart young woman, and my recommendation to you, from skeptic to skeptic, would be to learn philosophy before ascribing to science being the only way, as RD and LK have.

***** I don't know about Krauss, but Dawkins is nowhere near "illiterate" in theology. He knows a great deal about theology, just watch any of his debates with a religious person. You don't have to believe in theology to be well versed in it.

Mitchell Arthur completely agree. I've never known either to be illiterate in theology and I've watched many many debates!

Carolyn Neal Mitchell Arthur I assure you, I have watched his debates. Maybe he has studied religion to a significant degree, but philosophy, he does not even interact with most of the arguments for the existence of God, and thinks that the universe could have been created by an almighty ham and cheese sandwich (look 'Jaclyn Glenn')

***** he probably doesn't interact because he is a scientist and knows quite a lot about religion, and the knowledge of science alone can guide someone into a disbelief of God or any god.

im always baffled at the idea of growing up in a western world, but still feeling alone due to your non belief. I mean... I've just always assumed that most people around me share my unbelief, which is true around here. Makes me really happy that I was bon in scandinavia and not the southern united states. Around here its perfectly normal for people to make fun of religion when its brought up, not really mean spirited, but more like... the same way you'd make fun of other silly old traditions

Ohh I love the poster someone in the movie is holding that says "Science flies you to the moon, Religion flies you into buildings"... It's a great quote for an Atheist because they can understand and appreciate it, but sadly for a great portion of the population it will only mean one or both of the following: 1: I'm a Christian and I never flew/would never fly a plane into a building, those were terrorists not Religion! 2: Islamic Fundamentalists didn't fly planes into the twin towers, it was the Government, Illuminati, False Flag, Aliens, etc... Willful Ignorance is a terrible thing... Ohh what a strange world we live in :\

I'm a Christian and I enjoy videos like this. The scientific community, which includes many many theists, is doing s great job at explaining certain processes. It doesn't logically show us that there is no God though. It can only help better understand what is, even though out of discovery more questions arise.

+emmanuel joshua How do you combine the knwoledge you've now acquired in science with your religious beliefs? For instance, the book of Genesis and Darwin's theory of evolution? How do you reconcile facts and beliefs?

Francois Daliot Good question. Genesis explains that God created everything, but never really told us how (in terms of processes). Scientific research does well in giving us a deeper understanding of natural these natural processes. We see the "why" and the "what" when we look to God, and through our own searching we can find the "how." Our deeper understanding of processes does not nullify an agent which has put these into place.

I get what you're saying, and it almost makes perfect sense. But I was referring to the specifics of the book of Genesis... We do know how human beings came about: Evolution. According to the Bible, God created Man, after he created the Earth. But we do know that the Earth was formed 4.6 billion years before the Human species came to be, and we do know that we've evolved from thousands and thousands of species before becoming Homo Sapiens, so it is entirely inconsistent with the Bible. My question was, and is, how do you cope with that? Haven't you got to a point where your beliefs contradict with what scientific facts?

  • @mannycjay6401

Francois Daliot I'm sorry I don't fully understand what you're saying. How does the earth being 4.6 billion years old and humans coming after that contradict the Bible?

+emmanuel joshua Let's take a different approach. The Bible cleary states that God created the Earth in six days. From scientific knowledge, we know that it took much much much longer than that for the Earth to form itself. How do you cope with that?

Watching this made me feel very confident in a belief in God. First, they admitted that natural selection was a blind process that does not plan ahead despite the fact that it appears that there was planning in the design. Secondly, they admitted that intelligent life is an complete accident! Therefore we are the result of total chance and a blind process! Thirdly, they admitted they do not know or understand how life began. We can confidently have faith that we are the result of an intelligent creator we ordained intelligent life in his image, and we are no accident but planned creation and we have no real reason to believe otherwise. Alleluyah!

***** This is a really ridiculous conclusion to come to. If you knew anything about random, and the probability, you could see that things like life were ever so probable to happen. In fact, almost anything can happen in this universe based on probability. For example, there is a chance that when you open your dryer, your clothes will come out folded and stacked in a neat pile, i mean, so many things can happen, and when you see the compounds that it takes to make like being so lush, you see that compared to the dryer example, life's existence in the universe out of random, was as probable as you eating in the near future.

TheKeyser94 Whoa! Who are you? Is this something you copied from somewhere and you pasted or is this something you read through carefully. It will take me a while to look through each verse, but I think I need to print it out and look carefully over each of the verses you mentioned. I would like to mention though before I get started that you will not be able to put God in a box. If God said it in His Word, then He meant it, but you have to look at each item in context, okay? I look forward to hearing back from you.

TheKeyser94 Alright, thanks for the list. Let's look at point 75. You are saying that one gospel writer claims 2 blind men were healed, and the other writer claims only 1 was healed. I believe that all the blind (including you) who seek the Lord can receive their sight whether it is physical or spiritual. I believe in these two passages that there were at least 3 blind men who received their sight. Let me hear your response. (How is life in Uruguay? and please tell me something about yourself.)

Becky Urbansky Actually that "writer" is in the same bible that you read, I would say writers, because the bible it self have many writers, that are contradictions, and you have take as such, it good to see now at then to find a theist that is actual polite, I am sorry to inform you that I am atheist, I don't believe in any deity and I am plain nihilist, I care more about the historical aspect of the bible, for example how that many contradictions come to be.

These 3 are the perfect combination of humor and knowledge. Love it! Always been a huge fan of Dawkins/Krauss and read most of their books, and always been a fan of Penn as well because I love comedy and really a kind genius knowledge with common sense things that have to do with observation of humans. Anything with Krauss in it gets me going, he like reminds me of old school German scientists where I came from.

I had to stop this video 8 minutes in because I had never heard of The Unbelievers film before seeing this presentation. After watching it, I came back to this... I cannot express how grateful I am to hear these kinds of questions, such as the one about feeling a sense of overwhelming awe about nature, which religious people have turned into something spiritual as if it's proof of a god. I loved hearing encouragement to use the word "fact" in lieu of the bastardized word "theory." And most of all I appreciate Penn Jillette's answer about how to handle religious loved ones praying for my godless soul. I love seeing fellow atheists that share that wonder I feel, which religious people seem to think we atheists are incapable of feeling. Thank you for posting this!! It's so important in this brief time we have to live that none of us need to feel alone just because we embrace naturalism.
