In the US a coaster is something placed under something cold, like a beer. But things placed under hot things like pots are called trivets.

I was thinking of those under the beer glasses too, lol. They usually are used to protect the table from staining and things like that.

In Australia, we put hot and cold drinks on coasters to protect the bench or table.

Regionally, around Syracuse/Fulton/Oswego NY, trivets are called "Hot Plates" which is REALLY confusing since, in the normal world, hot plates are a thing used to heat, or keep food warm.

It doesn't. It's a trivet. It's in the title. It doesn't operate as a coaster because it isn't a coaster. Nor does it coast, though it is not powered, so if it did coast, it would also coast. But you could place a condensation prone vessel upon it, and keep some of that condensate from transferring directly to the moisture sensitive substrate below.
