At 13yo my history teacher brought her TV from home, and had a janitor put up an antenna. The class watched live (8 second delay) the motorcade, they did'n cut away. The whole class burst into tears at the atrocity we had just witnessed.

Neat to see the Flying Horse so prominently displayed and widely used. We had a Flying Horse gas station on the corner of the small CT town where I grew up. There is a bank on that corner now.

Sorry to hear that. I grown without pops, my pop-pop who raised me, died of cancer 20yrs ago. Now I spend every day with my son, to give him something I never experienced with my dad, but thanks to my old man, I am trying to be the best dad in the world. I am thinking about g-dad every day since he passed. RIP

I went to all 89 Texas state parks. Started in April 2020 and finished in April 2023. Just finished visiting 48 states and the 51 national parks within them. Drove 90,000 miles in 3 1/2 years.... much of that was the 1000 miles through Texas every time I drove my cargo van back home to Houston. Yep, you drive 1000 miles in Texas and you're STILL in Texas 🙂

In 1963 when President Kennedy was killed, I was in 8th grade. The principal came on the voice cam and told us all to go home. She also said that our President had been shot and that he died. I walked home in a trance. Could not comprehend what had just happened. When I got home, my mother held me as I cried. She was crying too. Will never forget. Never.

We were Air Force brats and stationed in Athens Greece. We heard about it the following day on the radio. I was 7 years old , but knew we were ugly Americans. I was so sad and scared. 😢I was in my 30’s before I saw the original news articles. They closed the base the following year. I ended up going to the JFK HS that had been dedicated the day before he died, in San Antonio.

I like how you add a respectful chunk of history into the mix of your videos. If you make it back to central Texas, you might enjoy peeking behind the traditional Cowboy and Mexican cultures, and instead digging into the German History of Texas. In the 1800's, Galveston was a major immigration starting point for German settlers, who spread throughout central Texas, often connecting with traveling groups of German immigrants who had previously settled in North Dakota, traveling up and down the rivers, working as carpenters. The combined groups of immigrants helped each other build their own towns, homes and churches. This resulted in the "Painted Churches" of south Texas -- unassuming, small buildings that were elaborately hand-painted and decorated inside to resemble the stone interiors of their traditional centuries-old church buildings back in Germany. Visit in October and you'll find many local Oktoberfests that aren't just excuses to party. Poke around and you can find a few community whose residents still speak German, and keep a traditional biergarten or two tucked behind local businesses and city buildings. During WWII, a number of towns hosted POW camps of German prisoners, many of whom worked as laborers for local farmers while detained, and ultimately forswore German allegiance so they could remain in Texas and become American citizens. Naturalized Germans remain as a small, hidden subculture in a lot of Texas communities.

Seventh-generation Texan here. Born in Dallas, grew up in Houston, went to school in Austin, and now living in San Antonio (with a short 25 year career in Hollywood thrown in somewhere in there). Pops is one cool dude. I got the "Michael Nesmith", "in situ" and other references, since he and I are of similar age. Really enjoy your videos, but the best thing of all is seeing a father and son traveling and experiencing life together. Wish to God I'd been able to do that with my dad, but hope to make up for it somewhat with my son someday while I still can, since he's turning eighteen this year. Anyway, you two have an obvious respect for Texas and understanding of its history, and made the trip interesting for even me...and I really appreciate you both.

Hey, I just want to thank you for your video. And I wish I had spent time with my dad on a long road trip. You know, I thought I was the only one with some regrets but based on the comments below, whether intentional or not, this time you are spending, you are really doing what all of us should be doing, it's something you can never get back.

Pops and I are close in age, I was in 4th grade and had the same sort of experience, school was let out after President Kennedy was shot. We had no idea of the magnitude, but the tv was on basically the entire weekend and it is something I will never forget. The sounds, the images, the incredible sadness of that weekend made an impression on everyone the lived it.

I was in the 8 th grade in history class when President Kennedy was shot. I too watched it all on TV for several days. I don’t remember going home early from school. On another I had no idea there was so much to see and do in Dallas alone. Definitely worth a road trip.!

1st Grade Catholic school, the principal knocked on door and pulled teachers in hallway to tell them of the assassination. Remember all the crying. Watched non-stop all the events that transpired through burial. I live in Japan now. From Chicago but spent (2) transfers to Plano and Austin. Miss it so much! Good episode.

❤ I loved the Texas Tour. We've been to so many spots you featured but inspired to revisit. We've stayed in Goliad before to paint the scenery, but it looked so romantic through your lense. I must go again. Your Pops is so cool and could not stop watching him eat all that BBQ. THANK YOU for featuring our beautiful Texas.

By telling everyone what was happening as soon as possible, you probably saved lives. I don't see anything wrong in what you did, or said. Making people aware was the right thing to do. We're looking forward to new videos, and happier days. Keep up the good work, and thank you for all you do!❤️ 🐶 🐕💕

Great Video-I live in Austin and I always tell people who want to see the bats that if they want to avoid the crowds of people at night, just get to the bridge between 6 and 6:30 AM and see them return.

I love your channel! I was 4 years old when President Kennedy was killed. I wasn’t even in school yet. I didn’t know a lot but knew I loved President Kennedy and was very sad to this day! I watched the funeral with my mom and remember little John JR. at the funeral saluting as his Dads procession went by. Heart wrenching!😢
