Jonesy is such an underrated player. The dude just exudes rock and roll. The tone, the swagger, the unpretentious grab you by the ears tone, the rock solid riffage. And he got great! Every time he came back around he was better. He and Malcolm Young are two of my absolute heroes for those reasons.

I was lucky enough my wife about 20 odd years ago won on EBay a white Les Paul signed dated and authenticated by Steve Jones dated from their first comeback tour in Finsbury Park in 1996, I believe it was originally offered as a prize in one of the UK guitar mags. Sadly it’s not a Custom just a Studio with gold hardware but it has turned that lovely cream yellow colour. I’d wanted a Gibson Les Paul since I was in my early teens in the late 70s always way beyond my price range so was well thrilled to get this particular Les Paul

Nailed it. I've been a Sex Pistols fanatic for 45 years and it's always been mainly about Steve's guitar for me. I'm primarily a bass player but I play some guitar too and the only guy I've ever tried to properly get right is Steve Jones. I've picked up tips and stuff over the years, more recently and watching KZread stuff (lots of geezers out there in KZread land doing instructional vids and GETTING IT WRONG!) and what you have correctly realised is that what Steve lacked in technical ability he more than made up for in feel. That guy was just obviously in love with the noise he was making! So thanks for the video dude, I've picked up a few more tips from it, mainly with the Anarchy solo which I nearly got right but now, watching you, I reckon I can nail it.

Dagan there's a few vids on KZread that attempt Jonesie's tone. A couple of 'em come close. But jeez mate you NAILED it. I salute you sir! And all your train spotter info is spot on. Just one small correction - the custom WAS used on NMTB. There is actually an interview with Steve that explains just Bodies and EMI had the black beauty and he can still tell the slight tonal difference between it and the custom, which was used on all the other tracks.

I learned it by heart immediately, started a punkband with some guys, most of our songs were Sex Pistols and Damned covers lol, then I was asked to join the only Dutch punkband that had a record deal, we recorded some great songs and did a lot of great gigs at a lot of great places, I barely played a solo for at least 1-2 years, not until I bought a 1975 Gibson Flying V in '79, it totally pissed off the singer so I quit the band. I can't play nearly as good as the handsome fellow in this video, but pretty much the entirety of last year I've been trying to replicate songs from that one album watching dozens of different riffs and different peoples takes on the same song. When I got into the pistols I could barely play, now I'm honestly finally content with what I'm doing. I got me own playstyle, I can kind of competently play punk. Sure, its easy to hear that my playstyle is very pistols-inspired (except I can't play solos for shit) but I mean its enough for me. If I got a lead guitar to accompany it actually sounds sick

I died my hair like Sids, amongst others but I heard that Steve Jones 'nicked' the Les Paul from a Bob Marley gig and striped it and put the pin up girls on it to help disguise it. I loved this video. I first started playing after watching Play in a Day the Steve Jones Way on the Nevermind the Bollocks Rockumentary (Which I noticed you referenced a lot). I just used to watch it and copy his hand movements. The sound I've always wanted to recreate was his from that segment with the Marshall High Stack and a Burny. He even plays down half a step in that one I saw an article about the origninal Steve Jones custom because Steve actually sold it at one point. Jah Wobble from PIL thinks he owns it but Jones was presented with "The original" and he looked over it a few times saying "It'd been broken a few times" but the knocks wern't right on it so it wasn't the right one

if i had seen this 10, 20, 30 , 40 years ago , i would have creamed myself. I was 16 in 1980 when i found the album NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS in the city library in Cedar Rapids Iowa. It changed my life then. Changed my taste in music. While me and my friends were listening to Rush, KISS, Nugent, Queen , Aersosmith. I felt i had FOUND something different. IT BLEW ME AWAY. My friends didnt get it, except one. We loved the PISTOLS. My first band, i taught them God Save the Queen. This is such a cool video. Classic Riffs.

Great playing and sound. "Fire and Gasoline" was a great record too. I saw him playing live while he was touring that record. I think he was opening for The Cult. I also got to spend a good part of an evening with him at the Cathouse in L.A. I'm pretty sure he only hung out with me cause I had cigarettes and was gushing over his work. We parted ways that night when he noticed a girl seemed very interested in me and he asked me what I was doing hanging out with him when I could be hanging out with her. I took his advice but- in all honesty I would have rather hung out with him.

The JCM800s would be post-glory days work: solo work and/or reunions. Those amps were out in ‘77. The ‘90s JCM800s were modified by Harry Kolbe and were Billy Duffy’s.

I love Epiphone guitars, and usually argue that they are absolutely close to the sound of Gibson, but Steve Jones (my favorite guitar player of all time) didn't play guitar, he played tone, and his tone is so specific that the Epiphone just can't reproduce it. Great video. And btw, there's a black p90 Epiphone Les Paul behind you.

  • @SionynJones

The main difference is pickups in this case to Epiphone. Their probuckers are ever bit of a paf recreation as burst buckers. The Steve Jones Les Paul has 490T and 490R which are very different and more high output than the mid output paf style of the probuckers and burst buckers. The p90 in the background is a signature JJN old glory.
