The ULTIMATE PORTRAIT LENS? :: Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master

Ғылым және технология

The Sony 135mm f/1.8 G Master lens is the 31st lens in Sony's full-frame, e-mount lineup.
I quickly fell in love with this lens - it is outstanding. Designed for longer portraits, this has some of the best optical rendering that I've seen on any lens to date. This is the ultimate portrait lens. Bokeh is excellent, it has outstanding sharpness and the autofocus speeds are impressive. This has the same XD linear drive system that is found in the Sony 400mm f/2.8 G Master as well as the Sony 24mm f/1.4 G Master lenses.
One correction - around 03:17 I say there's little spherical aberration at small apertures when in face I meant to say diffraction. This is where the sharpness softens in the lens and for most lenses this starts around f/16. Its been a long week - sorry for the confusion.

135 is a FANTASTIC portrait length for headshots. Has the nice "compression" of a longer lens without such a long working distance to the subject. One of my favorite focal lengths! I owned the ZA 135/1.8 with the Sony a900 many years ago... also a fantastic lens. I still think that combo was one of the best I've shot for faces, actor headshots, and high-school senior portraits.

I am watching this late in 2019. In October 2019 I sold my HUGE Nikon kit: D5, 10 prime lenses, and made enough to finally make the jump to Sony. I looked at Sony a couple years back, but they just didn't have the glass. This fall, with the announcement of the D6 and the Sony A92, I knew the value of my D5 was about to tank, so I put it all on eBay and it all sold over the course of a few weeks. I bought a Sony A 7 R 4, and my three favorite focal lengths: 24mm f/1.4 GM, 85 f/1.4 GM and the 135 f/1.8 GM. So pleased with these futuristic lenses that I don't miss my Nikon f/1.4 G lenses AT ALL. No real interest in any Ziess Batis or Sonnar glass. GM all the way. I don't think I really need any other glass now for quite a while. I mean, I do kinda want the 90mm macro, but my entire Sony kit now travels everywhere with me. I also picked up the Profoto A1X and the new Sony shotgun microphone. I love this gear.

Very helpful video. Thank you!! I'm slowly migrating from the Canon world, and primarily shoot high school senior portraits. Canon's 135mm is one of my go-to focal lengths for the closeups and the full body shots. Switching to Sony has been great, but they haven't had too many options in that focal range. Excited to try it!!

Thnx Ted for the video. I got this lens for my a7R IV and it's an awesome one. The focal length does require a bit of space, but it's worth it. Alongside the 85mm F1.4 GM that I also own, the 135 is a perfect companion.

Ted, I own this lens and love it-love using it, love the incredibly fast eye autofocus, love the image quality, but I have one serious problem with it. My poor studio feels tiny when I’m using it! I need to move stuff around so I can back up enough to get anything fuller than a head shot. Now I know what you’re saying -get a new studio! And I do have alternative indoor spaces in which I don’t feel so restricted with this lens. But do watch your rear end when you’re shooting in restaurants or at receptions, because this lens is so much fun that you want to move around!

FINALLY.. we get to see some of your images,,,Wonderful stuff and WAY too infrequent,,This lens looks like a winner. I'm glad you commented on the 85 Sony G as well.. I recently did a video shoot where we leased an A7II and had the Rokinons as part of the rental "kit". The rental manager had just gotten in a 24mm 1.4 G and offered to let me use it as well.. It was amazing.. then we ended up doing reshoots later and the Rokinon kit was out on another lease ,, but they had picked up the 85 G Master and we were given a nice deal on that. I was just remembering how the word "clunky" echoed through my head as you said it on the video,,,The image quality was very good,,but we did all manual focus set-ups,,(which I do about 70% anyway),,and it looked great,,but very excited and encouraged to see what this new beastie will do in the wild,, Thanks again for great info and commentary,,And post more of your work!!

The 135mm focal length combined with the F1.8 would be a stretch you would be looking at an ISO of 3200-12800 & a shutter speed of roughly 1/125thsec to get motion free images!, unfortunately low light is where F1.4 shines with cleaner ISO!. You would not want less than an A7Sii, A9 or A7iii of a body!.

I thinkTed brings up a good point about the GM lenses being something special. If you watch comparisons between FE 85 1.8 and 1.4GM it almost looks as if, pixel for pixel, the 1.8 is sharper. But the GM gives the skin this smooth, warm and creamy look. It has character! Sure Sony can make a $600 razor-sharp lens, but they’re also producing glass that has personality and character.

What I really want from Sony is a 105mm 1.4 GM. On the fence about Sigma's despite loving the images it produces, because of the size and weight. I know Sony's offering, if they were to make one, would be lighter, a little more reliable in low light, and produce images on par, if not better than the Sigma. Especially where bokeh is concerned due to there likely being 11 aperture blades. Would really love to hear this announcement from Sony before the end of the year.

Hi Ted, I don't agree about the 24mm GM, because it uses the DDSSM, (Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor), AF System. (The 24GM is not on my wishlist.) The 135GM, (Not including the 400GM, or the 600GM), is the first Sony lens to use the XD Linear Motor System. (This is an amazing lens and is definantly on my wishlist.) As far as I know all the G-Master lens since the 135GM use this new focusing system. These new G-Master Lenses are Amazing; I plan on owning the 35GM (already own this one), 50GM f1.2, a refresh of the 85GM f1.2, a 100GM f1.4 (Not made yet), and this 135GM. I plan on owning all prime lenses, with the exception of the 12-24mm f/2.8 G-Master, because that is just to amazing of a lens to not own. Talk to you Later, Mathew

I just started shooting with the awesome Fuji 90mm f/2 and after watching this I am blown away - that the Fuji can be had for only $700! I would love for anyone to present an objective comparison, will a paying customer be able to tell the difference (outside of low light) or not? The Fuji requires a little bit of hand-holding discipline but that Sony is much heavier, it is going to be much harder to manage during a shoot. PS. Not a hater of Sony or full-frame at all.

The only thing that I'm seeing that I don't like about this lens is the Bokeh from f/1.8 to f/2.4 , it's "Football" Shaped. I know it is perfectly round at f/2.8, but with 11 Rounded Aperture Blades, you'd think that it would be perfectly round at f/1.8 even more so than at f/2.8. (Still learning though)

The aperture blades have no effect on the image and bokeh balls when wide open, the inner wall of the lens itself becomes the aperture.

@@snodgegrass8 Thank you, now I know. So if they "Fixed" that issue, it would be more like the 100mm STF f/2.8 with a *T5.6

  • @joeljrichards

    @joeljrichards

@@Warren3327 Yes and no. The 100 STF is T/5.6 because of the STF ("smooth trans focus") which means it has an element that feathers the out of focus areas at the expense of two stops of light-hence a T-stop of 5.6. The 100mm STF has round bokeh balls because the front element & lens size are so large compared to the aperture, which would be true even if the STF element were removed. The difference in absolute aperture size of the two lenses (100mm f/2.8 is ~36mm vs. 135mm f/1.8 is ~75mm) is significant. So if they've got similarly sized front elements, which one will have mechanical vignetting? Stopped down to an aperture of similar size, the 135mm will also have perfectly round balls. To get the same effect wide open would require ... well, I have no idea how big those front elements would have to be but ridiculous most likely.

Focusing speed is like "Beakon B10 has the fastest autofocus in the world (asterisk: among Beakon B1x lineup) that is 0.1s (asterisk: when it is that bright you can't open your eyes) (asterisk: when using the kit lens) (asterisk: with a battery grip)" What if they just turned off the lights in just one location to test real indoor conditions?

I'll stick with the Sigma 135mm 1.8 I got off eBay for $700, that's just about 1/3 of the price of this new Sony. I'll save $1,200 and have slower autofocus (though still have eye-AF with the MC-11). IMO don't get this lens unless you have money to throw around or need fast autofocus. Christopher Frost photography claims the Sigma is one the sharpest lenses he's ever shot, and he's tested hundreds of lenses; in this case you're not missing out on optical quality by saving money, just having your glass be "native."

Beautiful out of focus areas, and more sharpness and insane resolution than any human eye needs. ...and I'm speaking from experience, as a professional portrait photographer shooting some of the world's best athletes for many many years, shooting with Hasselblads and Phase One Backs. Some of these lenses today are just overkill, and pumped up with Marketing hype.
