    Steven Freyette is a genius , he really hit a home run with the power station . I would get one myself but I bought a torpedo reload a few years ago , so I use that with a cab m+ Into an active speaker for home use with my valve amps . This setup works fantastically well but I will still probably get a power station on day just because , lol .

    Bought a used PS-2 recently. Pimarily for attenuation, but I also have a Line 6 Helix and wanted to try the power amp feature into a standard cab. Works for both for sure. I'm using mine with a Fender Super Sonic 22. I can use that amp at low volume without the Power Station, but it sounds better by cranking the amp some and attenuating it. Thanks for the video.

    The three position dip toggle switches only affect the reactive load portion. If you are using it as described in scenario 5 (as a tube power amp only) those switches won't change the sound no matter how they are set.

    That's simply not true. Those switches are active anytime I use it, and I never use the reactive load. Using it as an attenuator or poweramp the switches always work for me.

    @@shredaintdead9323 Check out page 4 of the Fryette PS-2A user manual. "NOTE: These switches only operate when your load speaker output is connected to the Power Station Amp In jack." For a modeler / preamp you would use either the line in or the effects return inputs. These inputs feed the power amp and do not send signal through the reactive load.

    Awesome video! I’m really wanting one of these. I have amps I never can turn up to get the sweet spot, they are effectively useless. And I’ve been looking at the Synergy Preamp modules, like the Ultra Lead and the IICP. Dumb question, but I believe the load in is up to 200 watts, so it can even handle the my Bugera 1960 150 watt plexi head, but I’m curious on the speaker requirements out. I was leaning toward the PS100 for the channel switching, but if I have that matched with my PittBull 45 or my JCM800 50 watt combo, won’t I be at risk on blowing the speaker? Or can the output of the PS100 be dropped to a lower wattage? Also on the front end, how would you feed multiple amps or preamps into it to be able to switch from one to another?

    Save yourself the trouble and get a THD Hotplate at the resistance value you prefer (4, 8 or 16 ohm). They were literally designed to handle SLP100s wide open. Despite Bugeras marketing "150 watts" is the peak output power but consistently it puts out something more around 100-120. Also, attenuators do not drop wattage, only volume. With the volume low enough on the amp, you could probably run your Bugera into a speaker(s) under 150 watts and be okay, but the volume would be so low that the attenuator would be useless and the speaker would not be adding tone to the signal in any meaningful way.

    @@riffsnoleads Thanks for the info. I have been watching reviews and seeing other ones, like the Boss Waza Tube Amp Expander and the Mesa Boogie Cab Clone IR*. Many of the videos say the older resistor based attenuators muddy the tone and feel, where the “reactive” transistor based attenuators don’t. Do you notice much tone change and does the feel change with the Hot Plate? Or is it so small that it doesn’t justify the price difference?

  • @riffsnoleads

    @riffsnoleads

    @@donmcdonald4874 I have not personally noticed any significant "tone suck" and if there has been any I have compensated it with the amp EQ. The feel seems the same a well to me. All my attack dynamics seem retained. That all said, I don't buy into the "true bypass saves your tone" hysteria either, so you should take this all with salt. I also only my attenuators just as load boxes for at home recording into cab IRs, live I just punish those who refuse to wear hearing protection.

    The are some errors in your video. First the PS-100 its not 6L6, but its a small detail. When you talk about using it with preamps you are talking about using it as a poweramp. The switches in the front are settings of how the reactive load behaves as a speaker to the amp, if you use it just as a power amp with the line in those switches dont make anything. Because the reactive load its not in the chain

Preamp -> PS line in -> PS speaker out -> PS speaker in -> PS line out -> computer. This way you can crank the PS poweramp and get poweramp distortion with your preamp. And use the PS to atenuate itself.

    The ksr is just a poweramp. This can attenuate, make Amps louder too, has its own fx loop, ohm matcher and has more options for using with modelers and can add an fx loop to any amp or preamp pedal that doesn't have one. The Ksr can't do any of that. So for the same price, this is a no brainer.

My jvm and xxx get very fizzy with it, but my 6260 and jcm800 sound great and I can't say it's the amps because I have other passive attenuators that sound a lot better with them than the fryette does. At the end of the day it's an interesting and useful peice of gear but I think the rivera rock crusher is a better choice for just straight attentuation.
