The ULTIMATE METAL PICKUPS (From the Greek God of Power Metal!)

What does Gus G do when he just can't find the perfect guitar pickups for his shredtastic heavy metal solos? He starts his own company, that's what! Say hello to Blackfire Pickups, from Greek guitar monster Gus G. Two models of pickups are available and in this video I get to check out the Proteus set, which can be wired as either passive OR active pickups. Totally cool and a truly crushing tone.

    The separate pre-amp design is similar with what S.Duncan, Fishman & even Kiesel Guitars use in their active systems. Like already mentioned, you can install either a mini-switch or maybe a push-pull pot on the tone or volume knob, to go from active to passive, like the Fishman Fluence "voices".

  • @davew1134
    @davew11343 жыл бұрын

    Gus took this idea from Seymour Duncan, as his Seymour Duncan pickups were identical with passive pickups with a outboard preamp. I did some beta testing when Frank Falbo worked at Seymour on the preamp to do active and passive. Frank is at Fishman now with the Fluenece line.

    hey Maxx, This is not a new idea. Old 80s shred guitars like the Charvels came with this kinda concept as well. Even, EMG does this with the retroactive set. Seymour Duncan also did this for Gus G with his signature pups with them. Duncan even sells the Blackout modular Preamp where you can combine your existing passive pups and add the blackouts preamp for some of that blackouts added output and sound.

    I think I hear a touch of clear upper mid crunch, as well as the full lower mids - compared to your typical humbucker. Maybe they just cut the treble a bit. I wonder how much of the tone shaping is pickup design, and how much is preamp. Reminds me of an experimental guitar I built once that had a built-in EQ pedal. In the end, I decided its easier to just put the EQ at the front of the pedal chain.
