Of course the MagnaCut outperforms the 20CV in the edge retention test, it had a duller edge to begin with. Edge loss is not linear, it tapers off as the edge angle becomes greater.

See Cedric and Ada's page for a real comparison of steels, not this marketing team derived rubbish. Maybe use the brains you were given to understand knives and the steels they are made from and how they will work for YOU, not some douchey BHQ star of today to rig tests to sell the new fire.
Entertaining video, but really flawed methods. Submerged steel rusts slower than exposed, wet steel. And a sharper starting edge will lose ground faster than a not-so-sharp starting edge.

We should have asked you first
Did Larrin say that MagnaCut "rivals H1"? On his corrosion chart, H1 is 10/10, MagnaCut is 9.5/10, and 20CV is 9. Also note that factory edges are not great indicators of ultimate edge retention. They should be sharpened a few times to both ensure angles and get down to fresh steel. Otherwise, good video.

This, they say it's hand sharpened but never mention that it is done with a fast belt grinder that's likely to make it not as hard(From the heat) for the first one or two sharpening sessions(Depending on how much material you take out) and it'll get to the right hardness after that
I like these kinds of vids. It’s making me want to actually invest in the super steels. Sometimes I don’t see them as worth it, but when I actually can see the performance it makes me think differently.

I grabbed one of the Magnacut exclusive White River FC 3.5's. Can't wait to get using it. Well balanced steel.
Just an observation, it appears that your rust may be coming from liners, pivots, and hardware as none of the blades seem to have rust near the tips ( the most deeply submerged area and most involved in test). Just a thought : )

Enjoyed this video. It’s good to see George and the crew found their BladeHQ groove. I do have one request in future videos though. It would be great if these KZread videos offered sneak peeks into upcoming knife releases. That practice seems to have fallen off the radar completely. Is BladeHQ providing these release notifications somewhere else? If so, where? I haven’t noticed them on Instagram either.
I don't usually pay much attention to latest greatest super steels, but did order my first knife in MC for the heck of it for fun.
Cool test by the BHQ team! Think it would have been a little more controlled and just overall better if you guys had removed the hardware and scales and just put the blade in the water solo. Wouldn't have probably caused as much overlap on the surface corrosion that was apparent on steel liners/hardware. Also would have been cool to see a higher carbon content steel, something that isn't stainless/partially stainless just for the hell of it. But overall very cool video, love these testing type of content videos so keep em' coming George and BHQ🤌💪

I really expected better testing procedures from Blade HQ; This is just another example of how easy it is to manipulate test result to fit your argument or sales pitch..
Just ordered a BR fin and bone in Magna Cut. We shall see for ourselves soon enough. One of the best kept secrets is where does BR source it's blades from and how good is the heat treat? This knife will not see salt water but it will see beef and pork roasts along with turkey. I did not have a good boning knife for the kitchen and I wanted one that would not take a lot of maintenance. I have good fillet knives and normally use my kitchen knives for butchering deer anyway. You need oxygen to really form the oxidation (rust) so blades should be exposed to air for a while after submersion.
after using it for about couple months, the edge retention seems to me be more akin to s35vn, i think itll be great as an outdoor knife steel, edc not really, i prefer high retention in edc
My fav steel is still a toss between lc200n or cts xhp.

Another reason they might've got rust on the spine, the abrasive they used wasn't new and had been used on carbon steel and then impregnated the magnacut spine. Honestly I'm impressed with the d2! I figured that would've been pitted and unfixable
Would have liked to see one other test. Sharpening. Could have taken the knives that lost their edge; and sharpened them to see how easy is it to get the edge back. Also, could you get it sharper than out-of-the-box?

For everyone saying 60/61 hrc And 63/64 hrc doesn't make that much of a difference in magnacut It definitely does!!
I was there in 1983, just a couple of years after the Saltair III opened, and it was in the lake! Love the channel, guys, but it’s not good for my bank account.

Seemed to be a lot of focus on the 'action' for the non-magnacut knives but the magnacut knife was a fixed blade.... Seems like a pretty poor comparison from that perspective. Seems like you'd want three knives from the same manufacturer with the various steels (shouldn't be had to come by these days) and the same style of knife (e.g., folders or fixed blades). Let's compare apples to apples, not apples to pears 🧐. Otherwise, interesting video....

Yes, maybe the composition of the base steel will be the same, but the heat treatment and edge geometry will matter more than alloy in any practical application and will vary between manufacturers. They sometimes vary between knife models depending on blade length, smaller blades tend to be heat treated to higher HRC.
Dont get too exited about the edge on edge tester ,got the pt 50 for my knifes. Had to cut a broken reinforced lightning cable so took my magnacut knife ,Actanonverba a100, and got to it, needed 3times at full force to get trough so tested for fun my cheap 8cr15 knive which goesnever below 400 as much as sharpen it and it cut trough like butter. Then tested all my knives on it ,was curious know, and the supersteels ,m390,elmax ,nitrov and so on failed despite being in the 200 to 300 in the edgeon measure and the ones cutting trough with one go and a bit of force where the " bad steels " , namely 420hc, 440c , 8cr15. , and 420. So ispend a fortune on that tester to get results in real life who have no rellation to it.
@retardno002

If you sharpened the knives yourself there is a good chance you're not using very good sharpening stones which have trouble removing material from the super steels. Your comment isn't the most eloquent but if I understand correctly you get better sharpness results with soft steels. Try a diamond plate for your super steels.

In order to test properly................You need to spray the salt/water agent on the blade and then let the blade air dry.......... and then repeat. Letting the blade air dry allows oxygen and corrosive agent to corrode the metal.
The D2 did super great with corrosion considering non-stainless. Black nitride all the steel. Corrosion is over valued. The edge needs sharpened enough just from use.

That’s more of a “office test” than a field test…..
There is not a more useless application for a supersteel than in an OTF switchblade knife. An OTF is a weapon, made to stab people, it just needs to be pointy and not even particularly sharp. Supersteels are to shine when the knife is used as a tool, to cut all sorts of tough or hard material repeatedly over a long time.
@nicehandsfeet11
8 ай бұрын
OTF work great for cutting tasks. They’re not just for stabbing. the dagger blade is very convenient for a lot of cutting tasks and you never touch the blade when operating so it’s safer and one-handed and ambidextrous.
People slept on maxamet. In real life ive found concerns about corrosion and brittleness to be overstated. I dont use my knife as a screw driver nor dive in salt water. Maxamet stays sharp wayyy longer than any of these steels bc it is much harder. Yall making it more complicated than it is.

first of all, 20cv is not one of the greatest giants in edge retentions 09:55 , second of all hogue is an outlier for an edge retention test because most manufacturers are currently heat treating magnacut to 60-62 and hogue has committed to 63+, which according to our friend and local expert Dr. Thomas, magnacut at 60-62 is going to have similar edge retention to properly heat treated D2, do that test again but with a microtech and get back to me :) - also to clarify my initial statement, m390 officially has a middling level of edge retention, especially compared to steels like s90v maxamet rex121 just to name a few..m390 is a giant in its corrosion resistance, and im shocked that despite being friends with Dr Larrin Thomas you all continue to act like 20cv/m390 is some edge retention titan....not that you will read this comment anyways
I found it
A blade might get dull faster if it is sharper.
It's Mickey's mouse testing, who cares if a knife is covered in salt. It matters for a divers knife, not much else. Try cutting grass bar stock and digging into sand that would be interesting.
