What I’d have given for a video like this 13 years ago when I was starting to get to grips with study level flight sim add-ons. Stumbling across pirated FCOMs on the internet and thinking they were gold dust. 4000hrs Airbus later and still love the job. Keep up the awesome work!

Haha, well thanks very much Al, very kind of you to say! It sounds like we both had the same "problems" back in the day; limited access to the internet and very little content covering this sort of thing for sure. Pretty much anything I learnt came out of manuals, off websites, or perhaps the odd VHS / DVD. I still have some pirated FCOM's kicking around on my hard drive haha XD Cheers again for the kind words! Much appreciated. I'm glad you got to where you wanted to be! All the best : )

@@tophatanimation8748 As also just a PPL I'd gather that with at least the Fenix A320 being based on ProSim and ProSim being usable in EASA certified FTD level 1 FSTDs (according to their website) I guess it makes a really great training tool, at the minimum when it comes to the systems? Since EASA FTD level 1 requires (among other things): "FSTD systems shall simulate applicable aeroplane system operation, both on the ground and in flight. Systems shall be operative to the extent that all normal, abnormal, and emergency operating procedures can be accomplished." Full FTD 1 requires quite a bit more of course and mostly lots of hardware. Overall to me it's still really amazing what's available today for so little money, at least in aviation terms 😉

Hi Top Hat, Haha, well I was a simmer for many years, before I ever flew and I’ve always felt that simming is a very enjoyable hobby in its own right (it’s nice to be able to relax and not have to worry about the CAA / FAA etc, no 5am starts either haha). Of course none of us would pretend that a home flight simulator gets everything right, but it’s often incredible what one can actually achieve with a PC flight sim these days! On the Minecraft point, I fear I’ve finally become “too old”, to understand the kids of today haha XD All the best : )

Hi vEldavisiz, I’m not sure whether this question was aimed at myself or the original poster? As far as I go, I prefer not to divulge details about who I work for etc, but I fly the Airbus in the real world, I’ve flown a number of members of the Airbus family over the years. So I’m not on the Boeing, but I enjoy flying it in the sim haha. Cheers, all the best! : )

Thanks very much once again AS! I'm really glad you felt like "part of the flight", that's certainly the sort of vibe that I try to create. It's such a shame that a visit to the flight deck is no longer really an option. The PMDG 737 is certainly a massive improvement over the default jets. MSFS still isn’t quite up there with X-Plane in terms of flight dynamics, but it’s pretty much on a par with any other civilian sim at this point (in terms of payware aircraft at least). There are some really nice aircraft options now, with the PMDG 737, Fenix A320, Just Flight 146, Leonardo Maddog etc. Cheers!

Great video. I missed it the first time it came up in my feed - I probably would have noticed it more had '737-800' been at the front of the title. Not sure what works best for titles for viewcount for you overall though, perhaps airplane model numbers don't appeal to a wider audience.

  • @IntotheBlueSimulations

    @IntotheBlueSimulations

    Жыл бұрын

Cheers Jarrod, glad you enjoyed it! Ahh, well I wish I knew the answer to that myself haha. For sure a nice simple "737-800 review" title works, if I publish the video shortly after the product's release, but sadly after about 24hrs, any review is old news and the KZread algorithm will kill off the video pretty quickly thereafter. At that point I have to get a little bit more "creative" with my titles haha (you'd be amazed what a difference it can sometimes make). Whilst I try and avoid going entirely down the clickbait route, it's sad to say that it's those sorts of titles that tend to work best. I'd like to be more principled about it, but at the end of the day, I put a lot of effort into the vids, so it's nice for them to be seen haha. Thanks very much for watching either way! Thank you very much Pascal, very kind of you to say! Are you using the Honeywell autopilot, by any chance? I was flying the IXEG 737 in X-Plane the other day and noticed that LNAV / VNAV can’t be engaged ahead of the departure - I subsequently wondered whether that’s a limitation of the Honeywell autopilot (vs the Collins unit). I’m not much of an expert when it comes to the 737, I’m afraid; if it’s not autopilot related, I’d imagine it’s something to do with the aircraft / airline configuration settings (adjusted via the CDU). I hope that helps a little? All the best! : )

Great video and such a great addon. I wasn’t really a 737 fan to begin with, but PMDG won me over with this one. Can’t wait for their 777! When you have multiple airways you can input just the airways on the left side and the aircraft will fill in the waypoints between them automatically. Need to verify that it’s entering the right ones of course, but it hasn’t given me any wrong ones yet. You can also enter the arrival transition FL on the descent page. Possibly under forecast iirc.

Hi Øystein, Thanks very much once again, glad you enjoyed it! I've always preferred the short-haul Boeing fleet over the long-haul stuff personally, so whilst I prefer the classic 73's, the NG is still right up my alley ; ) Thanks very much for the pointers! The airways thing I was aware of and indeed one can do the same on the Airbus. I tend to do it "my way" though, as it can have its advantages from time to time, when building up certain routes (the explanation is a bit long winded to get into here though). For sure though, either method is totally valid! You're certainly correct re the transition FL, I just always forget to do it in the NG for some reason XD Cheers once again, glad you're enjoying the 737! All the best : )

Hi Ethan, I use a 3rd party recording tool, which can be found here: flightsim.to/file/8163/flight-recorder I record the flight and then use the replay for any external shots that I wish to capture. Afterwards, I then edit the external shots into the video. Much like the in-built replay tool, the recorder won’t necessarily pick up the correct aircraft configurations, so sometime I have to manually set the flaps, arm the speedbrakes etc, before recording the shot. I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! I hope the above helps. All the best! : )

Haha, well it's an interesting point you raise Mark. Since my first ever "study level" 737 simming experience (the Wilco 737 in FS2004 - what a classic!), I've been using the AFT left fuel pump whilst running the APU (and that seems to be the norm from other simmers videos that I have watched). I had a real-world 737 pilot reach out to me on my video of the 700 though and one of his pointers was that they use the FWD left fuel pump when running the APU (I forget his exactly reasoning, but something to do with a scavenge pump). The APU will certainly operate in this configuration and I've no reason to question his suggestion (he has been very helpful - even sent me some real world 737 materials etc), so I ran with it. I can't categorically say that it's the right thing to do though. . . I'm glad you enjoyed the flight! Haha, indeed; I wasn't necessarily planning on picking up the 800 either, especially since I was a bit late to the party, but I wanted to make this video and in the end I couldn't resist ; ) Happy flying! • @IntotheBlueSimulations

Hi Jonas, My graphical settings are broadly as such: - “High End” preset - Pre-Cache = Ultra - Terrain and Object visibility sliders set at 125% (sorry, I forget the actual names of them) - Motion Blur = Off - Glass Cockpit Refresh = Medium - AI Traffic = Off - VSync = On / 60fps That gives a nice balance between graphical fidelity and performance. I only run at 1080p, hence the decent FPS / smooth performance. The things I’ve turned off / down are known to be famerate hogs. Lighting and weather can make a huge difference to the visuals in the sim; I spend quite a bit of time tweaking the weather / time of day for each of my videos. As far as FPS goes, that figure would be a little bit tricky to nail down in all honesty - it’s very variable, depending on the location, weather, addon etc used within the sim. I can get anywhere from nearly 100 FPS, right down to the sub-30’s. Typically though, I’m probably averaging around 50 FPS I would say. I hope that helps a little! All the best : )

Hello Michael, Thank you very much, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video! I can answer all of your questions pretty succinctly; what you were watching here, is an Airbus pilot, trying to fly a Boeing haha XD I did have the flight directors on, but the rest was probably a little bit “non standard”. It is normal to step through the plan I believe (indeed, we would on the bus). The only reason I neglected to do so, was for cinematic reasons (to save me switching back and forth between the viewpoints). I’m not sure what page the FO’s CDU would typically be set to; on the Airbus its typical to have the offside MCDU set on the F-PLN page, but I find the PROG page more useful on the 737 (so went with that). It is typical to start the chrono ahead of the takeoff, on both types. This was an omission on my part and I forever get to do it in the sim, since my brain goes into PF mode (and typically it’s a PM task) ha. As you can tell from all of that, I’m by no means an expert when it comes to the 737, but I enjoy the aircraft and it’s nice to fly something a little bit different in the sim. Thanks very much for the sub! Welcome aboard : )

  • @busdriver2011

It is perfectly normal to use this part of the runway for take off. The arrows indicate a displaced threshold for landing, usually to give obastacle clearance on landing. For example, the physical length of the runway maybe 2500m which is all available for TO, however it may be a eg 300m inset threshold (shown by the arrows) so the landing distance available is 2200m. Setting TCAS on the Taxy out is standard procedure, exactly where will vary from airline to airline.

Hi Thessalonician, you're most welcome! For your first question, I don't have much to add on top of what Stuart has already offered up. The arrows denote a displaced threshold = OK for takeoff, but not a useable area for landing. You're generally correct regarding TCAS. The SOP's I use at work, seem to be a bit unusual, in that we were turning TCAS on before commencing the push; we've actually just changed that procedure though haha (presumably to fall in line with everyone else). For question C, I'm not really sure I'm afraid. Sounds logical, but not being a Boeing guy (I actually fly the Airbus), I don't know what the usual procedure is. Some pointers for extra FR emersion if you'd like them (you'd probably never know them unless you were Ryanair) There's no real way of knowing them outside of the airline in question but every departure would have an engine out procedure and an initial Minimum Flap Retraction Altitude (normally 1000' AAL unless terrain is a factor). This would be set in the Minima window on the ground (I think it was something like 1360 in BHX?) The master cautions on engine start would be cancelled, otherwise the would mask an unexpected caution. We'd just about always use intersection C from that stand for departure (time is money which is everything to FR and the cabin crew would be super-quick doing the demos) At flaps up we'd go straight to VNAV typically and once cleared above the 6000' restriction at LUVUM, use the ALT INT button to remove the restriction/s (or delete from the FMC). LVL CHG wasn't used too much in a climb. FR didn't really like us briefing in the descent. It's a short cruise segment, but we'd do our best to set up and brief before top of descent. I wouldn't have worried about 5kts excess speed in the descent (the speed brake lever was known as the 'stick of shame' in FR!) Great CDA into DUB (managing the the descent/speed is an art in the 800). In reality it would have been RWY 28 on the day I guess? AB 2 may have raised an eyebrow or two on the flight deck on such a short runway. FR always do low (proper low) drag approaches, generally Gear Down/F15 at 4 miles, though for flaps 40 landing with a tailwind I'd have used 5NMs to be fully configured by the 500' 'gate' (technically 1000' as it was IMC). Otherwise though, miles better than I would have done before I was doing it for real. The airports looked really realistic to me (except very quiet) and the flight deck bang on (though suspiciously clean!)

Forgot to say, Ryanair use (or did when I left) Cost Index 6 which can lead to some funnies at lower cruise levels such as with BHX-DUb (like a Mach no. less than .6 which is the minimum that can be set in the speed window on the MCP and a decent IAS a little bit faster than the cruise one.)

Hi Welsh Rambler, thanks very much for the very informative post! Always great to hear from someone in the know. Haha, well who knows, maybe it was you who took me over to Dublin all those years ago! It's funny you mention the minimum flap retraction altitude / MDA setting, it's not something I was aware of until just the other day (we don't really do anything similar on the Airbus), when I saw your post and one of Flightdeck2Sim's videos almost concurrently. I'm not sure one would have made all that much sense without the other haha. Noted on the Master Caution. I'm not sure why that didn't occur to me at the time, but I've added it to my checklist, so hopefully I won't forget in any future videos. It's interesting, I've been picked up a couple of times on using LVL CHG : I guess I'm trying to fly the Boeing like an Airbus, which of course isn't ideal (and doesn't always work out well ha), but equally I'm conscious that I don't want to form too many Boeing habits, that I might then ended up taking to work with me. I'll try and remember ALT INT though, I often tend to forget it's there - ooops. Briefing in the descent is just a little concession for the videos. It's generally the same ethos in my company, but doing so allows me to "kill two birds with one stone" as it were, demonstrating the descent and filling in the gaps with the briefing. Haha, for sure a very shameful effort there on the speedbrakes! XD I think again, it's just a question of getting used to the 737; it seems to prioritise the VNAV path over the speed, in the Airbus it's sort of the other way around (and she doesn't like to go down and slow down). I'm sure it would have been RWY28 in reality yes, but I tend to go with whatever Simbrief has given me, primarily out of force of habit. I suppose I ought to be a touch less lazy and just change the runway selection to a more realistic one. Again, the configuration was based on Airbus / my company SOP's and not wishing to deviate outside of those too much. I must say though, I perhaps didn't appreciate just how conservative our SOP's are - gear down and not fully configured at *4 miles* you say?! haha Re autobrake: Again, I was going with Airbus-ism's. Low autorbake is used the vast majority of the time, Med occasionally. What is a typical autobrake setting in the 737 and what would you have used in this instance? I really enjoy flying the 737 in the sim and it looks as though it's probably quite a bit more fun to operate than the Airbus in reality haha. So thanks very much for the info, very much appreciated! I'd imagine working for FR must have been pretty tough going at times, so I hope you are indeed enjoying a slightly more balanced pace of living these days. Cheers and all the best : )

Hello Chris, It’s always a little bit tricky to get a “realistic” view on a 2D monitor, as you have to balance what’s in your direct field of view vs what would be in your peripheral vision. I use a 50% zoom level for most aircraft in the sim and I find this gives a good balance between the viewpoint and being able to read the instruments. You shouldn't have any master cautions for pushback and engine start. Might be a good idea to find out why you have them, and/or reset them if they are associated with any MEL items, so you actually notice if you get any problems during engine start.

  • @IntotheBlueSimulations

Hi Jesper, Yes, that was an error on my part - I forgot to reset the master caution ahead of the start (the caution was not related to an actual failure). Cheers for the pointer. All the best

@@IntotheBlueSimulations The thing is that there shouldn't be anything to reset under normal circumstances. Instead I would advice you to figure out why you have the master caution and configure the overhead panel accordingly. The system is there to advice you if you have any problems and there are two different types of failures, resettable and non resettable. In short resettable failures are associated with redundant systems, for example the AC packs, which has two controllers. If just one controller fails, then you will get a master caution that you can reset, and the light will only appear on recall. If both controllers fail, then the pack light will stay on constantly and cannot be reset. As per the QRH checklist instructions, the QRH is not valid for resettable failures. Try pressing recall before push, it should not light up anything!

I can’t really give any meaningful feedback on how accurate the software is Jesper, though PMDG are somewhat known for there systems accuracy - so it’s more likely pilot error XD The addon does save its “state” after each flight, so I wonder whether it’s not registering a full shutdown when I load it up again - it sounds like that might explain it. I’m an Airbus man myself, so I’ve already got enough FCOM’s to keep me busy already haha (though I did read through a brief overview of the Master Caution system on 737.org), but I very much appreciate the feedback and you taking the time to try and get to the bottom of things. The PMDG 737 has this value set in the CDU by default, hence why the aircraft was showing that I ought to switch over to QNH (this value can be manually changed, but I had forgotten to do so here). I’ve given it some thought Dave; honestly, as boring as the answer is, I think the default A320 probably best fits your description. Unfortunately, its a bit tricky to find something right in the niche that you’re looking for, since an addon will either be so basic, that you won’t be able to learn what you need to, or it’ll be moderately complex at the very least. The default A320’s MCDU is fairly simplified, whilst still having enough depth that you can learn the basics of setting it up (you can also simply set the flight plan up from the world map and it will import automatically to the MCDU). The autopilot, whilst a little bit tricky to learn initially, is actually quite intuitive once you get the hang of it and given that most systems on the Airbus are automated, you can learn them at your own pace. Being a default aircraft though, the A320 does have its peculiarities and shortfalls. Once you’ve gotten to grips with it, another nice bonus of the 320, is that you can move onto the FBW A320 mod, which has a lot more depth. Another great option, if you want a more “grass roots” jet, is the CJ4. I hope that helps a little? All the best! : )

That makes the whole sim much more manageable - I'm only running it on a 2080 currently. I spend a lot of time tweaking weather, lighting and camera angles in my videos though, those factors all make a huge difference in terms of how the sim looks. For sure to run MSFS in a reasonable fashion, one does need a half-decent PC, but I think you'd be looking at closer to the £1000 mark than £2000 (especially now GPU's are coming down in price once again). Decent peripherals etc are going to bring those costs pretty close to your estimate, but those can be purchased over time; for the vast majority of time I have spent simming, I was using a laptop and a fairly basic joystick ; ) It's not a cheap hobby, but then most aren't haha and I certainly enjoy it, have done for many years! Cheers and all the best : )

Hi JS, As I mentioned to Jon, I'm actually only running an RTX2080. I don't do anything in post-processing to smooth out the video (just about the only visual effect I add, is a little bit of vignette here and there), but I only run the sim at 1080p, so it's quite easy to get nice smooth performance (I lock the fps at 60). What you see in my videos, is very much what I see on my screen (again minus the vignette). I hope that clarifies things. All the best : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks, I'll be having a look at the specs, it's really interesting, because I am considering changing my entire PS5 system for a Xbox x, so I can play MSFS, but I also do need to get a new pc, so it's maybe worth looking into instead.

You’re most welcome Jon! I think both options have their merits, although ultimately the PC is always going to give the better / more flexible simming experience. Either way, enjoy! : )

Nice to see they’ve accurately modeled the uselessness of the wipers. They just need to increase their volume by about 200%.

Haha! Indeed. They're just missing the modelling of scratches on the windscreen, at least where some members of the Airbus family are concerned XD Cheers!
