    On the Shutter Speed: a good rule of thumb for the most natural motion blur is to have a shutter speed that is double your frame rate. So if you are shooting at 24 fps, then set your shutter to 1/50; 30 fps = 1/60; 60 fps = 1/120; 120 fps = 1/240. If you are shooting something with a lot of fast movement and you don't want it to be blurry, then increase your shutter speed further. Keep in mind, though, the faster (higher denominator) your shutter speed, the less light you'll get so you will need to compensate for this by opening up your aperture, raising your iso, or increasing the light of the scene.

    Totally agree. If people put their cameras in Aperture priority mode for video (as suggested at 22:45) they could run into issues since their camera will most likely break the 180 degree rule. So, if people are having issues with their footage looking odd (unnatural blur or strange banding is changing due to flickering lights) then the shutter speed would be the first place I'd look. Like Jake said, ideally you would be shooting in manual mode, but this is just something to note for those just getting started. Great video.

    With all due respect to the video’s host and guest, there are many things stated in the video that are incorrect or said in such a way to be misleading without further clarification. The progression of resolutions historically was not 720p to 1080p to 4K. 720p and 1080i were standardized at the same time under SMPTE-292’s 1.5 Gbit/s HD digital bandwidth standard. Then 1080p followed under SMPTE-372 & SMPTE-424 and UHD (ITU-R BT.2020) followed. 4K is a variant of UHD. The only camera types discussed in the video are essentially still photography cameras used for video and video camcorders (with the notable exception of Blackmagic which is difficult to classify). Many other camera types exist in church video production however. What about PTZ or SMPTE/triax tethered cameras, almost all with smaller than 35mm sensors? 24 (23.98) frames per second is NOT the de facto cinema speed. Film projectors would show each frame twice creating a temporal visual experience of 48 frames per second. Modern feature film cinematographers will dial in a 1/48th (aka 180 degree) shutter creating a similar 48 impressions per second temporal experience. 24 (23.98) without projecting each frame twice (or a 1/48th, 180 degree shutter in a digital cinematography cameras) may be susceptible to motion blur. 24 frames per second is NOT “similar to what the human eye sees in real life.” And is not “real smooth.” If thopse statements were true viewers could not perceive 30 or 60 FPS, nor would cinematographers dial in 1/48th shutter. Nor is 30 FPS “the old standard” and 24 “more and more the new” standard. 24 FPS (with or without a 1/48 shutter) predated 30 FPS by decades. It is incorrect “the only reason to shoot 60 FPS is to create slow motion effects in your editor.” A temporal resolution of 60 is the de facto broadcast and video production standard regardless of platform (internet, broadcast TV, etc.) in the United States. Furthermore slo-motion is not created by “fitting in more frames per second” it is created by displaying frames at a slower rate than they were acquired, which may or may not involve acquiring frames at a higher speed. The film term for this process is “over-cranking.” All of the statements in the video regarding lens focal length and resulting field of view assume one is shooting with a 35mm camera.... but the host and guest do not state this underlying assumption. If the camera’s imager size is anything other than 35mm the field of view obtained by the lens focal length changes and therefore the statements in the video is no longer accurate. Stating that “larger sensors take in more light” is an oversimplification. A larger sensor with a greater number of photo sites may be more light sensitive. A larger sensor without a greater quantity of photo sites will have a lower photo site density and therefore will not be more light sensitive. Additionally there are other reasons why a larger sensor camera may be less light efficient than a smaller sensor camera. All comments regarding audio EQ were specific to the mics the host and guest shoot with and how they place those mics. Other mics mounted differently may have different EQ needs. I could go on but all these problems after just seven minutes of content …

    Our church has been paying someone to come and set up, record, and edit our sermons for online. They have been great, but the expense is proving difficult to meet. The church owns a black magic pocketcam 4k. I'm new to the church and the only lense I've found is a laowa c-dreamer 17mm f 1.8. We have a teleprompter, a single tripod, but no lighting. We have limited volunteers to record on Sunday morning, but I'm contemplating experimenting with recording with the 17mm at 4k and then output 1080 to try to mimic multi cam.

    It was very informative to anyone that is clueless when it comes to this whole world of video production. I did want to add a note on the video editing software. I have used almost everything out there when in comes to video editing software. I will say the Apple products are the most intuitive when it come to some one with no editing experience. I am using DaVinci currently(Free Version) and for someone with a background in video editing that would be a good choice. I would say it is closer to Media Composer then the Mac apps. I am also using a 2011 iMac 27 inch model(base config) with 32 gb of RAM. So, you don't have to have the most powerful computer to edit in it. They do have some cool plugins but I just use my Waves stuff I use what I know.

    So, just started watching the video, so you may end up mentioning this, but PRO TIP: Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve is a FANTASTIC and FREE cross-platform pro-grade video editing software. It rivals Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere, but even if it only accomplishes 80% of what those programs can do, it is FREE and SUPERIOR to iMovie!!!!!!!

  • @mahall85

    @mahall85

    Annnd, of course you actually mention Resolve, LOL... good on you guys. :) IMO, you’re far too kind to iMovie, as it DOES have some limitations that pro apps do not have. IMO, if people hit that wall, then they should try Resolve, first... it’s FREE and is far closer to Premiere and FCPX than iMovie is. For a pro-grade app, Resolve is very user-friendly. Our church is in the process of making the jump from iMovie to Resolve, and early returns are positive so far!

    The best coverage is: One in the middle that's wide and unmanned (mounted or tripod). One in the middle that's a medium or closeup that follows the lead that's manned (Mounted or Tripod). One on each wing with medium to closeups that's manned (Tripods or mobile rig). One mobile camera that's manned getting supplemental shots either on stage or running around in front of stage if you have no way to do both wings OR in addition to both wings. I would always suggest putting operators on cameras if at all possible.

The a6000 series of cameras produce amazing video, the 6100 and up shoot in 4k, the 6500 and 6600 have 5 way image stabilization, the 6300 and up shoot in S-log for good color grading, they have great color, incredible low-light capabilities, the fastest auto focus around, amazing focus tracking, and they start in the $600 range. Just a quick clarification. Lenses are not measured in mm from front to back to depict their depth but rather by the distance from the convergence point to the sensor. This is why you will see different sizes of lenses with the same mm rating. Generally its proper advice to spend more money on your lens than on your body as well. Kit lenses are usually quite terrible. Primes are typically more "cinematic" because the quality of glass can be better since there are no moving parts (also making it cheaper) and they can be much faster (have lower f-stop values). The biggest thing I see with framing is people giving WAY too much head room like you said. I like very little headroom. I do sometimes give a "haircut" where the top of the head is just slightly off frame depending on if the moment calls for it which is a perfectly normal framing technique in the right situation. An important note on lighting especially with the 3-point setup. If you want good smooth, wrapping light without a lot of hard highlights then you will want to have a big light source as a key with some diffusion. This doesn't necessarily mean you need a big light, you just need something big to spread it around. Don't shoot an open light directly at someones skin if you want the light to look pleasing. Tungsten lighting will do more for your skin tones as well compared to LED's due to their color science. But LEDs are cool and cheap so that's hard advice to follow.

    You guys are a little confused on how the crop factor works (or at least you are in this video). 11:54 An 85mm lens doesn't act like a 170mm lens on a full frame camera, it acts like an 85mm. On a crop sensor with a crop factor of 2.0, it'd be 170mm. 12:05 A 50mm on a full frame doesn't act like a 25mm on the crop sensor, it would act like a 100mm.

    There are plenty of NLE's out there besides the three mentioned. There are consumer NLE's that do amazing work, cost under $100, and create videos with much less fuss than Premiere, and it's never ending subscription, and learning curve, and Davinci Resolve Free, which requires a beastly computer. Then there are the computer requirements to edit 4K. A $500 laptop will struggle.

    Would you recommend a Full Frame or 4/3 camera for recording a full service (~1 hour) in medium to low light at 4K?

  • @video2000ification

    Full frame has an advantage in low light but 4/3 works. The 4/3 camera has a universal mount (brands don't matter), more/unlimited recording time, more lenses and compact too. 4/3 image quality competes with 35mm cams. 12-40, 12-60 or 12-100mm is useful for 4/3

    Excellent video - I like the Lumix's that you covered. Also I didn't know you could sync vid/audio with FCP either. I have fallen in love with this software over the last 2 months. FCP has my vote over DaVinci if you are editing in a MacOS environment.

  • @Reyfox1

    "Good" is subjective. And with all the video editing software out there, you will have just as many suggestions. Premiere is subscription and you will never learn the software. You have to decide how much you want to spend. Many "consumer" editors are extremely good and easy to use. Pinnacle Studio, VideoStudio Pro, Vegas Movie Studio are consumer editors that can do what you want quickly and easily. There is even free editors, and I am not talking Davinci Resolve. Shotcut, OpenShot, and Hitfilm Express to name a few. Adding text to video is easy with any editor. Me? I use Vegas Pro 17 Suite with full Boris Continuum 2020.5, Sapphire plugins, NBFX and Ignite Pro. I also edit with Pinnacle Studio 23 Ultimate.

    I use Davinci and Proclaim. Export the Proclaim lyric slides with no background and lay the slides in along the video timeline, Typically a white font works for me. The flow follows the projection slide format I'd use in a live service with 3 or 4 lyrics lines on screen at a time.

    Why not Sony a6100 or a6400? Also...it’s better for the pastor to have the Parrot Teleprompter app on their own phone, so they can get their own timing down. and practice their message, announcements...etc on their own phone.

    Very helpful video for this times. We are planning to get new gear. But I have 1 question: What about Sony mirrorless? are these a good choice to use for church productions? I had my eyes on a a6400 instead of a G85 just for the more reliable focus. What is your experience with the G85 when recording a sermon of 30 to 45 minutes can I rely on the autofocus on a well lit environment? like a 3 point lightning set up. I can't find any info about this but only bad review about the focus so it got me scare and I'm strongly leaning to Sony just because of that issue alone. Thank you and keep up the good work. You get a like and I'm subscribed.

    Hey Eduardo, I'd say the Sony options are probably going to have the edge for that usage. It's true that a weak spot of the GH5 is the auto-focus, and Sony is very strong there. However, if you have enough light to run your aperture around f/3.5 or f/4 or so, especially on a wider lens, I doubt your pastor will move enough in the forward-to-back plane to step out of focus noticeably.

    I am Dr. Mike Hughes I have a couple of decades experience as a Broadcast engineer both Television and Radio. Just enough to let you know I have some background. My issue is knowing what equipment is available for me today to do the job. I am a minister for a small church, large building. What I want to do is put in a HDMI video distribution amplifier probably 4 outputs and then encode that as H.264 into my local in house router. My computer Macmini outputs HDMI at 1920X1080. We are not doing internet streaming. I know what’s wrong with you are you sick not trying to go on the internet. No, probably enough feeds clogging the internet now. We are trying to serve our people when at our worship service and allow them to get the best experience while here and see. We have a projector that doesn’t cover the auditorium that well. The in house stream would allow us to stream to iPhone, iPads and androids

    How do you export in the highest quality but not a huge file?

  • @ProfitandPixels

    @ProfitandPixels

    4 жыл бұрын

    H.264 is the standard exporting codec. You aren't going to export in a different codec without significantly increasing file size. What you can do if you have an exporting program like Compressor or Adobe Media Encoder is change the bit-rate settings to be higher, but that will increase the file size a bit as well. If you have a strong processor, you can try exporting in H.265, which is new and very efficient, but it's going to put a serious load on your computer and may take quite a while to process.
