The ULTIMATE Guide To Mixing Rap Vocals!
Музыка
In this video, I tell you the exact steps on how to get a clean vocal rap mix in FL Studio. We talk about acoustic treatment, EQ, compression, De-essers, saturation, and much more. The plugins I use here are mainly from Fabfilter but I also show you a couple stock plugins you can use to achieve the same effect. Let me know if you want me to cover vocal mixing for singing!

Something important is when you're doing frequency sweeps on your EQ boost it only around +10db, you're boosting it to over 20 so any frequency is gonna sound obnoxious, at that point you might remove something you don't want to remove.

That's a byproduct of training your ears as well. A lot of times people boost so hard because a 2 or 3 db difference is waaay to subtle for them to pick up on.

@@t.r.e4482 I found my self doing this. I would cut it too much and then not be satisfied. And then through experience, and everyone I knew saying "use ur ears" and not giving me any useful advice, I finally just sat down and really listened. I still have some ways to go to properly identify the frequency, but overall using my ears is most important.

Tip for recording genres like trap and pop: make. sure. you. deboxy. If your vocals aren't sitting right in a mix its most likely due to that boxy frequency taking up too much space. I personally like to use MannyM Tripple D, amazing plugin for that whole process. If they're still not sitting right though a universal fix could be to mess with your stereo image. Making your instrumental slightly mono and increasing the vocal"s stereo space can help wonders when its sounding like you vocals are "behind" the instrumental.

I wasn't gonna click but then I saw that you put *ULTIMATE* in all caps so of course I clicked
Its great to see you getting more technical in your vids, as i think is much important than just seeing the creative process of making a beat or things like that. With the accessibility of DAWS now days people think they can just slap some samples over a beat and they are done, but mixing and editing are so much more important.
I love the fact that he even told us what factory plugins can be used ❤
I just want to thank you, i learned a lot with your videos, and in one year now i can say I'm improving, and you are one of the main reason, thank you, again (If i mispelled something, sorry, I'm italian)
The one thing I've mastered. But good God Simon I can't resist a video.
Tip: if you want a more visual stock plugin for compression, instead of fruity compressor you can use fruity limiter and then change it to compress mode and the visual interface is kinda similar to fabfilter’s.
Great video man! i remember when i first started producing i wouldn't have had a clue about any of the plugins you where talking about, and what they would do and the reasons why we use them but 2 years later i actually fully understand everything your saying and im pretty sure i could mix rap vocals just like this :)
Love your videos ❤️. I just started my fl studio journey a week ago. I have no experience at all when it comes to making music but i’m learning so much from you. it’s so much fun!
You're a beast. I work out of StudioOne but the knowledge you've presented is easily replicable in my DAW. Nonetheless, thank you sir. I feel more equipped now
Yess this is the video I've been waiting for @servida. Thank you!
This is a great updated guide from your other video. Thank you, Simon!
Great video! I would recommend not being so scared of the low end. It's good to get rid of the low-mid boxxy sounds yes but a bit of low end below the boxy frequencies will give it a lot of body and presence so it doesn't sound so much like a radio voice. That low end to a vocal is just as important as the high frequencies. Also, with rap vocals it is very important to to emphasize the transients. Having clean transients can turn your vocals into weapons and can help it stand out of the mix without the need of a side-chaining. Also dipping a bit of the instrumental out where the vocals are, properly compressing the vocals and eqing them to the song will also eliminate the need for side-chaining which can in turn cause problems when sent to the mastering phase when it is further compressed. Oh one last thing! Sweeping for bad frequencies can be a bad habit and can take out the life of a vocal performance. I know lots of KZread producers say to do so but it's more so situational than standard. What you are doing when you are sweeping is making yourself AWARE of frequencies rather than them being an actual problem. You will hear that frequency if you point it out to yourself because you are training your ears in the moment to notice them. A better approach would be to understand how vocals work and eliminate frequencies that resonate. That's when you need to do a needle cut like that. If a frequency isn't resonating uncontrollably then it is more so a vocal timbre than a problem. The more tight dips you do the more wooshy your vocals could sound when your voice passes over those frequency dips. If you are just starting out and can't point those resonating sounds out right away, try getting an Audio Spectrum Analyzer like Voxenga's Span plug-in which has a free version. With the default setting on that analyzer it will actually show peaks wherever a resonating signal is happening. It's not good practice to always use visual analyzers but if you are starting out, it's good to see it so you can learn what it sounds like so you can point it out in the future with your ears. Once your ears are trained you can keep using the visual analyzer with your ears to quickly find problems and analyze them to see if they need to be addressed. Still lots of great techniques in here! Especially with the room set up. It all starts with the recording. Sometimes mixing just entails stylizing the vocals rather than actually mixing when it is recorded properly. Using Servida's video along with these tips, you can both make your vocals sit in the mix but also sound full and present.

If you change the “Zero Latency” setting to either one of the others, Natural or Linear does a better job of cutting out what you want out. Zero Latency let’s a lot of frequency through that you don’t want.
