I have been doing hardanger for 25 years. I learned to do it without a hoop, that supposedly it was traditionally not done with a hoop. All stitching is done on top of the linen. When finishing your threads, weave under, then turn back, go over the last stitch and work back through the stitches you’ve already woven under. This is a tighter finish for table linens and such that are used and washed instead of being just decorative. Another tip I recommend is to get a fine pair of hardanger scissors. These have smaller blades, so it’s easier to cut your threads. They are more pricy but worth it.

My mother started a piece when she was first married, somewhere around 1950. I found the piece in her cedar chest when I was a teen in the 70s and asked her about it. She told me what it was and I asked her,‘ Let me try Hardanger’ but we never got around to it. I am so glad it is not a forgotten art. I would love to try my hand so let me try Hardanger. Thank you for the giveaway and good luck everyone!

I studied in a convent school and our nuns taught us the basic Hardanger stitches when I was about 14 years old - I am 69 now. I never knew it was called Hardanger! so let me try Hardanger . You explain it so well and make it look so easy and that is what has encouraged me to start a Hardanger project.

So many people say that there is no interest in fine needlework in todays world. There is definitely interest, it has simply gone in a different direction. I taught myself to do Hardanger when I moved to Germany as it was everywhere! There was no one to teach me, no videos. I found an instruction book, learned from there. 2 years after I had taught myself, I began teaching classes to others. It was so rewarding to see the look in my students eyes when I knew they got it!

I did hardanger years ago before my children were born and now that they’re grown you’ve inspired me to pick it up again! Also we didn’t have KZread back then, and now that I watch so many crafting videos that are super zoomed in I realize why all the old ladies wore magnifiers when stitching and now I’m the old lady who needs a magnifier! 🤣

I learned Hardanger many years ago. I went into my local craft shop to buy some threads, but there was a long queue to pay, so I started looking at patterns. I saw a Leisure Arts book :- Teach yourself Hardanger. I looked at it over and over for about six months before I tried it. By then I thought I can do this. Because I had looked at the book so much I started and it was very easy, but it is the American version. I use the Hardanger fabric, though I now know I should be using a much finer linen fabric with linen thread to be authentic. Love your videos.
