THE ONLY CHOICE 😊

One of the main reasons why Suho was a trainee for 7 years was because he originally started out training to be a member of SHINee. However, right before SHINee was to debut in 2008, Suho injured his knee and he couldn't train for their debut showcase, so SM decided to debut SHINee without him. He ended up having to wait 4 more years, while SM worked on creating EXO and preparing the group for debut, before he debuted as the leader of EXO. (He was the first member to be chosen to become a part of EXO, which is another reason why he was made the leader of the group.) But, by all accounts, this worked out for the best because he became the leader, and as the other EXO members say, he was born to be a leader. If he had stayed a member of SHINee he never would have become a leader, because Onew -- who is the leader of SHINee -- is 2 years older than Kim JunMyeon (Suho), and at the time of SHINee's debut it was pretty much a given that the oldest member would automatically be the leader. However, 4 years later when EXO debuted, the rules within the industry had kind of changed and it was no longer a hard and fast rule that the oldest would be the leader. Case in point, Xiumin is the oldest EXO member and, yet, Suho became the leader. Being a trainee for 7 years isn't that uncommon. If you start to really look into it, you will find a lot of Idols who have trained for a very long time before they debuted. However, it all depends on how talented someone is or how much experience they have had before becoming a trainee as to how long they train. Some idols only train for a few weeks or a few months, whereas others could take years and they may be on the verge of giving up when the company finally decides they are ready to debut. And some trainees may never debut and end up leaving the company or industry. Unfortunately, just because you are a trainee doesn't guarantee you will debut. A lot of it is pure talent and luck combined with sheer dedication. Lay has NOT left the group. He is the only Chinese member who is still part of EXO. Lay was in all of EXO's MVs until the end of 2016, and he would have been participating in ALL of EXO's activities still today if it wasn't for the political issues between the Korean and Chinese government, which prevents him from doing so. He did leave SM Entertainment last year -- when his contract was up after 10 years -- but he is always the first to tell people that if EXO ever wants or needs him for anything he will always be there for them. Although, there are still several obstacles in his way to being able to work with EXO. Therefore, it probably still will be some time, if ever, before we see Lay working in person with the rest of EXO. Unfortunately, the political climate between Korea and China was only a little better for a short time. However, since this guide was made, China's Idol culture has become even more restrictive after the election of their new president. As mentioned, Lay's hiatus from EXO is not something he has chosen, but it's something that has sort of been forced upon him by the government. When China first began cracking down on their citizens working in Korea around 2016 -- as a political protest over South Korea's alignment with the U.S. and China's support of North Korea, etc. -- there were rumors that the Chinese government was threatening to revoke the citizenship of any mainland native Chinese person who continued to do business with a Korean company and lived outside of China. This rule would have prevented Idols, such as Lay, from visiting family and doing business in China, etc. The only way for them to avoid this from happening was for them to come back to China right away and stop doing business with their Korean companies. I don't know if this was really true or if it was just a rumor, but that is what I heard. Which would explain why some Chinese Idols don't feel any pressure to stop working in Korea because they have nothing to lose if they don't have family or a life in China or they aren't mainland Chinese citizens, etc. Lay's whole career is tied to being able to work and live in China and he is closely connected to the Chinese government, so he has to tread lightly when it comes to how he conducts himself and who he chooses to associate with, etc. He can't afford to be blacklisted in the Chinese entertainment industry. He is literally one of the most popular and biggest name celebrities, music producers, actors, models and a general spokesperson for almost everything in China, etc. Plus, he is the CEO of his own music label and idol trainee company, etc. For a long time, Lay was even discouraged from mentioning EXO by name in TV shows and interviews, but he always finds subtle ways to make it clear that being a member of EXO, and his EXO brothers, are always very important to him.

"Main vocal" is what we consider "lead vocal" in the West. In Kpop, "Lead" is second to "main". "Sub" is after "lead".

Fun fact. Johnny from NCT was almost in EXO. He trained with them. Johnny would have been the maknae. Some history. SM is the FIRST company of Kpop. They made the 1st group. "Idol group". Back in the 1900s. They made the blueprints to how to make groups. Both boy and girls. Soon after other companies came to be. It's crazy to believe they still have a lot of their groups still active. TVXQ, Super Junior, Girls Generation, Shinee, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT, Aespa and now riize.

I don't know if you're confused about this but in kpop main>lead>sub Main is usually the member with best technique who gets the most difficult vocal parts and usually gets a lot of singing lines such as chorus Lead is usually someone with 2nd best singing technique usually sings before main vocal, sometimes sings chorus Sub supports the Main and Lead Vocalists and generally gets fewer singing lines Nowadays these roles are not really given by the company, idols are expected to sing at least decently. Yes, you will discover that all the members of EXO are actors, and all of them have starred in K-dramas and movies and/or are stage actors. They didn't necessarily specifically focus on professional acting classes in order to become an actor, but all Idol trainees take basic acting lessons because they are public figures who need to have acting skills for their MVs, and for commercial and product promotions, etc. Most idols have a natural talent as an actor because it's part of what makes them well suited to be an idol, whether they decide to pursue acting in dramas or movies as a side project or not. As part of an idol's trainee program, they take lessons in acting, modeling, singing, rapping, study multiple languages, pubic speaking lessons, culture classes for how to conduct themselves in different countries and culture, as well as they often take special classes to highlight skills such as martial arts training, learn to play musical instruments, stunting and tricking, etc. Promoting as a group only takes up a few weeks a year -- on average they only promote their latest comeback on music shows and attend variety shows or do interviews, etc. to promote their newest comeback for about 2 weeks -- so in order to fill their time and continue to make money, all Idols have side projects, which means most idols also spend time as actors, models, Radio DJs, authors, music producers, songwriters, regular/main cast members on variety shows, etc. Their side projects also are part of their cross promotions as idols. Someone who doesn't know them may watch them in a drama or movie or see them promoting their favorite brand or product, etc., which leads to them discovering their group and music, or the person may be a fan of them as a singer and this makes them want to watch their movie or drama, etc. It's all about getting their name and face out there in as many ways as possible in order to drive sales and viewership of everything they are involved in.

It wasn't mentioned in the video but Lay writers, composes and produce his songs plus he plays piano, guitar and Chinese flute. Basically he can do everything, he is the most skilled member in exo.

I think you guys still a little bit confused about the company/labels thing. 1. HYBE label So hybe is a label, not a company (there are various company under hybe such as bighit, pledis and more). Some of hybe groups are BTS, SVT, TXT, leserrafim, enhypen and more. The boss is Bang sihyuk/hitman bang. 2. SM entertainment Their boss is called lee soo-man, not jyp😂 Their groups is like SHINEE, EXO, RED VELVET, AESPA, NCT, GIRLS GENERATION and more. 3. JYP entertainment Their boss is JYP. Their artists is like TWICE, STRAYKIDS, ITZY, NMIX, GOT7 and more Hope this helps😊

Chris was appointed CEO in 2020 but after the takeover debacle back in the Spring, Chris stepped down and became SM's COO (Chief Operating Officer) which is basically second in command to the CEO. SM's new CEO is Jang Cheol Hyuk.

main vocal / main dancer / main rapper is the person with the best vocal / dance / rap technique, they usually get the most line and sing the most difficult part and main dancer usually got solo dance part for 'lead' is the person with the 2nd best technique. for example suho. but many kpop expert said even suho is the lead vocal, but with his skills, he can easily be main vocal if he wasnt in exo.

Just like with NCT, there are multiple members that fill the main vocalist, main dancer or main rapper role. As this guide points out, EXO was originally split up into two groups -- 6 EXO-K members and 6 EXO-M members = 12 members of EXO -- EXO-K sang EXO's songs in Korean and promoted in Korea and EXO-M sang the same songs in Mandarin and promoted in China. Each member in EXO-K has or had a partner in EXO-M that fills the same role in their respective group. For example, Baekhyun is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; D.O. is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan (former member) was the other main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris (former member) was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead/other main rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao (former member) was a rapper/vocalist in M, (I'm not sure how Suho and Tao really work together -- because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist -- but because they are the last two they are put together.) I hope you understand what I mean. Honestly, I'm also confused about explaining it.

This guide is helpful but it gets on my nerves lol First Baekhyun is not the first male soloist in Korea to sell over a million copies he was the first at that time to do so in 19 years since Seo Taiji. Also nobody knows for sure when or why Baekhyun and Taeyeon broke up lol We the public were told they broke up but nobody knows if that's actually what happened behind the scenes. For all we know they could've dated for years afterwards and we not know anything. I wish someone would make a more updated version. This is like three yrs old. Plus I would've shown more of their personalities and talents for those who don't want to watch individual guides. CHEN, BAEKHYUN and DO are called the kpop Holy Trinity. Exo is the only group with 3 main vocalists (4th is suho often thought as main vocalist too). The reason why EXO are vocal kings because lead vocals can passed as main vocalist to other groups, rap line and dance line hace stable vocals that contributes to stable harmonization especially during their live performances. Their live performance are applauded and praised because it is better and different from the album versions.

SM is not Uber JYP company lol, both are different companies. In JYP Company jyp himself is the CCO (Chief Creative Officer) and the majority shareholder of the company. He’s in charge of creative decisions when it comes to his artists. Even though he’s technically not the CEO the CEO is someone different called jung wook and the artists that is under jyp company include the groups 2PM, Day6, Twice, Boy Story, Stray Kids, Itzy, NiziU, Xdinary Heroes, Nmixx, and Vcha. while SM Entertainment taps Jang Cheol-hyuk as its new CEO and lee sooman is the founder and former chief producer of SM Entertainment after being ousted from his own company earlier this year. and the groups under SM company such as TVXQ!, SUPER JUNIOR, Girls' Generation, SHINee, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT, SuperM, aespa and RIIZE, in addition to numerous non-idol groups and solo artists.

For make it easy JYP: The founder of JYP is Park Jin Young aka Jin Young Park, so the company is called JYP. (The acronym of his name) SM: The founder of SM is Lee Soo Man aka Soo Man, so the company called SM. JYP and LSM are singers. Along with YG, they used to be called "The Big 3" for the most promising entertainment company in Korea. So they are different company. They're not the same as Hybe, which has another company under their name.

Fyi, there are a lot of kpop groups who have more than one main or lead vocalist. Basically a single position such as main vocalist, main dancer etc can be held by more than one member in a single kpop group. This is the case for exo too.
