    I'm really glad it could help! Once you get the basics down about colour workflow then you can transfer those skills across different programs like Premiere Pro and even Resolve (if you're keen on colour check out Resolve!!). It looks like they've added a bunch of new colour management tools to Premiere Pro with the latest update so I might need to jump in and check that out and maybe do a little update to this course!

    Thanks for the tutorial! I always love watching these to refresh my memory on things I don’t use on a regular basis. Although I’m confused why you added the conversion LUT under the basic panel in the input lut. LUTs are usually always added as a look under the creative tab. I never fully understood why Premiere even has the input lut option because it’s adding it before your corrections and causes banding and other problems. I though you were only supposed to use the input lut if you plan to leave it as is?

  • @TutsPlusTom

    @TutsPlusTom

    2 ай бұрын

    Yeah good question, I was trying to address this in the video but maybe it wasn't as clear as it could have been. LUTs are used for a variety of purposes and you're right in that they are often used to create a creative look and that is done in the creative tab. However when working with ungraded, either raw or log footage, it's good practice to bring that footage into a corrected realm, for the colour space that you're working in, before moving on to the creative look. That's what the conversion LUT does. Think about it like a primer coat of paint on a wall before you get to the colour coat

  • @TutsPlusTom

    I've been shooting different flavours of log on different cameras for years now and I'm at the point where I have a pretty good eye for it (I monitor my shots in log / no lut) but I do still check my waveform monitor from time to time just to make sure I'm not overlooking anything. I know there is no waveform in camera but if you are using an external monitor I generally tend to aim for my subject / skin tones to sit somewhere around 60-70 if I'm monitoring without a lut then I just keep an eye on my highlights and shadows to make sure I'm not pushing them too far. If you want some really in depth, from the source information check out the exposure guide from Sony here sonycine.com/articles/how-correctly-expose-s-log3---a7s-iii---fx3---fx6---fx9/

    Hey no worries! Glad it helped. I actually grabbed those luts from the pack that come with DaVinci Resolve (which is where I do the majority of my in depth colour grading). It's free to download so you might as well check it out and have a play around with the grading tools there while you're at it and see how it compares to your workflow in Premiere Pro. It has in build correction luts for the majority of pro / consumer cameras that shoot log.

  • @VeganLinked

    @VeganLinked

    8 ай бұрын

    @@TutsPlusTom yeah I've been wanting to go to DaVinci resolve for years but every time I attempt it I get annoyed because I'm so comfortable and premier. I actually tried recently a few weeks ago and felt like I might have been making progress but I would have to rebuild the keyboard shortcuts unless I can find someone with premiere pro shortcuts because when I pick it in DaVinci nothing really changes so I don't even know why they have a premiere option there when it does nothing. I'm getting quite comfortable with premier though in the whole idea of it all. But the end result of what I end up shooting when I compare it to just doing no profile doesn't seem to be much better but I haven't gotten creative yet so maybe things will start to break when I try to get more creative... But I would LOVE to get away from a Adobe so I feel DR is inevitable. But I'm so deep in my projects right now with premier it's more likely to be a learning curve headache when I could have already got so much needed cutting done in premier. Having the right keyboard shortcuts would go a long way for me though to getting started...

    Hey, good question - basic answer is that there is generally a few ways to do things and not necessarily one right way. So yeah, the way you're going about it is totally valid and if that works for you then that's the right way to do it for your workflow. Basically just a few different ways to get to the same outcome.

    How would you go about doing this for a travel niche where youre using the same gear but you might be hiking in the forest and then end up in a beach, or the lighting is different. depending on the time of day or where you are. Is it possible to color correct one then mass copy it as well as adding a lut for color grading and mass copying it, or do you need to pay more attention since areas, times, lighting, etc can be vastly different. Or can you direct me to a video or someone who an answer this question? Thanks!

  • @TutsPlusTom

    @TutsPlusTom

    10 ай бұрын

    What I would do in this scenario is have 3x correction luts for your specific camera. In preparation for this travel shoot I'd go out and get 3 clips; one that is intentionally a bit underexposed (-1), one that is perfectly exposed (0) and one that is a bit over exposed (+1). Then from those three clips you can make 3 correction luts that effectively bring those 3 clips into the same realm exposure wise whilst also adding in your base saturation and contrast. Then once the travel shoot is done and you're grading your footage, apply your correction luts to your clips (using the either the -1, 0 or +1 lut). From there you can go ahead and apply your look (these could be luts you've created or ones you've downloaded) to your corrected footage and you should get a blanket grade across all types of footage from this shoot that feels all pretty close to each other. Of course there will be some instances where you need to go through and tweak some settings but I think this would be the easiest way to go about it. But happy to hear from others if they have a different approach!

    @@TutsPlusTom Thank you so much. It kinda sounds like you're talking about bracketing. I do photography. Only I don't use my camera when I film, I use my Iphone and I dont even know how to do that on an iphone. Not asking you to show me. I can look it up. However, I am curious if there are corrective LUTS for the Iphone 13. I cant seem to find anything regarding the 13, however I can for the 13 pro. Anyway! Thank you. @@Darewrecks415 check out the new Blackmagic Camera app for iPhone, it's going to give you a heap of professional videography tools in a free app and given you have an iPhone 13 it's going to allow you to unlock some great features there (ProRes!) - there's the ability to link your Blackmagic Cloud account and upload directly to Resolve (if you use it) for grading and you can import luts for monitoring. In terms of correction luts for the iPhone, most of the time the iPhone will be applying a look / correction lut in camera so you're not going to be starting from the same place as you would with something like log footage.
