    Another great video! With an ebike, I've learned to keep my battery in the bike while washing it to keep water from reaching the contact points in the frame. Thanks for the recommendation for the lube and the wash. A friend turned me on to Rock and Roll and I was glad to see that was rated towards the top but now I can use the best, thanks to you guys. I rode all winter and the amount of mud, dirt, ice, snow and other muck meant that I've been doing a lot of washing over my 233 rides in a row in 2023! Thank you for your great teaching videos!

    I just wanted to add that I think many people do full washes like this WAY too often. Like Macky said, when it comes to performance, it's all drivetrain and suspension/dropper. The rest is just for looks and ultimately, the more you wash it, the more likely you are to introduce water/dirt into your bearings and all the other parts that do NOT get along with contamination. I always grit my teeth as I ride past the wash station at the end of a Northstar day and people are just absolutely firehosing their bikes off with the nozzle like 3 inches away from suspension pivots. Obviously, conditions dictate washing intervals, but many of us ride exclusively in dry conditions and you can easily get away with just one comprehensive wash when the riding season is over and the snow starts falling.

On my current bike, when I ride certain places I get a little too sore. Mainly lower back. I've heard this could be attributed to reach and seat height, and/or other variables. It can also be attributed to the terrain. Maybe, you guys can do a video on this? Thanks!

    Great demo, I like your channel, keep the good stuff coming. But if I may: rinse the sponge more often to remove the dirt instead of wiping dirt around. It's wipe wipe rinse, wipe wipe rinse. That will prevent scratching sensitive surfaces. Car detailers even use two buckets, one for rinsing, one for soaping in order not to scratch the paint. But that's a little too much fuss I suppose.

    I have been a pro shop mechanic for 20+ years. I always advise dry clean only. Use brushes to remove the chunks, and rag off the rest, some lemon pledge on a rag for a final shine. Water is the single most damaging thing you can put on a bicycle. I have seen more damage done to 10,000 mountain bikes in one season with frequent washing than most rode hard and put away dirty mountain bikes would get in 5+ years. Water wicks into bearings and gets trapped, grease breaks down, rust sets in, and there you sit with a huge repair bill. Bike bearings, even sealed bearings are not “sealed” in the conventional sense. Bike bearings use low friction labyrinth seals or thin, flexible feather seals, when the bearing is spinning, they throw water off, but when water flows over a static bearing water wicks right in. Water does exactly the same thing to cables, the water wicks in and gets trapped, transports dust deeper into the housing than it would ever get on its own.

  • @midship_nc

    @midship_nc

    2 жыл бұрын

    I realize this comment is a year old, but you are absolutely correct. Water will wick up cables by capillary action and carry dirt with it, and as you stated most bearings in bicycles just have silicone dust shields which will not keep water out. Once grease is contaminated with water it's lubricating properties are cut by 90% and on top of that your bearings will oxidize. Even if I had a bike with full silicon carbide bearings ($$$$)which use no oil or grease, I still wouldn't wash it.

    Remove the brake pads from the brake calipers if the pads are organic or half metal. The surfactants in the shampoo are absorbed into the brake pads and when braking, a turkey scream appears from the underworld ;) After washing the bike with shampoo, an infernal scream from the pads appears. Therefore, before washing your bike, you need to remove the brake pads. )))) You can safely wash with shampoo only if the brake pads are baked metal...

    Great video, like all of your others I have watched. I love to wash my bike when it's dirty and muddy and that's just about after every ride. The mud I find myself in around my area is really bad. Bad because its mostly urban runoff and very slimy and you really don't know what is in it, so I can't in good conscience leave any of it on my bike. But after I purchased my second bike, the person who built it said that one should never wash off the bike!!! He said that water gets inside the frame and will corrode it. I was also told this by someone else in a bike shop. So I was really happy to see your bounce technique to get any water out of the frame. Thanks to you and Macky for all your great videos.

    I rode on average 5-6 times a week on a converted railroad line. Lots of gravel and limestone dust with the occasional muddy area at road crossings. The bike never got super dirty, but when I got home, I spent 5 minutes cleaning and lubricating the bike. A quick hose off, bounce the bike on the rear hard tail a half a dozen time to remove most of the moisture off the chain, then the bounce on the front fork the same number of times. A quick chain lube and good to go. Once a week check the fork air pressure. I averaged 250 plus miles a week, so every couple of weeks, I pull the axles, flush the bearings and repack. Never had an issue with Shimano XTR bottom bracket cartridge bearings with water intrusion. The Rockshox SID fork was disassembled prior to first use and a shock boot installed, so no grit eating away at the seals. Oh, and no Shimano chains, Sachs/Scram IMO is the way to go. Instead of the toilet brush for the chain, spend the cash for the Park chain cleaner. I used the toilet brush method, then followed up with the Park chain cleaner, and the amount of trash it removes will have you shaking your head. Spending that 5 minutes of cleaning and maintenance kept me from having a trail breakdown. Spend your time inspecting at home rather than repairing on the trail.

    Pro tip - rubber gardening boots. Protect your feet! Water pressure - no more than you'd use for your flowers in the garden. Dish soap costs next-to-nothing and worked just fine before expensive, bike-specific stuff came around. Same with wipe-down, cheap spray furniture polish (Pledge) works just fine.

    Great Video.. I've been using Squirt Lube for years, on all my bikes, MTB/Gravel/Fat/Vintage/City, its the easiest, cleanest, no chance of brake contamination, no detergent needed there is oil to get things nasty, like hands/clothes/tools, or bike, also detergent washes out bearings/cables, etc. I just use water, I ride in Michigan so some mud, I try to wash it when I get home when the mud moist.

    This might sound silly...... but using an old sock on your hand as a “wash mit” works extremely well. Never have to worry about dropping it onto the ground and as you wash your bike, you are intimately feeling every square inch of the bike so you can find cracks and dings much easier. Plus makes cleaning things like your hubs much easier. Give it a try! We live up in Michigan so cleaning bikes is pretty routine around here. You guys Rule!!

    Enjoyed this. FYI, soft-bristle brushes do exist. I don’t wash bikes often, but seems a soft-bristled brush would be preferable to using a sponge. Especially considering that a bike doesn’t have large flat areas that a sponge is better suited for. EDIT: I should have watched the entire video before commenting. There’s a recommendation for a soft-bristled brush later in the video.

    Tell us more about the ‘bounce test’ Syd. Where are you expecting the water to leak out from the frame?

  • @sydfixesbikes

    @sydfixesbikes

    3 жыл бұрын

    The bouncing is to get excess water off. The balancing on the rear wheel on some frames allows water trapped in the frame to drain and if there are any points that trap water in the frame (on Niners, for example, it tends to pool under the shock) that water will drain as well

  • @sydfixesbikes

    Some people claim you have to do this, but we never do. If it's a used chain, we clean it, dry it and then apply Squirt. If it's a new chain, we wipe it down with a rag, then apply Squirt. For a while, your chain will be dirty and black as it ejects the old lube, but after a few rides and reapplications, it'll be nice and clean the way it should be!

    As long as your aren't using a cleaner that leaves a residue (some car cleaners are both a "clean and shine" for example) then you're fine using water and cleaner anywhere on the bike. You don't want to pressure wash anywhere with bearings though as that can force water past the seals and, over time, ruin your bearings.

We do recommend storing your bike either upside-down or hanging by the front wheel so the bath oil (oil in the lowers) pools at the seals, keeping the seals and foam o-rings lubricated.

    @Syd Fixes Bikes - if this is a Wax / Teflon based lube... does it stay on the chain? That is the problem I have have with lubes like this in pass shedding dirt and then I have nothing on the chain protecting it. Will look into the literature on their page to learn more. Looking for more of a durable (eBike) solution for the chain/drivetrain than a KoM lube. Regardless, if there is anything else you can tell me, lemme know, and thank you! I appreciate all your videos!

    We have friends who do the whole-chain-in-molten-wax lubing method. Apparently it works well in that you don't have to wax your chain as often, but it is a lot of work. If it's working for you, definitely keep doing it, but it's certainly not required if you want to go for a easier (traditional lube) method.

    Nah, soap is totally fine on brake pads and rotors. Brakes get hot enough to burn off most contaminants, you just want to avoid contaminating then with anything oil based (brake fluid, etc) and avoid anything that leaves a residue (like car cleaners that "clean and shine").

    All pads will have a bit of movement, but it should only be a bit. Make sure your lock screw (the one that goes through the pads to keep them from falling out) is fully installed and tight and always use the lock screw instead of the metal pin that comes with new pads.

    I had to switch wax lubes (unwillingly bc my local shop’s been out of Wend! Wend Wax is my favorite wax chain based lube…next up is Secret Sauce, but will finish up my bottle of Squirt first). I tried Rock n Roll, which I liked fr a functional bike well-being standpoint, but disliked the dirt magnetic effect it had (concerned w the extra dirt on my drivetrain impact) and black transfer to my leg (which is really why I left oil based lube…greedy tattoo sucks!); neither of which happens w Wend! Then MuckOff dry lube, also nice on the bike & doesn’t get on me! Now Squirt, which I’m not so sure how good for my bike it is as my rollers don’t roll as easily in comparison to the other previously mentioned brands I’ve tried. What do you think happens as a result of Squirt use, if anything, to a drivetrain, fr a mechanical standpoint, w gummed up rollers?

    Great video. I would do this method for a bike that is very dirty with mud caked in it. For most rides I prefer to use a bottle of alcohol, spray on a paper towel and wipe. As the paper towel gets dirty, use a new one. For the drivetrain I spray a bit of degreaser on a brush and scrub the cassette, chainring and derraileur.

  • @sydfixesbikes

    @sydfixesbikes

    Jet washing is bad because it can force water into the bearings. Water can (and does) get into the housing occasionally but since you need to replace cables and housing regularly, it's not worth worrying about!

  • @mattgies
    @mattgies3 жыл бұрын

    Common mistake here. The last step when lubing a chain is to wipe the excess lube off the chain using a clean rag. Lube on the inside of the chain is what you want, where it can reduce friction of the rollers and pins. But any surplus lube that's clinging to the outside of your chain is just a magnet for dust and silt, which forms a grinding paste and wears out everything it touches.

  • @sydfixesbikes

    @sydfixesbikes

    3 жыл бұрын

    Actually, with Squirt lube, you don't do that. It's a wax/water emulsion so you put it on and leave it alone and the excess water evaporates leaving a nice wax film. With oil based lubes you do have to wipe off the excess, but we recommend doing so right before you go ride instead of after applying it, giving the lube know time to penetrate the rollers and pins.
