The ULTIMATE Electric Car Tyre Test | Testing Budget "v" Premium tyres on a Polestar 2

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Can you REALLY fit any tyre to an electric vehicle? To find out how much of a difference tyre choice makes to electric car performance we decided to carry out our own EV tyre test. In this video ‪@DrivingBex‬ takes to the roads of Derbyshire to test some well-known Premium & Budget tyres on a brand-new Polestar 2 executive saloon car. Each set of tyres were tested for a full month to find out what the impact was on the EV range, noise levels and handling.
Find out exactly how much difference tyre choice made:
Range vs. Performance: The Polestar 2 executive saloon we used has 228bhp and a maximum range of 297 miles on a single charge. Find out how each set of tyres impacted the range and performance of the EV. We also share some useful tips on how to get the maximum range from your EV and combat EV “range anxiety”.
Noise and Comfort: Do EV’s need tyres with acoustic technology? How much difference does a tyre with noise reducing technology really make to the cabin noise of an electric vehicle. We measure the cabin noise made by both the budget and premium tyres to see if specialist noise reducing tyres are worth investing in.
Safety Concerns: Safety is paramount for any vehicle, and electric cars are no exception. EV’s are powerful and have instant torque, so tyre choice is vital for giving you the grip and control you need. Find out how the Polestar performs when fitted with budget tyres and how it handles in the wet!

Who wrote this script? Having your radio on effects range?… it really doesn’t. Also the aircon will always give a higher figure while it gets the cabin to temperature but then calm down. Yes it’s a bit higher but not the drama you’re implying. It’s definitely better than driving with the windows down. Now that is really a drain on range….Perhaps stick to the tyre information?

Yes having the radio on obviously worsens range. Just because it's small enough for you not to notice it doesn't mean it's not reducing your range. Air con is definitely better than having the window down? Wrong. If you're in 5mph stop start traffic in a big city air con is definitely going to be worse. So it depends on the situation

Yes we agree it definitely depends on the situation. We were simply pointing out that any electric feature, no matter how small, will use the EV battery which is worth knowing for EV drivers wanting to get the maximum range possible :)

@@JohnnyDDaMan OK, you’re right of course. Having the radio on for 4 hours probably reduces the range by about 2 yards….🤦‍♂️ And the type of tyres will have zero effect on range if you travel at the speeds where having the window has no effect either….

@@edentyres unreal how bad the info was right out of the gate! Charging the phone at 15 Watts while cruising along the motorway using 38000 Watts means the phone will have no effect on range.

yeah, this was really badly written with some poor information on energy usage. These guys should definitely keep to what they know.

A good video with reasonable information, I will check out whether we have an ETS near us as our Polestar needs new boots… 👍🏻 However, enjoyment was somewhat marred, for me at least, by the unnecessary and sometimes over loud background music… 🤔

omg, the bad info right from the start! Charging a phone at 15W for a phone battery with 0.02 kWh capacity won't affect range in the slightest off a battery with 82kWh. Driving around on the motorway with an open window wastes so much more energy to aerodynamic drag than just running the aircon.

Great to see the choice etc, but which tyres are best for Tesla model 3 now, not many are given that T1 ref I see anymore, and new Tesla cars get shipped with Hankook tyres. Mine is 2022 model so very confused when inputting reg number in to search engines.

Why not compare the price? That seems pretty important too when doing a comparison like this. Also I would be interested to know if they roughly last the same amount of time. Or maybe the softer compound on the premiums mean they have a shorter life?

What is the ETS policy on repairing tyres with noise reducing foam inserts? Many tyre places will immediately decide they cannot be repaired even if the hole is in the middle of the tread, etc purely because of the foam, whereas others will simply lift the foam, repair the hole, glue the foam back, etc

  • @edentyres

Yes we do repair tyres with noise reducing foam inserts using an adapted technique. The same guidelines apply regarding the size and location of the puncture! www.edentyres.com/puncture-repair/

@@edentyres excellent! Even major chains have problems with this (heh, even many Halfords sites refuse to repair tyres with foam and prefer to sell a new tyre, and some even just said a swift No due to them being electric 🤦‍♂️!)

Annoying music and no information on the budget tyres at all, just an ad for Continental tyres.
