Tower is still one of the greatest openers to a debut album EVER!!!!
I still have yet to listen to Angel. But was a big fan of the Giuffria albums and the first HOL album.
Two favorite Angel albums: 1977 On Earth As It Is In Heaven (Best album opener in the Angel catalog) 2019 Risen (has great songwriting and an awesome version of The Tower) Least Favorite: 1978 White Hot 1979 Sinful The prog is gone, the rock is soft; two pop heavy albums that couldn’t produce a hit. Wild Card: 2016 Punky Meadows Fallen Angel Solo effort by Punky. Great riffs and solos throughout.
I love Angel! So glad to see them getting some credit on here.
Still listen to Angel 😇 Fantastic band & dig Angel 😇 City as well 🙏 Keep on rocking Gent's & Doll's ✌️😎

So I checked out Tower and it's pretty good. Wasn't crazy about the spacey noises early on. The vocalist sounds like one of the guys from Triumph.
I can't stand the way he pouts! because he might not be pouting for me! Hah, pouting for you? Hah! Punky Meadows? Pouting for you? His hair's so shiny and it's done real nice! (Zappa is my first exposure to Angel's existence...)
I listened to Angel because of the KISS connection, being on the same label and magazines of the day, liked a lot of their stuff. Remember seeing Guiffria on Mtv, but never listened to them of House of Lords Fun show

I drove all my friends crazy raving about Angel back in the day. The first two are always my favorite for the proggy arrangements and incredible analog synth and piano from Giuffria. The production on those albums is perfect - huge and ethereal like you're soaring above the clouds. It's obvious that Casablance gave the order to write pop arrangements and reign in Giuffria's prog excursions. On Earth... is still pretty decent but wow, that tinny echo-y production! I still like the rest because it's Angel ("Winter Song" is a must-play every holiday season) but I think Pete nailed it -- the early albums were a bit too late, would have slotted perfectly into 1973-74... while the later albums were a bit too early, would have gone across better in the 80's. I never checked out Giuffria or House of Lords because I already had a bias against 80's music... 3 of my favorite 70's bands turned into something I didn't like in the 80's (Yes, Rush and Chicago) and I was so turned off by most 80's music that I mostly listened to blues, Irish traditional music and a handful of metal bands.
Thank you. Steven/ Simon and PETE, another wonderful Saturday afternoon of fun !! 🍻/ music 🎶/ 😂 laughing 👍💯

Not long ago I listened to the soundtrack of Flashdance (Don‘t ask why), when there was a song called „Seduce me tonight“ by Cycle V, and I thought I know this voice. I looked up the band and it really was Frank DiMino singing. Not the greatest song in the world but a rather distinctive voice. @Steven: I also like Martin C Strong‘s Rock Discographies; @ Simon: Sinful is also my favourite Angel album, and this despite the fact that I can recognize that it is musically not Angel‘s greatest piece of art, but it makes me feel so good, because we‘re wild and we‘re hot!! Sinful is, by the way, also one of the favourite albums of my school days. … and … I was able to design my name (both first and family name) in a way that I could turn them upside down - Angel-style.

Great Fun Video ! There were UK Pressings but mainly Inports ! If the Angel, Sinful Album cover was anything to go by there was a larger audience that liked Punky! A Dancebeat Song by Meadows and David Essex might have got Angel their deserved fans in the UK. Great Fun Video !

Angel was/is incredible. The Tower alone trumps any song in this whole discussion.

Best HOL Album for sure!! Rock Bottom, These are the Times, SOS In America, Million Miles and I'm Free are all Killer Tunes!! This was the fave of 2006!! They've done some really good stuff since but after Chris left to join Dokken they haven't been the same...too mellow and too many keyboards, being too prominent...for me anyway. Jimi Bell seems a bit too stifled he needs to cut loose (like on the aforementioned tunes). Keep Rockin' !!!
Can’t wait for this ❤
I'm fairly new to this universe. First got into Giuffria (a band name that's this difficult to type or say must have worked against them) half a year ago, and I adore those albums; I'm a huge fan of grand keyboards! Gregg is becoming one of my favourite players. Also, Eisley is such a fantastic singer, and as Steven says, The Lost Tapes is worth looking up. I've been picking up House Of Lords albums when I've come across them, and I really like the debut. Lastly, I've been eyeing the Angel box for a while, and finally decided to order one last week. It's expensive - but for the amount of content, it's not yet too bad.

Well after listening to half a days worth of AOR, here I am. Now disclaimer, I only got up to Precious Metal so far. Favs: Angel - Angel is by far my favorite here. Discoverig that randomly one day was fantastic, Tower is absolutely mindblowing. Now I had a couple choices for nr. 2, and in the interest of variety I'm going with House Of Lords - The Power And The Myth. Heard it for the first time last week and it's pretty fantastic, I guess because it's the least AOR-y of the House Of Lords albums :P Least: House Of Lords - Cartesian Dreams: I feel like this is all of their worst material stuffed into one album. Angel - In The Beginning: Here's my equivalent to Simon's dislike for The Power And The Myth. This doesn't just sound nothing like Angel, it doesn't even sound good at all. Wildcard: Angel - On Earth As It Is In Heaven: I like the mix of poppy and rocking stuff they get on this album.
The Tower say no more 🤟💯💯💯
♥️ Live Without a Net
Dont think Ive actually heard any House of Lords so just played a video at random called Harlequin. Superb! May even have to dust off an old Angel album.

Good shout on Risen Drew, that was an unexpectedly solid comeback after all these years.
Welp, I just listened to "Tower" per your suggestion. Mid-70's Zep, Queen, Rush, Uriah Heep, Styx all rolled into one. I must be getting old. I would have eaten this like cake in my teen years but now... I prefer low-key Free and Robin Trower musings. I've gone all bluesy in my latter days but I can still see the appeal this has for our more active seniors!
@RickNBacker

I DID eat this like cake! First heard Tower on WBAB-FM on Long Island, made the hair stand up on my neck!
Favs - Angel Debut & Helluva Band - nearly went with On Earth as it is in Heaven because that has Cast the First Stone, but on balance I think the first 2 Angel albums are prime Pomp rock. I absolutely love Pomp rock and abslutely love these two. Least Favs - Angel In The Beginning - its not really Angel nor is it Giuffria or House of Lords - too Led Zeppy for me, and they've never been a favourite of mione. Its ok but the least good of all the albums under consideration. I really felt like doing a Mr Simon and saying that I've only 1 least fav but if I had to choose a second it would be- Giuffria - Silk & Steel -. The only reason I've picked Silk & Steel is because its not quite as good as the excellent debut and isnt quite as good as Giuffria 3 or the first House of Lords. On another note anyone else think that Eisley sounds like a mash up of Meat Loaf and Steve Perry?.... just me then? WildCard - As I'd never heard the vast majority of House of Lords catalogues I'd like to have them all as my wildcard, as theyre all really really great hard melodic rock albums. However if I have to choose 1 I'll have to go with their most recent album Saints and SInners - much to Mr Steven's chagrin no doubt. My reasoning for it though is that I just couldn't pick any of the first three nor the post Gregg , however SS with Mark Mangold on keys seems to me to have tied their sound back to Angel, Giuffria and Gregg era HoL, with the guitar and vocals keeping up the post Gregg ness - so my rationale is if you like Saints and Sinners there should be no reason to not really like any of their or Giuffria's catalogue. Oh and James Christian still sounds absolutely fantastic on it. Just a note on today's picks and my thoughts on the three bands and offshoots generally - I didnt dislike anything in the house of Lords catalogue when I listened to them all, the latter albums did start to sound similar to each other and New World-New Eyes is probably the weakest, whihc may be why they changed things around for Sanits and Sinners? Because I've only just this week listened to the catalogueI haven't grown with House of Lords, or they with me, so I'm looking back over everything as a whole, and as I mentioned above that I love Pomp, I love Pomp because I love the mixing of prog and hard rock which means organ and synth solos, such as those Power & Myth and Saints and SInners. I do absolutley agree that Jimi Bell is a fantastic guitarist who really shines on all the HoL albums. As far as the offshoots, DiMino and Meadows' solos are nearly Angel albums - much more so than In The Beginning. I listened to Dirty White Boy on Deezer and agree its pretty good but will need to seek out the others except for Heaven and Earth - Stuart Smith on guitar who went on to play in Steve Priest's Sweet , also Joe Lyn Turner and Glenn Hughes were on vocals on one of Heaven & Earth's other albums. And finally (at long last I hear you cry) I also have that Great Metal Discograohy book as well as the Great Rock DIscography books that it was a spin off from, and I also spent hours going through them in detail, meaning I am just as big a music nerd as both Steven and Pete.🤪😜😁🤨🤔

@@scottwalker5275 Good to know that some of the music we talk about strikes a chord. The willingness to investigate is what it's all about!
I haven't heard this band in ages, I remember scavenging some of this and there are albums I like from each of the three despite the differences. I'd say my favorites are still the first two albums, because just looking at the tracklists I'm waiting for Mariner, Tower, Dr. Ice and Fortune. Right around the same time I got into Uriah Heep I was temporarily addicted to the keyboards here. Wild card is Silk and Steel, which I clearly remember being the better of the two Giuffria records despite being hyped about Craig Goldy on the first (big Dream Evil fan here). Now, could be unfair to throw around some of these as least favorites because I haven't heard every record but- the third Angel record and the first House of Lords really didn't do much for me, as I never really revisited those like the others. I remember Sahara and the griffin one being good, but the first was a little bit of a sleeper agent... I need to catch up on the last couple of Angel records.
Settling down with a bottle of Double Dragon to enjoy this one.. I like House of Lords, but not hugely familiar with earlier works, so should be interesting! Faves: "House of Lords" and "Cartesian Dreams" Least Faves: "The Power and the Myth" and "Big Money" Wildcard: The Angel debut.
Hey guys, back again having finally listened to this at work last night, hugely enjoyable as ever, and great to see those wildcards, especially Stevens but hey, if you're going to cheat, do it in style. I too have never managed to find the BUX album ( which also features Ralph Morman on vocals, later of the Joe Perry Project, obscure fact fans) but it is on KZread and, like Steven says, well worth a listen. Again, surprised the WHITE SISTER debut didn't get mentioned (I don't think) given that Mr Giuffria produced it and played on it (a bit...) Can I also echo Stevens wish for a show highlighting bands in the early 90's that fought against the navel-gazing, plaid-shirt wearers, and the nu-metal wave that was to follow. I thank you...OK, time to pomp off home (see what I did there.. ?) Cheers til next week!

Thanks Iain. GREAT post (and pun!). I would have mentioned White Sister (I was listening to that just last week) but thought I'd hogged the talk time enough!! Cheers!
Hey fellas, OK, haven't listened yet, but am just back home and am going to put my choices down. As Mr Giuffria seems to be the main link, I'm going to focus on his output, although it looks as though all of House of Lords output is fair game which would make my bottom 2 choices much easier, as their post GG output has been patchy to say the least.... But here goes... Top 1 ANGEL Helluva Band Top 2 HOUSE OF LORDS S/T Bottom 1 HOUSE OF LORDS Sahara Bottom 2 GIUFFRIA Silk & Steel (Even though I like both of then) Wildcard - WHITE SISTER S/T but if the WS album isn't allowed, I'll change the wildcard for the GIUFFRIA debut! Bets hedged! Looking forward to actually listening to your views, probably tomorrow. I have a bottle of Old Hooky lined up waiting...
This could be very interesting - the albums cover a lot of sub genres: Pomp version of Angels vs Glam power-pop version of Angel vs Pink n fluffy Giuffria vs Hard rock version of House of Lords vs Prog version of House of Lords vs Melodic rock version of House of Lords.
I just want to give a shout out to an album no one seems to know exists: Nothing Is Sacred (1998) by Stream (also released as Chasin' the Dragon (2002)). You'd expect a band with David Glen Eisley backed by Bob Daisley and Eric Singer, in addition to band leader Peter Scheithauer(?) would get some attention. Maybe not in 1998... Chuck Wright also appears on one song on the album.
@TranquilityFireReid
Жыл бұрын
I have never been able to get a physical copy of the Stream album. Good to see it getting a mention. Thanks!
May have known (but certainly hadn't remembered) that Fergie Frederiksen and Ricky Phillips were in a line-up of Angel that lasted approximately 45 seconds, so on that basis I can say that my favourite album in the Angel family tree is...Toto - Isolation. There, that was easier than I thought (On a more serious note, far too much listening to be doing based on this episode, but if that G-band (arsed if I'm gonna try and spell OR pronounce it) are in any way 'Magnumy' that seems a good first port of call!
Love Jimi Bell. Although he says he’s from CT, he’s based there but isn’t he originally from the Albany area? We used to see him in the clubs there in the 80’s in bands such as Bell Attack. Even back then he already had that barely touching the strings speed picking style down pat. OK Sinful is great, probably one I’ll reach for to play too loud in the car.

Hi guys, just to warn you, won't be going live as I'm out with the family, but will listen asap after that as we are talking serious fanboy on my part!!!
I have never, knowingly, listened to Angel...but will now. I remember Guiffria being promoted in the 80's and I didn't get along with their first album, hence I never really picked up on House of Lords. I have commented before that image and budget has a lot to do with breaking bands and perhaps this is the real story here? I would also add that as much as I love melodic rock, those who write stand out albums/have outstanding catalogues are not easy to find. There's a lot of good stuff but they all tend to come from the same place and you have to dig to find the real gold in the genre.
Never heard one song from any of these bands but still a top listen. How do you do that. Anyway- off to purchase the Dooble Brothers disc...

Ha! About to write my comments/choices and it's going to be my wildcard - not sure if that's cheating or not!
I'd take a minor issue with one of Steven's comments. I think Pomp Rock was an almost completely American phenomenon. Pomp is the first American incarnation of Prog. I could be wrong but I reckon the difference between Pomp and Prog is down to drugs. Not drugs being taken by the bands but by the audiences. Prog in the UK c. the early '70s was played mainly to mildly/tremendously stoned hash heads in afgans or ex-army greatcoats. I doubt that would fly in front of rowdier American audiences with a much greater percentage of beer in their system. Hence Pomp's adoption of more concise, hook laden songs.
Jimi Bell is from CT as is James Christian. Jimi has been in a ton of bands in his history. He is also currently in the band Autograph as well after their original guitarist retired and also a Deep Purple/Dio/Rainbow/Whitesnake tribute band called Beyond Purple. Jimi was also in the Michael J. Fox movie “Light of Day” with a tiny part alongside Joan Jett who was MJF’s sister.

Also Trent Reznor was in the new wave band "the Problems" in the film. I've always had a soft spot for Light of Day; besides the melodrama it feels somewhat more authentic to the 'Real' local musician experience. Very few are going to make it ala 'Rockstar's Ripper, Owens tribute; most will slave away with a 2nd job and poverty around the corner.
Howard Johnson is the real champion of the ANGEL story in Kerrang!.. He was reviewing all the albums in the early issues of the Magazine and kept their name out there. Helluva Band is as good as teh first IMO. On earth is a PHENOMONAL Transition album and underrated! If you don't get why Sinful is so amazing you are not accepting it for what it was supposed to be. It succeeded and actually went above and beyond what they set out to do! Out of the later stuff, "Silk and Steel is tremendous and a shining gem and Demons Down is right up there with it.
Not what I expected when this first came up after listening to albums I haven’t listened to for many years my favourite 2 ended up as Angel On earth as it is in heaven and Giuffria , Giuffria Least favourites House of Lords The power and the myth, and Precious metal Wildcard as House of Lords missed out with favourites they get the wildcard with their debut album.😊

Because of House of Lords debut, I learned about Angel and Giuffria. My favorites would be House of Lords, I still enjoy it a lot and The Angel debut. My least ones would be Silk and steel by Giuffria and House of Lords Power and myth. My wildcard is the guiffria and Demons down by House of Lords. However, I still listen to all these albums.

Agree Lazaros. A very similar journey and choices to mine!
Would be good to do something like this on Bruce Dickinson but remove the maiden and focus solo and Samson.
Stephen fully agree on Frontiers have to be selective
Three band I know next to little about although I have heard some HOL albums so can comment on those. Demons Down, Cartesian Dreams and Come to my Kingdom are all good. Have to agree DIG is a fabulous album.

Going to see angel with the dweet at the end of the month in ohio
The new House of Lords album is ok, previous one not so much. Of course the debut and Sarah are great. But Cartesian Dreams, World Upside Down, Big Money, Precious Metal, Indestructible, Come To My Kingdom are really good. Too bad everyone wants to just know them for the past.
