I wouldn't call it a Huey. Venom is quite a different beast. Same engines as the UH60, the 21 inch stretch, completely beefed up airframe, the rotor gearbox is a freaking work of art, the computers/avionics are really something to see on the racks, and the tech in the cockpit is light years ahead. It's apples and oranges, but this aircraft is on par or better than the H-60 for the mission set.

The reason the marines love this guy so much is because of the common drive system with the AH-1Z cobra. This makes training, logistics, and obtaining spares so much easier when the drive systems are pretty much identical. Is it the most "powerful" helicopter in the world... no. But its got a great proven track record and an awesome company backing it. Now a video talking about the effectiveness and strength of UH-1Y's and Ah-1Z's working together in combat could make for an impressive "power" video.

As a retired Marine LtCol infantry officer with 3 years in combat, I call mostly BS. There is no doubt that the new Huey is far more capable than those used in Vietnam and more capable than the CH-46 we used in Vietnam. But times have changed and despite all of the bells and whistles added to the current Huey, it is still just as vulnerable as the CH-46 we had in Vietnam to ground fire. A hot LZ in Vietnam is no different than a hot LZ today. And I call BS on the use of the Huey as a "gunship" except in a situation where there isn't any enemy opposition. It's primary mission is to deliver Marines into safe LZ, to evacuate killed and wounded, and to deliver resupplies to Marines. It is not a helicopter to employ in active combat where there is enemy ground fire or anti-aircraft missiles. It cannot survive in those environments just like the CH-46 couldn't survive in those situations in Vietnam. If you want a helicopter to operate in a hostile environment, then you need something like the F-35 stealth and electronic warfare technology in a helicopter in addition to defensive weapons against missiles besides the flares which are not effective and are useless against radar / laser guided missiles. Don't get me wrong. I served three years in combat using helicopters and today's helicopters do have better electronics and some defenses than we had in Vietnam, but it doesn't have any any more defensives against ground fire in a hot Landing Zone. I really hate these videos that suggest that helicopters today are less vulnerable in combat than what we had in Vietnam. Today, they do have two engines, they do have some Titanium protection of critical components, but the can be shot down just as easily as they were in Vietnam. The Taliban shot down our helicopters with RPG's in Iraq and Afghanistan. Think about this. Israel has the Trophy System that detects incoming missiles and destroys them before they can hit the tanks. Why do we not have the same system on our troop carrying helicopters?? Our country has impressive technologies, but there are other ally countries that have even better technologies. We should negotiate to incorporate that technologies into our military. And we have done so, but not to the extent that we should.

And can be used in conjunction with coordinating between those Cobras while they fly overwatch during extraction and insertion.

Very interesting comment you made. Just curious, have you operated with MEU ACE Venoms? The fact you don't believe them to be a capable gunship is...strange. And the reason the Trophy System isn't onboard transport birds is because its simply not realistic. The dynamics of the ballistics of that system on a rotary platform makes me believe you either are not aware of either the weapon system or the aerodynamics of a helicopter....or both. You statements and questions kind of make your claim of being a LtCol a bit suspect honestly. It's just that your entire statement seems very...uninformed.

Trust me, you'd rather be in a tank than be in a helicopter in combat. Helicopters are usually most effective against poorly equipped insurgents from a poor country. If you were asked to take a helicopter into a battlefield against a real army, don't expect to ever return. Planes and jets are the real air superiority.

  • @angrysocialjusticewarrior

@@CobaltLobster Depends on where the battle would happen. If it were the US trying to fight Russia in Eastern Europe, A10 would perform poorly and get shot out of the sky before doing anything effective. If it was Russia trying its luck on US soil, A10 would do well against ground troops (assuming those troops are not in built up cities or urban areas). Thing is, A lot of weapon innovations that were effective in the middle east were effective because it was the middle east, not because they were actually good. Like Drones. Effective in the middle east, but won't do much against a real army. Lets just hope Russia, US, and Israel come to their senses and withdraw there troops from the countries they invaded and pay reparations to the countries they destroyed (Ukraine, Afghanistan, Libya, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, etc).

The whole thing could be a lifting body, with the fans contained and in counter rotation to eliminate adverse angular momentum. I suppose with AI it could smoothly operate along a domain of lift and speed, and be armed in a way to shred or support ground operations. Add a little stealth for versitility.

Same reason the B2 is still the best bomber even though it's 30+ years old no one has made anything better. You could count the V-22 as being better, but most put it in it's own class and it has it's own issues with crashes, to play devils advocate. The CH-53K has a better payload, but yeah otherwise this is still one of if not the best utility helicopters as it's a jack of all trades but master of none, kind of like the F35.

This Huey is not the kind that flew around in Vietnam.. Its a totally different machine. There has been lots off different versions off it over the last 60 years. Put one off these next to a UH-1B and you will see they are very different.

How effective will the Wire strike protection system be when you place a 360 thermal camera system in front of it.... You have effectively made the lower protection system completely redundant, might as well just remove it and save yourself 16lbs
