Truly was an ugly win. With Jeff George being the starter in his second year, he couldn't grab into Jon Gruden's West Coast offense. In that year, Jeff has said he ignored the off. coordinator and run his own plays on 3rd down. Gruden pulled Jeff and the Raiders to an 8-8 season. The following season, Gruden and the Raiders made a trade to get future MVP in Rich Gannon.

I remember this game vividly...fell asleep on it with my Raiders down 6-0. Woke up just in time to see Wade "Deadpool" Wilson's bomb to James Jett. It was an atrocious game to watch live...just awful. Thing is, the game in 2000 wasn't much better...it was 6-2 until Rich Gannon threw a TD to Andre Rison with about two minutes left to win 9-6. Raiders and Chargers played their share of those games during the 90's. 9-7 in San Diego in 1991. 12-6 on Monday Night Football in 1995. 12-7 in 1993. Definitely not the 80's shootouts during the Plunkett/Fouts days.

@@BatmanPops You act like he's the worst QB in the NFL. If he stayed healthy, he could've been on the same level as Alex Smith. He also had to deal with a coaching staff (Philbin) who didn't let him audible at all, on top of not letting him use his running skills. I'm not saying he's a top tier qb, but he's capable of getting a team to the playoffs.

If I remember correctly, the Chargers' head coach Kevin Gilbride was fired after this game and Jon Gruden was nailed for DWI shortly after this game. It apparently drove Gruden to drink.

3-0 game between the 2 teams. I think the Jets won. I don't remember. The play of that game had to be the Jets long snapper hiking the ball and hitting the holder's helmet on a field goal attempt that failed.

Go and look at the stats for that 1998 Chargers number one ranked defense. They only gave up three 300 total y/a games and zero 400 yard games. If any other defense had those numbers they will be talked about as a all time great defense. Even great defenses like the 1977 Falcons and the 1991 Eagles who didn't make the playoffs still get mentioned at least but the 1998 Chargers defense doesn't get mentioned at all.

The game that pops into my head was around 1999 because Gannon was QB and the Raiders scored about 18-21 points all in field goals. Anybody else remember that game? We looked real good until we got in the red-zone but we couldnt punch anything in for 7. I hope Chucky isnt that same guy anymore 20 years later.

Ryan Leaf's career started off well in 1998 at 2-0 with victories against the Buffalo Bills, who were playoff team that season, and Tennessee Oilers, who, a season later, were representing the AFC in the Super Bowl as the Tennessee Titans. Then, on a rainy day, it all just fell apart in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and things were never really the same for the '98 second overall pick. The first pick, Peyton Manning, got his first ever victory as a pro in Week 5 courtesy of Mr. Don't-Talk-To-Me-Alright.

I wonder how a punter feels after a game like this. You want to do your best and help your team, but if you're on the field THAT much, inherently your team isn't doing well. Poor Natrone Means. Other than one play, it seemed like he was the only offensive player in the game who was any good at his job.
