they don't need Azzi. Since when is she such key player? Massive hype aside, she's played about 4-5 games in her career that would warrant that kind hyperbole. She is NOT spectacularly productive offensive player, her biggest impact by far is the threat of three. Ironically, because of the hype, her rep as a 3 pt shooter is not consistent with reality. She's a career 38% 3pt shooter, far lower than Paige, and only a few % higher than starting guards in NCAA. Her mid range and rim game are absent most of the time, as is her distribution game....and she's still a liability on D and is in bottom third of country in rebounding. Qadence is already shooting 5% better and clearly doesn't struggle with confidence like Fudd. More time for Griffin, KK and Samuels playing their roles confidently makes them better without Fudd

Another UCONN problem is that they're primadonnas. They don't consistently play with toughness. NC State played with a huge amount of toughness and confidence. Hardwork beats talent when talent doesn't work hard. UCONN didn't work hard and NC state did. Imho

When she gets that deer in headlights look, I start to worry. Those shots she took are usually made by her. Then she defers to someone else when they’re not expecting the ball. 🙄 She needs a punching bag or boxing sparring session before each game! That’ll get her going!

Credit to the NCS Wolfpack Team who played an outstanding game. It’s a young team that needs to be in the Top 20. UConn looked completely lost with no movement on offense and played terrible defense. You were spot on about Azzi and the team was looking to Paige to do it all.

100%. We saw a stagnant offense that relied on desperation shots by Paige too often. Azzi and Caroline have been inconsistent over the last few seasons, but it's always been blamed on injuries. They don't have that excuse this season. They need to produce. Uconn got nothing from KK or Ice either, but at least got a nice surprise from Q's performance.

Azzi and Caroline have been hurt a lot. Not an excuse but significant. Azzi has inconsistent. She's been called the Reluctant Star, but she's gotta be consistent for all four quarters. Caroline needs to be more aggressive. he's too talented to be timid, but a history of concussions may have shattered her confidence driving towards the hoop and rebounding. When she's not hitting her shot, that's not great. I wish she would workon her midrange shot. Overwall, the biggest issues were rebounding and team defense. The new faces were lost on the defensive rotations. The vets gotta step up and be more vocal. Also, rebounding is a mindset. It's preparation. It's a desire. You gotta box out and go for it. Aliyah reverted back being unsure and timid. I hope this is a hiccup b/c she was awsome last season. Ice only played 7 min. She needs to be in more to get minutes.

I honestly think UConn needed this. I think they thrive at this moment when they are under the radar. Azzi missed a lot of open shots that we have seen her make before so I am not giving up on her yet. I think Geno needs to be using Aubrey more and if he is going to play Nika, she should be the main point rather than Paige. Paige and Azzi can spread the floor out better than Nika and Azzi. Qadence looked pretty good on offense and had some good boards so that was a bright spot. I think Geno's main priority should be focused on Ice right now. They need someone down low who can be good when Aaliyah is having a rough time. Great video!

If you have a full team of athletes but you’re only relying on 1-2 athletes to get you the wins…..that can be a problem because it stops the other athletes out there from showcasing their talents, and it makes it seems like the coaches only think those 1-2 players are the only good players on the team.

Has anybody mentioned the Huskies have suddenly switched full-time Point Guard? Last season every single Husky knew precisely where to throw the ball when they got possession. Nika Mühl. She got the ball, she ran the offense. Nobody, including the coaches, had a problem with this. Mühl's principal offensive contributions last season were her high energy, her high IQ, her court vision, her handles, and her remarkable ability to hit a moving target with the long ball. To this point in her career, she's not a shooting guard. Edwards was quoted last year as saying she felt "more organized" when Mühl was running the offense. Bueckers and Mühl are both terrific and dangerous points. When Bueckers is actually running point, Mühl doesn't really have a position to play. None of her skills are utilized. I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but last night the Huskies WERE starting a different point guard for the first time in almost two seasons.

Much validity to the analysis here. However, after Azzi opened the game with a three, she and Caroline shot something like 0-9 from distance, on utterly uncontested, practice-level shots. That’s not an over reliance on Paige. It’s suggested that Geno should have played with two bigs. Who do you have in mind, beyond Edwards? Jana? Dorka? I cut Ice some slack because she’s a freshman, but she was terrible, and UC has NO chance at going far unless Edwards gets some help down there (probably from Ice). First: The worry all along was inside for this team. No one has stepped up in the paint -- not Ice, not Amari, not Ayanna. If they are going to play small, then obviously those guards have to go all out on the boards, but even at that they are going to struggle against the top 10. Ice has been a serious disappointment to this point. Year after year it seems like UCONN cannot recruit good bigs. Second: I can only assume Aubrey is playing hurt -- there is no other reason for her not starting as she did last year. Especially when Aaliyah is the only thing big in their lineup. Aubrey at least has hops. Caroline is ok at SF when she has two bigs and two guards with her. When it's one PF and three guards around her? No. Third: This starting lineup stinks. Azzi does not look like a starter to me no matter how much she gets hyped, but if Nika is going to start, then you need a 3 pt shooter in that lineup so Azzi HAS to start. Sorry, but my overall impression of Azzi is: OVERRATED. She's a one-dimensional player and a a streaky one at that. And her defense is MEH at best. A former #1 HS player in the country should be showing more than she has shown us at any point since she got to UCONN. I already commented on Caroline. Personally, I would rather see more KK and less Nika; more Qadence and less Caroline. Doubt that will happen under Geno, though. If you play KK more then Paige is freed up to play the 2 aggressively -- although you could argue Paige is a better scorer when she controls the ball. Still...I want to see more KK until she proves otherwise. Qadence at least gives you some length on D. Fourth: Credit NC State for playing a terrific game. They obviously came ready to play -- UCONN did not.

Now that’s not to say that both girls are a problem however, constantly relying on 1-2 specific players to get you your wins every game instead of allowing everyone on the team to showcase their talents….that’s not a good thing. I mean look at LSU, now it’s obvious that Angel and Flau’jae are the key and most important players for that team but….Coach Mulkey understands that you can’t just have 1-2 key players taking over everything for every game hence why players like Samyah, Aneesah, Poa, Mikayla, Hailey, and Izzy are getting way more chances to showcase their talent. If you only like 1-2 specific players in the game being made to do the most….they could become tired, lazy, cocky, or lose their confidence under pressure.

Disagree on DeBerry. UCONN doesn't do a good job of recruiting bigs or taking the bigs they have and making them better. Quite a few have transferred out so there's something missing there when it comes to their inside players. Aaliyah is playing the 5 (she's really a phenomenal 4) when, in reality, they need a true center (6'5+)out there with her. Amari knows that they don't trust her, and when you are continually showered with wet cement, it will eventually harden, so she's catching heat from people wanting more from her than what's being poured in. UCONN habitually love on a faithful few. In all their practice videos, how many times have you seen Amari? You don't so why everyone keeps blaming her for where she is in her basketball evolution is puzzling. Blame the coaches they recruited her for her talent, but now it's no longer viable? Something is wrong, but I said last year that she needs to transfer, but it's a bit late. With her stats, no one is going to offer her, and I'm pretty sure that she's on a four year right now. If they're not going to rely on Amari, then Ice should have been ready to get busy, and she wasn't.

UConn simply got beat, why do people over analyze them? If you go throughout the game, you will see a lot of miscues and missed shots by NC State as well, so what do you make of that? They're always ranked in the top 5-10 every season, simply off reputation. NC State bullied them, because they're too soft. You have a post player who should average at least 25+ per game, but is frequently taken out of the flow of the offense because you have to appeal to perimeter shooting. Post players create more opportunities for those perimeter shooters. Blowing subpar teams out by 50pts has never been impressive, and this is what a lot of top ranked teams do early in the season. Then when they have to prove their ranking is legitimate, they end up losing and getting outplayed. My Michigan Wolverines may be middle of the pack, but at least they play hard every game out, no matter if it's a subpar team they play or a ranked team. #GO BLUE

That they haven't been able to coach her up enough to play even a few minutes to help Edwards out when they are getting killed off of the boards on both ends, is on the coaching staff. 3) Muhl and Griffin should never be on the floor at the same time. @RaxOldies I said the same thing about the bigs. No dig at CD but they should maybe bring Tina on to work with the bigs. She's no longer playing in the league if I'm not mistaken. Geno's coaching staff is aging out and the need coaches that are familiar to the new generation of players and that can get out there and make the bigs work. CD is a hall of fame but bring someone in that future recruits can connect with and that can push them from a perspective they understand. I just feel Amari has been shelved and no real depth of effort goes into her. Her personality is so humble but it needs to be hungry. Someone needs to pour into her but maybe too little too late. imho

This roster is filled with primadonnas and not Huskies. They played like poohdoo. It was agonizing to watch the lack of confidence that UCONN women's basketball is known for. I thought the number 2 ranking was very generous considering the lack of depth in the front court. I would reason it's because Paige is a game changer and playmaker, but she sure can't win games on her own. The give it to Paige and move out the way is a dated strategy. They are going to need to get things figured out quickly, or this season is going to be a not so nice one.

@@emmra2218 This I will agree with. I think the 2nd place rating was factoring in Jana El Afy who is now out for the season, she was the big [I believe she is 6'5"]. One big factor for the loss was the lack of movement by just about everyone but Paige and Qadence [needs to work on defense]. They all looked like they were wearing lead sneakers.

Face it UConn has a problem. Objectively they are severely underperforming. A roster stacked with international superstars and blue chip recruits getting humiliated by an unranked opponent. So much for the lazy trope that Paige Bueckers “makes everyone around her better”. Say bye bye to that number one ranking!

Paige Beuckers cannot carry Uconn like Caitlyn Clark can carry Iowa. For one, Caitlyn Clark has at least eleven [11] triple doubles, how many does Paige have? Maybe one! And yes it is because the bigs are not doing their job for Uconn. Prime example is that Edwards wasn't in the game until the second half. Caroline Ducharme, I don't even know what to say about her any more. Azzi looked so lost out there. The other big Amari DeBerry got what she wanted and that was a scholarship, she doesn't look like she wants to earn it. If they don't get their act together we will see more of this.

Because Paige doesn’t have to unless they’re under trouble, Paige had more assists in her career high than Caitlin. Nika and Paige are the new point guard duos so their assists will get blended. One bad game doesn’t mean ANYTHING. That was her first real game after 585 days of recovery. And she delivered!!! Paige has always been the hand that leads uconn to more. She dragged her team to the championship game her sophomore year while INJURED. don’t overlook her. Ps. Why can’t y’all go a day without mentioning Caitlin? Two different players with two different playing styles and two different teams with two different physicalities and two different (again) play style.

Well that Nika/Paige duo did really great didn't they..speak up I can't hear you! Edwards didn't play well in the first half, Azzi was a joke, Qadence was a bright spot.

@@usveteran9893 firstly I’m elaborating on a point you made. secondly, even with Paige’s absence, uconn had a better record than Iowa last season depite Iowa having their full roster with all of them healthy including CC. No one will deny that fact that Paige has an immediate shift to uconn ever since she stepped foot in storrs. Azzi or Aaliyah having a bad game means NOTHING. Azzi was the leading scorer for uconn before she herself was also injured. You haven’t really watched major uconn games if you continue saying Paige has no impact. During her career, Paige lost 3 times!! (2 before today). How many times has Caitlin lost? You’ll say that she carries the team on her back..do you think that’s a good thing? Iowa struggles without Caitlin on the court and that’s just disappointing. Uconn made it work without Paige. Players like Aaliyah and Azzi made it work despite both of them battling injuries. Every uconn player says that Paige adds this immediate dose of serotonin to the team. Even geno admitted that other players needed to step up during the Championship game and before that. Paige practically had all major OT points vs nc state. And she kept creeping closer and closer to SC during the championship game. Paige carries the team. If you deny that, stats and records say otherwise. Lastly, both Paige and nika are point guards, on the floor, one must play differently, I thought that was clear but ig not.. Ps. I never once compared both players, they play differently. they might be similar but also not.

@@violetforpb Fair enough, good analogy I guess my frustration over all is that I am worried that UCONN is not being all that it can be...Paige is! Maybe I am just shell-shocked at the outcome of that game. I am not trying to take away from Paige, she is a great player. Paige and Cailin do get compared a lot, I can understand that. For all intensive purposes if you place them both on the same team it may not work out the way you would expect it to. Paige plays consistently, but it is the inconsistency of the other player that decide the fate of the game outcome.

@@usveteran9893 trust me, it was a shock for all viewers, UConn fans or not. on one hand, It’s a good thing that their flaws have been out before any major championship. It was a tough loss but it’s nothing unexpected considering nc state’s new players/roaster. both girls have done unimaginable things for their programs, but despite everything many can point out flaws in both, not just that but also the way they contribute to the game either negatively or positively (with turnovers/forced steals). it’s unfair how we couldn’t see them match up one another except once. Paige and Caitlin are the best athletes of this generation. Both incredibly different but also the same with their achievements, assists record, showing up during hard times, and especially what they have done to their teams. We’re all disappointed with that loss but it’s a lesson learned and nothing is gonna get past the team unfixed. Guess Geno must go back to the drawing board..

Plus there are so many other solid players in the women's game. And also there is so much parody that it would be no surprise if uconn doesn't win it all. If anyone deserves publicity, it's Clark., she is amazing.
