The U.S. Is Racing to Multiply Its Missile Warning Satellites as China and Russia Threats Grow | WSJ

Military space capabilities are critical for U.S. troops in the Middle East and around the world, and that includes a constellation of satellites that can detect missile launches using infrared sensors. The recently-created Space Force is tasked with improving and proliferating the technology as Russia and China race to counter U.S. capabilities in space.
The U.S. has credited the missile warning system, known as SBIRS, for saving American lives at bases in the Middle East in the past, and experts say it’s likely proving to be a critical technology today, as Iran-backed forces launch a barrage of attacks against American service members and partners in the region.
WSJ’s Shelby Holliday sat down with Gen. B. Chance Saltzman, U.S. Space Force’s Chief of Space Operations, to learn more about how the satellite technology works.
Chapters:
0:00 The U.S.’s space tech advantage
0:37 Recent Middle East attacks
1:29 How SBIRS missile warning works
2:36 Protecting troops
3:45 Future of missile warning technology

I spent almost 20 years operating, developing, and testing DSP systems, and even that older system constantly surprised us with the things it could see. It managed to detect smaller missiles than we had expected, afterburning aircraft, explosions, and natural events like volcanoes and wildfires. The system could also see infrared celestial objects as it looked above the Earth horizon, and provided a catalogue of over 10,000 new infrared stars and other phenomena to the astronomers, but in that era we couldn't reveal the source because its existence was classified.

Amazing. Imagine what the newer systems can do today! As far as I understand, new stealth fighter tech has been somewhat diminished due to advanced new FLIR systems that can detect them just by AI trained IR signatures, even front facing from BVR. Technology is nuts.

So maybe those 3 troops that died recently in Jordan was at least a partial SBIRS failure. I had been hearing that part of the reason why the Administration was ignoring the many recent attacks was they had a warning with plenty of time to get under cover but this time they were confused because a 'friendly' drone was known to be in the area and no warning was given. Was SBIRS providing those warnings or did local radar fail? Both?

A drone and ballistic missile are two different things, unless the drone has a rocket engine the tech they’re talking about won’t see the drone that easily but thats why they use radar. As to why the base got struck without them shooting it down idk.

SBIRS uses infrared sensors to detect heat generated by missiles during launch and flight. Hypersonic missiles generate a lot of heat, which makes them easier to detect by infrared sensors.

Earth is only 8,000 miles thick, so "tens of thousands of miles" is hardly "above," more like "distantly across to." Clearly the illustration is waaay out of scale -- so all the mental models the Journal is building for us are false. Can the Journal's own mental models of reality perhaps be as inaccurate as their pictures and words in print?

To counter this system, simply overwhelm it with many fake missile launches that carry similar speed and heat signatures as real missiles do

To make those signatures you would basically have to make fake missiles equal in power to the real missiles. At which point it would cost the same to just make loads of real missiles to overwhelm the defences.
